Wistful Wednesday : 1957
Vacation Bible School! This was taken in June of 1957, I was almost six years old. I would be the chubby blonde on the right, my brother Carey is right next to me, he was three. The other children, I recall..but not their names. We left the farm in Minnesota for the summer and went to a little town by the name of Ray, North Dakota where my Dad was working on a road, he was a construction worker. We lived in town in the basement of this house for awhile, then we moved to a trailer court. Trailer trash! But indoor bathrooms!!! We only had an outhouse at the farm. The basement apartment was dark, the windows were small, it was probably a fire trap. I had terrible leg pain while living there, I used to cry at night..my legs hurt so bad. I was told not to jump..and it was better. I don't know what caused it, possibly I was growing really fast..and we didn't have vitamins back then. My Uncle Andrew lived with us, he worked with my Dad. He would take us out for ice cream cones in the evenings. I learned to play Jacks with my brother that summer..and we both went to Vacation Bible School. We also went someplace and got spring water every weekend, we collected it in jugs. It flowed out of the rocks, cold and clear. I remember being very impressed that it just flowed, and didn't need to be pumped:)

ReplyDeleteYou are darling and cute, in your starched little dress.
I remember those leg pains, middle of the night, sharp, strong! They eventually went away, but not until after I got "really" tall....do you think that might have something to do with it?

What fun to have all those pictures from your childhood!

Love the photos!!! I too had the "growing pains". They were horrible and I did grow. Always wanted to be short but that didn't happen!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat photos. Aren't you sort of a flower expert? If so, I need you to look at the banner of my blog and tell me what the flower is. I can't figure it out. Driving me nuts... (course I'm already halfway there)
ReplyDeleteI LOVE those old pictures.
ReplyDeleteDon't you just want to talk to yourself in the picture and tell her a few things???
You and your brother are so cute. I love your old pictures, nice story!

You can tell we are very close in age. I have a photo of me with my bible school class in a dress like yours and looking much like you except I didn't have a brother. Had the leg pain too and I did have an indoor bathroom.
ReplyDeleteNice to remember childhood and the old times. Thanks
Great pictures...Love your writing.
ReplyDeleteSister J and I had the same type of dress...but never earned, borrowed or stole a star or crown. Ours will probably still be coming; I'm sure we deserve both star and crown....g
What a walk down memory lane for the Duchess. Her Uncle used to take her to get water from a spring and then he would pick watercress and eat it. (Yuk!) Then her Grandpa, Pops, would take all the kids into town for ice cream. The Duchess always got a Dreamsicle. Great post!
