We have a small Apple Orchard about 20 miles from us. They are only open on weekends.
The apple of the weekend was Honeycrisp
We bought some and they are crisp and wonderful...just picked off the tree flavor.
They have some things for kids to do and tables and chairs sitting near the orchard. They were a friendly bunch. The farm originally belong to their grandfather and now two grandsons (brothers) own it.
It was a nice drive over and back...a good Sunday drive.
When the huge grocery store does not have apples...a small business does!
Far Side
A grocery store without apples? Wow! Can’t say I’ve ever been in one that completely ran out. You got fresher apples, supported a small local business and had fun doing so. It’s been years since I’ve been at an orchard. Good idea!
ReplyDeleteWe have some of the same issues with produce and with fresh fruits and meats. I stopped going to the big stores for those items last year. I visit the local butcher who take in local farm meat and get anything I wish. I also can stop by farm stores and pick up so many items too.
ReplyDeleteLOL.
Not toilet paper and some of the other things. We even have a food coop that is a bit pricey however their fresh veggies are always wonderful and it too is from local resources. And I could order on line and get a curbside pickup.
Big stores don't do business with little local places. That should change.
I do so love the neighborhood farms. Produce is so much fresher when purchased there. Very cute display out front.
ReplyDeleteNo apple at the grocery store must have been meant to be!
ReplyDeleteWe live near a family apple orchard. When our kids were little we would head over on a weekend in October, pick apples, admire the toy John Deere tractor collection in glass cages, purchase an apple fritter and glass of cider from the Basket Festival Queen and let each kid choose a pumpkin. If we picked the right weekend, there was an antique car show. Unfortunately this has progressed with the addition of mazes, a pit of corn kernels, food trucks, crafters and a balloon house. And adults and children each need to purchase a $14 wrist band to enter the premises and the right to purchase apples and pumpkins.
ReplyDeleteI like honeycrisp apples but Fuji are my favorite. :-)
ReplyDeleteHoney Crisp apples are one of our very favorites. It would be fun to visit an orchard this time of year. We used to get a lot of Haroldson (sp??) when my parents were alive as they had several trees. The Haroldson is a variety originating at the U of M.
ReplyDeleteThe apples look good! we don't have anything like that nearby so I'm stuck with supermarket apples.
ReplyDeleteThat is good to know! Looks like a nice place.
ReplyDeleteThat's one thing I'm missing about Spokane. We had apple, peach, pear and grape orchards less than 10 miles from where we lived and about 5 miles from where we lived in the trailer last year.
ReplyDeleteCostco had no toilet paper or water when I was there last week.
Blessings,
Betsy
Honey Crisps are delicious! I also love Jonathan’s, but they are nearly impossible to find anymore.
ReplyDeleteNothing better than stuff out of the dirt or right off the tree.
ReplyDeleteI have been buying the honeycrisp right now. We have apples as are snack as we watch tv at night. My diet restrictions are disgusting but an apple with some peanut butter is great too.
ReplyDeleteThose apples taste better than any that came via the grocery store, I'm sure.
ReplyDeleteAnd part of the enjoyment is driving out to get them ( or pick them if one is able to).
OH, Honeycriss are delicious! Those must be even better picked from the farm! :)
ReplyDeleteThat's one of my favorite activities in autumn... going to the apple orchard. Honey crisp apples are my husband's favorite and they're always ready for picking around his birthday every year... Sept 19. Enjoy! ~Andrea xoxoxo
ReplyDeleteNow that was a wonderful Sunday outing! A beautiful taste of Fall. You can be sure those apples were better than anything you could have gotten at the grocery store!
ReplyDeleteI do like apples but none in a grocery store is strange
ReplyDeleteLove the flavour of apples that have not been through cold storage. So fresh and yummy!
ReplyDeleteWe have an orchard not too far from us too. We were there last week, bought half a bushel of Honey Crisp and Cortland mix. And two quarts of apple cider. The flavor of fresh picked and pressed is just amazing. I used to work in an orchard in my 30s. Loved doing that work. It wasn't work, it was fun.
ReplyDeleteHoneycrisps are delicious. I worked at a real small apple orchard for 19 years...We had at one time 27 varieties of apples. A son and daughter-in-law have it now and things have changed a lot! One of my favorites and probably the other one is no longer there...I LOVE Jonalicious! And Blushing Golden.
ReplyDeleteOhhh, apples, sounds so good.
ReplyDeleteBuying them from the farm is a good way to go. Definitely "shopping local".
ReplyDeleteGood for you for going to an orchard! The smell of the apples there is always so good! And I love honey crisps! I remember going to orchards many times when I was a kid....there were always some farm animals around to pet and I can remember the smell of the wealthy apples and many other kinds in big baskets all around. Great memories.
ReplyDeleteOne wonderful event I will always remember occurred when we lived in Oregon. There was an apple tree in the yard of the house a neighbor owned. She said go ahead and pick one, they haven't been sprayed, and so I did and took a bite. The flavor was wonderful (I have no idea what kind of apple it was), and that warm juice filled my mouth and...
ReplyDeleteOur local apple growers have had a bad season... miss going out and picking!!
ReplyDeleteThose apples are definitely worth the 20 miles! They look beautiful!
ReplyDeleteHoneycrisp apples are ready here too- they are my favoutite.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a nice place to go, and a great way to get some apples.
