While waiting for my turn at the Dentist the other day I went by the Lions Park, a homeless guy had taken up residence and there were only a few Daylilies blooming. My guess is that the Garden Clubs best workers have become too old to maintain the gardens like in years past.
So I went over to the lake.
Spirit Lake in Menahga Minnesota.
I filled the car with gas, and stopped by a gift shop and the bakery...small towns need support too.

Too bad there's a homeless guy living at the park. Sad for him and it drives people away from the park, too. Got you a trip to Menahga, though. ;)
Homelessness is a huge problem. People who live in poverty don't have a lot of resources as to where to live. Rent is so high that it often exceeds the wages one makes in jobs that pay minimum wage. Those who struggle with mental illness and addictions seem to be ever increasing. I wish there were better solutions for them.
What a beautiful spot. Right now we have a very active Master Gardener program with lots of volunteers and a beautiful, well-tended downtown in our small town. Lots of gardens and planters and garden beds on the corners. But the volunteers are all older than me. I hope the organization can continue to provide these services in the years to come.

We stopped on our way to my hometown at a local bakery. The donuts were delicious!
If I was homeless I would start walking quickly to the South before Winter, unless I could build a small cabin with a wood burning stove and have a garden to harvest and can from. Some of the homeless have mental issues so it's not always easy for them to see solutions to their problems. When I was little there was no homelessness in my little town...in those days everyone took care of their neighbors regardless.

So many homeless in the richest nation in the world. I know each story is a sad one. I have no answers to this problem. Giving them money does not fix anything.
I have such mixed emotions about unhoused campers. We have many here.
Small town gift shops and bakeries are wonderful.

I love bakeries but can't eat any of it anymore. I buy my wife cookies and donuts when I think of it. We have a Spirit Lake in Iowa.

Very pretty. It makes me miss the days of fishing with my Dad.
Dawn, I bought flat bread and treats at the bakery. I wanted to buy a pair of mittens at the gift shop but they were sold out.
Small towns sure do need support. So glad you're helping to support them.
Is Spirit Lake near Spirit Lake, Iowa? I've never been there but lots of my school friends vacationed there every year. Are you looking for fancy pantsy mittens or ones like the ones I make for the school kids? If it's the plainer ones for working outside I would be glad to make you a pair. Just let me know. :-)

Wow, just one homeless guy? Your town must be doing something right. In my rural county, at the last count, we had 850 homeless. They do a census every year. They are starting to build tiny houses but not all of them, qualify. They have to be drug-free and no alcohol and have no criminal past. That is pretty much the majority. It's sad.
Very pretty lake. We have so many homeless that just seem to drift from place to place. It's becoming difficult for everybody, especially them. :-(

I had a garden by the mailbox that I did in conjunction with one of the other neighbors.
My new neighbor tidied it up the other day and now I'd like to plant some bulbs next year!
