Gone

Gone From My Sight

I am standing upon the seashore. A ship, at my side,
spreads her white sails to the moving breeze and starts
for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength.
I stand and watch her until, at length, she hangs like a speck
of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.

Then, someone at my side says, "There, she is gone."

Gone where?

Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast,
hull and spar as she was when she left my side.
And, she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port.

Her diminished size is in me -- not in her.

And, just at the moment when someone says, "There, she is gone,"
there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices
ready to take up the glad shout, "Here she comes!"

And that is dying...

Your poem’s imagery is comforting. I know you all are thankful for such a long time with your mom and grandma. That has been quite a gift for the world. It is so different in our family this month. A great-granddaughter left unexpectedly on her voyage ten days ago and for her parents and siblings it is still very difficult to comprehend, Blessings to your family.

Even when expected, we are still not ready for the eventual final goodbye to our parents. It hurts. May you be comforted in knowing your mother is now united with her heavenly Father and those gone before her who were waiting with open arms. RHill, TX

Thank you for letting us know. The poem is great - - - I have never read it before.
Her husband died in the winter, too? Seems like I remember that you had a gathering/memorial for him when the weather was warmer but I could be remembering incorrectly.
Prayers and energy for you all as you have to do the necessary things in the days ahead.

Such a beautiful poem that represents the passing of a loved one so beautifully. I'm so sorry for you and your family in the reality of the loss of your Mom, but there is great rejoicing in Heaven as she arrives to spend eternity with your Dad and those who have gone before. I'll keep praying for you all as you cope with the reality of her being gone.
Blessings and love,
Betsy

When sorrow turns to peace,
it doesn't mean that we forget.
It means the one we're missing
is dwelling with us yet.

We may not ever see them,
but the sense they're there is real.
I believe it gives the comfort
that we need to help us heal.

What you have written in your mother's absence is respectful, beautiful, touching, and full of love. My deepest sympathies for the passing of your grandmother, Far Side's mother, and for all those who are missing her.

What a wonderful image your poem provides me. Thank you. I'm very sorry you mom had to move on ahead, but it's obvious to me from your posts that all of you know she is not alone. Nor are all of you. Hugs.
