October 30, 2009 Something is in the air?
Good guessing, nope not a hot tub room, exercise room, potting shed, boudoir, studio or even a love shack. It is a Sauna! Our daughter and son in law no longer wanted it..so they moved it to our yard. It caused quite the excitement in the neighborhood. My brother Jody offered to do the dirt work and the septic system in exchange for some Saunas! It does not have running water.. we sauna the old way..carrying a bucket of cold water, and a bucket of hot water. It is an electric sauna, you have to turn it on about an hour before you want to go and sweat. You throw cold water on the rocks to create steam.. when you have had enough you soap up and throw water over your body..or run to the house totally naked and take a shower! Twenty minutes in the Sauna burns as many calories as an hour of exercising..who woulda thunk it.
Let's Go In!!
Cedar Benches..and a bucket of water. The brick on the rope is the counterweight that closes the door.
The electric sauna stove..the rocks heat up and when you throw water on them they create hot steam.
I do love taking a sauna, when I was little it was what we did every Saturday night for our bath. Sauna night was an occasion. My brother and I would go, our Mom and Dad would scrub up our hair and make sure we were rinsed off really well and dressed in our Jammie's and then we would trudge up the hill to Grandpas house. ( This Grandma ( my Fathers Mother) died when I was just three years old) While our parents were in the sauna, we helped our Grandpa set the table for coffee and we would play a game of checkers with him in the front room. We would never win those checker games either, but we had fun trying. When our parents came up to the house, we would have something that our Mother had baked..sometimes cookies, sometimes cake..sometimes fresh bread with butter.. and coffee in a saucer. I have been in many different saunas over the years, but that is the one that I think of when someone says "Sauna."
So Far Guy and I go to Sauna at least twice a week ..sometimes more. Chance waits patiently outside. Our sauna has two rooms, the dressing room and the sauna itself..it is pretty small..but it works great. We have steam wars..taking turns throwing water on the rocks. As with anything, you have to start out a little at a time. We need to look for an actual Sauna Thermometer..Far Guy has some wimpy thermometer in there.. I can't see anything in there anyway..it is way too warm to wear your glasses in the sauna. If someone wants to come to Sauna..bring your own cookies, and yes Far Guy and I will wear a towel to sauna when we have sauna company! :)
Happy Snowy Halloween From Chance! Is this a trick? Nope..we have snow:(
Shoot, I thought you had a chicken coop! A sauna, huh? I've never been in one but since you mentioned how it burns calories I may have to convert my chicken coop into one! ;D
Nice Sauna! I have such fond memories of Saturday night saunas at Grandma's house with cousins. There was red pump inside that we pumped to get water. We'd try to see who could stay on the highest bench the longest without getting down to cool off. Great memories.
Forgot two things... Don't like your snow but Chance looks really cute and would you translate what your sign says?
No reason ya'll couldn't use it as a love shack too! Heeeheehe!
Have a great Halloween and may your bags be full and your candy be chocolate!!!
That would feel good during a snow storm, let the wind and snow blow and just lounge in the steam. It is a good thing.
Merry Mary, Aunt Anna translated it all..but I have forgotten what she said. I will work on it..there are lots of signs in Finn in there..:)
I'm jealous..,.Completley! But I'm glad you have one:)
Never been in a sauna! It seems as if its the thing to do in the North is to have one outside, is it?? Ya'll are to funny! Me I think I stick to the hot tub in the back yard. No, I am just teasing, I am glad that you have one I am sure it brings so many memories of good times and will make some more for you now. Chance looks lonely he can't figure out why he can't join you!
Well what a surprise! It's beautiful and what fun! I've never been in one either but love the burning of calorie thing! Chance is the sweetest dog I know - what a cutie in these pictures. Happy Halloween.
A Sauna! How exciting! But poor Chance is left out in the cold :( Does he stay in the house when it's snowing? Burrrrr!
Darn- I am so disappointed. I was hoping you would confirm the love shack idea. Oh well, I guess sitting in there naked sort of qualifies.
Sounds like an excellent way to spend some time, especially the calorie burning. Now I want one.
oh, my duluth house had a cedar-lined sauna in the basement. it was the coolest thing about that little house, and it was a very cool house.
how wonderful that you have your own.
Never had a sauna--never had snow on Halloween-(that I remember)--I'm not looking forward to winter.
I think I'd like a Sauna. We've had snow on Halloween in the past. But tonight it was over 55 degrees.
Yay - I was right! And rolling around in the snow after the sauna (instead of a shower) is perfect!

My ancestry is Finnish, so I know saunas well.
Make SURE you tell everyone to pronounce it correctly..it is pronounced: SOW-NA, NOT Saw-na!!!
Great idea! But I thought you were supposed to go roll in the snow, afterwards???????
What fond memories you have of saunas! The only one I've ever been in was at the Y, lol. I love it! So pretty and warm!
