Nerve Center

I have always hated phone books especially after they got rid of the small local area ones and replaced them with huge five inch things that weigh five pounds.   I just want a few local numbers.  I just call the same people all the time anyway..and no I do not have them programed into the phone.  I have them up on the “Nerve Center” ..stuff is stored there until it is thrown away, paid or otherwise dealt with.  The only thing that stays is the note card list of phone numbers, cell phone numbers and the list of when the magazine subscriptions were paid for.  The sleazy magazine people will try and get you to renew your subscription a year in advance if you let them..I have one that says they have me on automatic renewal..well I said “Listen Buster..I have news for you..I write the checks and you are not getting one with that kind of automatic attitude.”

The Nerve Center was getting too small..actually it has been too small for a long time.  Off we went looking for a larger cork board to make my life more organized.  Well good luck with that one..I found only a couple of sizes..the one I had and another one that was the size of a billboard.  I decide that I could live with the one I had..it might just need new cork. So we bought a package of cork squares.

On the way home as we pulled into the garage I noticed an old bulletin board that I had used for the greenhouse..it might just be the perfect size. It barely fit between the phone and the landing.  I could use what cork I had and run to town and get more if I needed it.

Bulliten board project two

I was impatient..it was cold outside..below zero..yuck.

Bulletin Board three

We had to move that clock..one of the hazards of having wood walls is footprints on the walls when you move something..it will fade in time.   I glued and double stick taped the new cork tiles in place.  I found some scrapbook loony paper to fill in for cork at the bottom.  I used lots of push pins to help hold everything in place.  Fancy Smancy new wooden ones, and I even found my little bug pushpins from the greenhouse!    Ta da..

Use what you have and make it better instead of buying new.

This will work for now..I have visions of a cabinet with two doors with loons on the front..when you open the doors..you are in the nerve center..shh..no one tell Far Guy but I may put it on list for him to build next summer.

I am still working on my list for another 12 days.   The cubbies under the step have been completed..and the dining room is all done..except for the glass thingy's on the light fixture..the days are dark and dreary and I don’t want to wash them when they are hot.

Onward and forward into the kitchen..it is way below zero here..very cold.  Good time for me to stay holed up in the kitchen:)

Great accomplishments...I can't seem to get anything done.

Love the nerve center.

The nerve center looks grand. Better to recycle or make one new thing from two old things, than buy new and throw the old away. Good luck with the Far Guy getting the doors on the nerve center. I understand how you feel, enclosed would look neater, and the messages and notes wouldn't be visible for the world to see. STAY WARM!!

Ya' did good girl. Stay warm and enjoy a nice day inside. We're expecting 50's in Arkansas...so off to work I go. No one lets me read blogs at work.

Nothing better to do on these days - stay warm and cross things off that list ;)

I am thinking of digging my car out from the snow and heading to the Senior Center today for a nice walk around town with the gang. We won't drive far because the roads are pretty awful, but a walk will feel good, I'm thinking. It's just getting there that doesn't seem very appealing. It's 17 degrees with a brisk north wind. Brrr. But you are much colder.

Great idea! Your nerve center looks "store bought". The cabinet idea is a good one. Very cold here and windy here today. Wish I had the ambition to cross some things off my to-do- list.

I love projects like this. Looks good. Your cabinet idea is a good one that I bet FarGuy could do a great job on. ;) Stay warm. It's 15 below over here at 8:30 in the morning. Warming up a little. ;)

Your center solution is perfect, and I do like the door idea. Keep warm doing your kitchen stuff.

I like your nerve center. It's better than what I have... which is a pile on the kitchen counter that we have to weed out occasionally... when it starts falling on the floor or is in danger of spontaneous combustion as it creeps toward the stove.
I can just see your cabinet now. Will you also have a place to hang keys in there? I am in love with loons, too! We don't have them here, but I remember that wonderful eerie call from summers at camp.
Stay warm. Brrrrrrrr! We're supposed to get near 60 today - crazy weather!!

My nerve center is like 'Dreamings':( And I'm finding it hard to accomplish much of anything these days. I really need to make a list.

I have the same sort of nerve center. Mine has a piece of painted tin too.....I use magnets on it to attach my "phone list" a sheet of cardstock has the cell numbers and above that is just a paper one (easier to pick up) of others we need to keep handy. I keep the list saved on my computer so that when a certain man scribbles new numbers on the lists they can be replaced or changed.

I like reading about things that make me go, 'what a great idea' or 'why didn't I think of something like that?'
I just can't seem to think outside the box so thanks for sharing this, Far Side! :)

Very nice low tech nerve center . You had great fun doing this. Now what would really look good would be one those old telephones from the 1950's and before. Hide the "fancy Schmancy " phone.

You have been busy and organized! Just reading about it makes me feel tired...

Wow! What an upgrade! Very nice and I love the name..."nerve center"! I know exactly what you mean about magazine subscriptions too! They're terrible! I had one that wasn't expiring for 2 years and they were pestering me to renew! Yes, and that automatic renewal...I don't think so! I've cut down a lot on my magazines. Especially the decorating ones as I can just log onto blogs like this and get wonderful, thrifty ideas like yours! Thank you!

Well that was very creative. I have a nerve center too. The older I get the more I need to tack stuff on it to keep track of things. My old mind is losing it sticky grip. Things that used to stay put up there now get written on scraps of paper and tacked onto the "nerve center."

Funny, The old one is hanging above my computer right now. And, like yours, it needs a face lift. You are all tidy and organized. I need to do that too. Someday....

Good deal - - at the rate you are going, you will feel like parts of it are a new house by the time winter is over - - and you will have time to enjoy the summer -- unless you are working all day at the museum again.

In total agreement with using somethingnyounhave and can modify vs. buying something new, Connie. We stopped getting all magazines and find we don't miss them, although we still get annoying notices.
