Sweetness of Winter

Have you ever tried Cara Cara Navel Oranges?

They are my favorite orange.  Our local store has them in the late fall from South Africa and now in winter they are from California.  They are more expensive than regular navel oranges….but then when buying fresh fruits I never let the price sway me one way or the other.

I complain to who ever is in the produce department if they are not in their usual spot.  Way up here in the frozen North we need every bit of sunshine goodness we can get.

More cara cara oranges

They are juicy and seedless, yes the flesh is a beautiful rose color. An accident of nature a cross between two different orange trees…a delightful accident.

Cara Cara oranges

Just my opinion…they are a tad bit tart but still sweet enough…perhaps with berry like notes if you are an orange connoisseur. I slice them into small wedges and throw them in a bowl for breakfast.

Oh yes that is an orange cutting board…just for oranges and other fruits.

It looks a bit like a grapefruit does inside! I will have to check and see if I can get one here and try it.

I have had them before. We don't always have them available, but I love them, too! :-)

Love the "orange" colored board, just determined by color or is it something special? Thank you for the Vitamin C story - I don't eat much fruit (it looks delicious).

Hmm, these are new to me as well. I don't eat many oranges; perhaps, I'll give them a try.

I bought it special for slicing fruit. I also have a white board marked with a sharpie “chicken”

I've had Blood oranges and I wondered if these were just another name for them. Googled them and found that the Cara Cara is the result of a mutation of the navel orange that happened in Venezuela. The blood orange is not the same. I learn something every day.

I will look for these oranges, they sure look pretty. I buy fresh fruit several times a week and treat myself to any fruit I want.

I am not aware of Cara Cara oranges. I don't think I have ever seen them in the supermarket where I shop.

Well, I'm in California, and I never heard of Cara Cara oranges. I'll have to go look for some. Could they be like what is called blood oranges? They do look like ruby grapefruit!

Yum! They look great. I believe I've had them and I get those little tiny one called Cuties. These are hard to find but worth it if you do!

I've never heard of them nor had them but they look delicious! I've had the blood oranges that are darker in flesh than that ans they are also very good. We don't get a lot of variety around here but it looks like you do well in your neck of the woods...enjoy!
