Thanksgiving 2010

Cons headers-p0042

We are spending a quiet day at home, cooking a turkey and thinking about how we can use all the leftovers..Turkey Hotdish, Turkey and Biscuits and Gravy and Turkey Salad Sandwiches are some of our favorites.  We will make two different kinds of stuffing/dressing..one with sautéed  giblets for Far Guy and one with apples and raisins for me. I like the dark meat, Far Guy likes the white meat.

How many of you remember this Thanksgiving song by Lydia Marie Child?  Far Guy and I tried to sing it the other day, neither of us could remember all the words. We both learned it in grade school. I wonder if the music teachers use this song anymore?  It was written in 1844 as a poem.

Over the river, and through the wood,
To Grandfather's house we go;
The horse knows the way to carry the sleigh
through the white and drifted snow.
Over the river, and through the wood—
Oh, how the wind does blow!
It stings the toes and bites the nose
As over the ground we go.
Over the river, and through the wood,
To have a first-rate play.
Hear the bells ring, "Ting-a-ling-ding",
Hurrah for Thanksgiving Day!
Over the river, and through the wood
Trot fast, my dapple-gray!
Spring over the ground like a hunting-hound,
For this is Thanksgiving Day.
Over the river, and through the wood—
And straight through the barnyard gate,
We seem to go extremely slow,
It is so hard to wait!
Over the river, and through the wood—
Now Grandmother's cap I spy!
Hurrah for the fun! Is the pudding done?
Hurrah for the pumpkin pie!..Lydia Marie Child

It is a balmy –8 F  this morning.  Happy Thanksgiving! :)

Oh, yes, I remember the song very well.

When you were telling that one likes dark meat and one likes white, I remembered a nursery rhyme.

Jack Sprat could eat no fat,
His wife could eat no lean,
but between the two of them,
they licked the platter clean!

Remember that one??
Happy Thanksgiving, my friends, enjoy.

I remember it too. We used to sing it as children, and I think we stopped after the first stanza. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours, Connie! Stay warm and toasty and show me pictures of that spread, okay?

Beautiful header collage Connie. Brrr....it's so cold where you are. I remember learning that song in 3rd grade but I did not remember all the words either. Wishing you a warm and cozy day with each other. Love, Mildred & John

That poem talks about snow - and a hundreds years later, not much seems to have changed.

Enjoy your day and remember - the best thing to put in a pumpkin pie - is your teeth! ;-)

They're still singing it. I just watched a video on a blog of their young daughter singing this song with all the children for their Thanksgiving program--plus others. But I only remember singing the first two stanzas and the last one (and couldn't reember the words now). And the program I just watched--could barely tell what the kids were singing as they were all singing separately, shall we say--ROFL!! Was so cute!

Was that cold when I woke up here in Fargo, too. Happy Thanksgiving!!

LOVE that song and since we usually had to travel to get to our grandparents' homes, we would sing it for miles! There were four of us kids traveling with both parents.
Your weather- - - - brrrrr! Here in SE TN, it has been low seventies for part of the day. My husband has continued painting the house and I am cleaning the basement - - - still . . . .

Our Thanksgiving celebration has been postponed until Saturday due to the birth of the first grandchild by my son-in-law's sister . . . so we had the traditional Tacos today! haha - - - but they were super delicious.

Well I would have to say that this is one of those situations where opposites attract is very beneficial:)

We sang that song but we said Grandmother. My brother and I sang together quite a bit. I had forgotten that. Hope you and Far Guy enjoyed your Thanksgiving together. Hubby and I fried chicken and made small amounts of mashed potatoes and sweet potato and green bean casserole. We have leftovers for today and that will be all of it. We may have a couple pieces of chicken left and I will put in the freezer for the next pot of soup.

We have given up the whole turkey thing for the two of us. Left overs are a challenge.
This is a poem I've never seen.
Hope you have a great Thanksgiving weekend.

Ewww, that's cold. I was thinking you weren't too different to us, but then remembered we're Celcius and you are Fahrenheit. Happy Belated Thanksgiving!

That is too cold for living human beings. Stay inside until the food runs out.

Oh! YES! I love that song and sing it always to my grandchildren. When my kids were little we would travel 4 hours to be with my parents so the song was often sung.

I got that horrid bug (chest cold yada yada) and felt not too keen the week of TG. Our youngest grand was sick, too. This is the first time in years that I didn't bake
