30

How can it be???  Our oldest Grand is 30 years old today.  Hardly seems possible.

Savannah and me in 1996 the day she came home from the hospital.

Savannah and Far Guy in 1998

A couple of photos with Chance.  He loved Savannah she was a great water/ball thrower!

Savannah was throwing water in the air for Chance...this is most likely Namaken Lake or Lake Kabetogama in Voyageurs National Park in way Northern  Minnesota in 2008.

One of my favorite photos of Savannah on her birthday when she was 20 years old!

Happy Birthday Savannah...Grandpa and I love you now and forever!

21

How can baby Adam our youngest Grandson be 21??  When did he grow up?  I want him to be little again...the little boy who liked going to movies with me and eating a gallon of popcorn.

2004  he was three!

2007 he was six years old.

This may have been the school year that he told the teacher she was boring.   He told it the way it was and was /is always a joy to listen to.

Happy Birthday Adam!

Backwards Birthdays

Our youngest daughter Jen is celebrating backwards birthdays.  I believe she says she is 34 this year...she began going backwards at 40.

This was her birthday in 1993.   She was 18 that year.  No one ever wants to go backwards when they are 18!  Photo taken at the  house at the Resort on Straight Lake.

She was 18 her whole Senior year...September birthday...

Usually on her birthday...I would cook a favorite meal and invite her Grandparents over for supper and cake.   Sometimes she would ask one friend to come over.  Then on the weekend after a birthday she would have some kind of party with lots of kids invited.... Happy Joes...and all girl sleepover...a party in the yard playing games....   something to make her feel special!

Happy Birthday Jen...she will visit us sometime today.  Hope you feel special spending your birthday with your elderly parents!

Love you!

48

48 years ago I was nine months and 18 days pregnant.  She was born on her Great Grandmother Meade's 79th birthday just as Grandma had predicted 7 months earlier.  We welcomed our oldest daughter shortly after noon.   We had a little bit of snow on the ground in places that year...the spring melt had begun.

We were both convinced we were having a boy and his name would be Travis.

BUT  He was a she and she was perfect.

Trica about three weeks old the dress was very pale blue.  She was baptized in that dress. The dress had lace and tiny pink rosebuds on the bodice and on the ruffly panties.  The blue booties were a gift from Far Guys Grandma Meade...she crocheted four pair...blue and yellow booties and pink and white Mary Janes.

Her first birthday was celebrated in Colorado where Far Guy was stationed.

She got a new rocking chair just her size.  She wasn't feeling real well the day of her birthday...I think she was getting some new teeth.

She had a beautiful cake. But she was afraid of it!  The cake plate was a wedding gift and we still call it the fancy birthday cake plate.

She cried real tears.

Hardly seems right that we are parents of a child that is 48...but I guess the years keep flowing one to another and another.

Happy Birthday Trica!  Love you lots!

Older

I am older today.

I was looking through some of my old birthday photos and this one made Far Guy laugh out loud.

11 years old 1962

Me and my baby brother…ready to shoot the photographer.  Far Guy said “Too bad you didn’t keep that holster!”

Doncha just love the full skirt with itchy can cans underneath accessorized by a apron with it’s own towel…and a really strange haircut…no chance of those bangs getting in my eyes…and my shoe is untied.  I am holding a figurine of a Collie.

My Mom took this photo and she marked it 11 years old so the year would be 1962.

Far Guy and I will go to lunch today with my parents…at one of our favorite places.  I got new mulching blades for my lawnmower so I am really happy…and Far Guy got me a nice surprize too…quite by accident…but I really like it!  When he asked me what I would like for my birthday I replied  “ I know you will pick out a really thoughtful gift.”

Wistful Wednesday: Birthdays

This is birthday week at our oldest daughter’s house.

She is 46 today.  Hardly seems possible that we have a child approaching 50 years old.

Trica 14 or 15 years old

This was Trica when she was about 14 years old, it was the year of the orange hair.

It was Paige’s birthday last week …she was 19 that hardly seems possible either.

I decided to see if I could find a photo of  Miss Paige when she was 14.

Paige is 14 (2)

I found one!  Happy Birthday Miss Paige!!  I have no recent photos of her…maybe soon.  We talk to her on the phone but have not seen her since November.

It was Maddies’s birthday yesterday.  She turned 20.

Maddie 2012 14 years old

I found a photo of her when she was 14 also. Most of the photos I take of her have Mikey in them now…I will take a photo of her soon.

Happy Birthday girls!

Wistful Wednesday: 1958 My 7th Birthday

In September of 1958 I was 7 years old.

