Today is St Urhos's day, the colors of the day are purple and green. As the legend goes the grasshoppers were eating all the grapes so St Urho chased them out of Finland.
The little town of Menahga Minnesota had a parade last Saturday.
The parade lasted about two minutes.
Men in underwear...the highlight of the parade.
There were not many parade participants or parade watchers even though it was a beautiful day.
Far Side
Gotta love the men in purple underwear. Give them credit for doing it.
ReplyDeleteFun legend! I am surprised numbers were down for a parade when it is one of the few safer forms of entertainment these days. I love Purple!
ReplyDeleteThe St. Patrick's Day parade in our town, which happens every year, was cancelled again this year... second year in a row... because of the virus. Happy St. Urho's Day!! ~Andrea xoxo
ReplyDeleteI will always think of you on St. Urho's Day! What fun! :-)
ReplyDeleteIt looks like fun even if it was only a few minutes.
ReplyDeleteMen in purple underwear makes it a pretty special parade even if small.
ReplyDeleteA small but fun event. Makes me think about the "homecoming" parades our kids grew up with. We lived then in a town of about 200 people and the homecoming parade would be each elementary grade group dressed up in the theme of the year, a couple of floats built by HS kids, plus the HS band, a small group of Legion members carrying the flag, and usually ended with the volunteer fire department throwing candy from a firetruck. Maybe 5 minutes while they marched up the 2 blocks of Main St, but what fun.
ReplyDeleteMaybe St. Uhro can chase the bugs out of our countries, starting with the politicians.
ReplyDeleteHappy St. Urho's Day! Love the guys in underwear...too funny!
ReplyDeleteCommunity traditions and celebration are fun!
ReplyDeleteLooks like we all would have had a good smile , had we gone.
ReplyDeleteBy next year the streets should be full! :)
ReplyDeleteThings must be improving with the pandemic if the St Urho’s Day is back in town!
ReplyDeleteI love seeing your pictures of this each year! Small town parades are very special and I believe an important part of life in our country.
ReplyDeleteWhat fun!! I love small town parades. Our small town has a huge 4th of July parade and people come from all over the area. It was cancelled last year and I don't think I would feel comfortable going this year, even with the vaccine.
ReplyDeleteWe also have a "Pet N Pup Parade" that dates from the 50's. Children dress up along with pets ranging from rabbits and puppies and kittens, to ponies and even fish or reptiles pulled in containers in wagons. That parade is not as well attended so we might venture out for that one, if it is held.
Men in purple. I can get into that.
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy your sharing of St Urho's Day. Have a grape for me. :-)
ReplyDeleteI think this parade has the right spirit. It is hilarious. Lots if Finnish people here but I've never heard of St. Urho
ReplyDeleteIf only the men looked better in their underwear
ReplyDeleteNow that looks like fun. It takes a secure man to dress in purple underwear and walk up the street! :-)
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Betsy
Always like to see your post of the St. Urho parade.
ReplyDeleteBut you and far guy were there watching the parade....so I'm sure Saint Urho is giving you brownie points for that! Glad it was a nice day for a parade too!
ReplyDeleteI hope the annual parade doesn't fall by the wayside. Glad you were able to attend.
