Wistful Wednesday : 1961

I found this old photo from 1961
I was ten years old.

That is most likely my birthday cake.  My baby brother would have been seven and my other baby brother almost one.

This photo was taken in the first remodeled kitchen at the farm.

My mother made my baby brothers shirt and that bib overhauls my other baby brother is wearing.
She sewed the curtains too they were a pale yellow with a brown design.

Note the days of the week flour sack embroidered towels hanging next to the old rotary dial wall phone...with a short cord...it was beige.

The plaster of paris fruit hung in the old kitchen too...and must have been a favorite of my Moms since it appears in the new kitchen.  The new kitchen had birch cupboards with stainless steel hardware...and a double sink.  The linoleum on the floor was a medium green color...it was a tiny hex pattern...I scrubbed it many times.

I just got some old towels that grandma had made many years ago, they are like treasures to me. Oh and I had cat eye glasses too!

Those are the glasses I wear now! Cats Eye glasses are the coolest. What a great memory for you.

Great photo. boy, if you hadn't said that was your kitchen I would have thought it was my old kitchen. I still use the old flour sack dish towel my grandmother embroidered. Also still use some of the doilies she crocheted.

I bet it's interesting to look at black and white photos while remembering the color in real life.

1961...The year Tom and I married. I remember doing lots of sewing like your mom must have done. My mother made our curtains. Did your mother do that?

Just saw that your mom did make the curtains. I need reading lessons.

It looks like you are wearing a necklace watch. Is that what it is? You look very sophisticated in those glasses. :-)

I like your hair, nice waves.

Photos capture more than memories. My childhood home had many of the same items.

I love that picture! It sure takes me back to the 60's and could have been our kitchen. I remember that style of towel rack, the wall phone, the kitchen step stool your baby brother is on and even the plaster fruit! I used to make coveralls for my boys too. It's alway good to see pictures of the old days.

I had pale blue cat glasses and a gold necklace watch. Plaids and checks were big--even for pants back then. Culottes were big in the summers with sleeveless blouses. Funny how you can remember the colors even in a black and white photo. Me, too! :)

I like the narrated tour in color! I’m trying to think if i can remember age 10 in our kitchen now.

I was born in 1960 and sat on a step stool just like your brother. That kitchen brings back many memories for me.

I love photos that show a lot of the room/background. Brings back fond memories of what was popular. Fun photo of you three siblings.

We really do remember our kitchens from the old days. As kids we spent so much time there. I have a plaster fruit wall hanging very much like that that I collected at a yard sale. Old stuff like that is fun to have.

My Mom must have liked those plaster of paris fruits too because we had a number of them hanging in our kitchen in the late 50's. Also had the wall phone but it was plain black. Thanks for the memories.

We must have grew up somewhat similar...my mom made almost all my clothes...I can remember her taking newspaper and cutting, and would measure it against me...till she had cut out a pattern for pants.

I bet in her entire life, mom never had 5 sets of curtains that were bought, by anyone. She would buy pretty flat sheets and make curtains...or find a good deal on fabric. We also had some plaster of paris fruit, but it was individual pieces...but for the life of me I can't remember what all...I think a peach and an apple, but there was a third.

Interesting how many things can be sen in a photo that dates things. I notice the nice chrome table. I bet they too that to the new house too!

Wow, what memories huh? I remember a step stool too because I put on an apron and had to do dishes, and couldn't reach the sink! It was always my job! I remember the dial phones and the party lines out there too. It seemed to be the same people ,that took up all the time on the phone, and you'd have to check five times before you could call anyone! Ha.. Ha! Living in the country was the best though. The cousins would all come to the farm almost every Sunday. It was great.

So cute you were and your baby brothers too! Your Mom was very talented...I did a lot of that too...made the kids clothes and sewed bedspreads and curtains. That picture just screams vintage! The phone, I remember those tables, the step stool chair your littlest baby brother is in and I think I've mentioned we had the same glasses! LOL! What a walk down memory lane!