7th birthday 1958

In 1958 I was in first grade, and my baby brother was four years old, my other baby brother was not even a twinkle in my Dad’s eye yet nor was my sister. My Dad would have been 32 years old that Fall.

My Mother took this photo and baked the birthday cake.  We are standing on the south side of the house in front of the Honeysuckle bush/tree.  This was the old house before it was remodeled.  That is my bedroom window, my room was just off the living room, it was small with just room enough for a single bed and a dresser… My brother was probably still sleeping in his crib.

Back in 1951 I was born at 1:20 AM and weighed 7 pounds and 11 ounces and was 21 1/2 inches long.  My Dad was in Korea when I was born. I would go home with my mother to my Maternal Grandparents home.

Yes I am older today.  You can do the math.

Later today Far Guy will take me out for a late lunch/early supper where I will have a half strength frozen original margarita to celebrate.  (Full strength makes me sleepy and looking for a place to nap it off.)

Happy Birthday to me!

3 to 16

Back in 2004 Adam was three years old.  We all met up at Itasca State Park and had cake…Bob the Builder was his favorite back then.  Adam is our youngest Grandchild. For a long time we called him “Baby Adam.”

2004 Grandpa and Adam

Yesterday we drove up North to say Happy Birthday in person!  We all went out for supper at a place called Texas Roadhouse.

Adam 16 years old

Grandpa and Adam 2017.

The food was good and the company was even better.

Adam takes his drivers test next week.  He said the driving instructor had him parallel park about 12 times so  “I should be good Grandma!”

Happy Birthday Adam…these years roll around faster and faster soon you will be all grown up! ( It is hard for this Grandma to see baby Adam almost all growed up.)

Adam going on 16

This is the photo that I put on his birthday card, with a little money, some to save and some to spend…all I got out was “some to”…and he finished that last part for me…after 16 years he knows his Grandparents quite well.

Wistful Wednesday: Far Guy’s Birthday

Today is the day, 67 years ago Far Guy was born.  He was a “blue baby” now we know what that means.  It was the first sign  that he had Alpha One Antitrypsin Deficiency. Back then they didn’t know about such things and just called him a “blue baby.”

J G 1953 (2)

Far Guy and his sister in 1953

Don’t let the sweet smile fool you…he was a handful.  Typical boy into everything and had to try everything at least once or twice.  He often wishes that he had the Lionel train cars that were sacrificed for small explosions(Firecrackers) and those that were set on fire in the basement.

His Mom used to make him a birthday dinner, he always asked for shrimp, there was a french fryer in the basement  especially for french fries or shrimp. She would make him some kind of orange sherbet dessert…it was spread in a pan and put in the freezer until it was served…brownies with hard (boiled chocolate) frosting was another of her birthday specialties.

I asked him to do a photo shoot with Chance.

Another Year Older

Yes it happens to the best of us.  We age if we want to or not.
I used to be younger.
1966 I was 5 years old
This was in 1956 when I was 5 years old.
1966 Birthday party
Some of my friends.  Janet, Rhonda, my baby brother Carey, me, Corrine, Pam and Roxanne.
I kinda remember this birthday when I was five.  The party was at the neighbors.  I saw Janet this summer…the others I have not seen in awhile.
We don’t have much planned to mark the day, supper will be a steak and a baked potato before Far Guy heads off to a reunion with his classmates. ( When the date was mentioned as a possibility for this mini reunion I said “Go ahead, if they want to meet that night you should go.”) I will have a quiet evening at home with Chance.
My Medicare Card came three months early…so I am all set!

Wistful Wednesday: Cake Week

There are three of us with September birthdays. Years ago there were just two of us…then along came Adam to join us.  His birthday is at the beginning of the month and I have not blogged about him because I wanted a new photo!

This is what we used to call “Cake Week” and it seems to be coming up faster every year.

Here is a cake and a child almost 33 years ago.  It is not her birthday quite yet a few more days…not mine yet either.

Jennifer and Connie 1982

Jennifer and I in 1982 when she was 7 and I was 31…goodness was I ever that young?  It looks like a cake with clowns and balloons and seven candles.  Isn’t Jen cute?  Her haircut  suits her…we were lucky enough to find one fellow in all of Moorhead Minnesota who could give her a decent haircut and he cut her hair for years.  I cannot remember his name but I can see him plain as day…silvery hair and quite handsome and he owned his own hair salon. (Dwayne’s House of Beauty maybe?)

Jennifer would have been in First Grade at George Washington School, I should remember her teachers name…but it has escaped me….no face to go with a name either. ( All that info is in Jennifer’s School Days Scrapbook at  her house.  See if you make a scrapbook it is okay to forget a few things. )  I cheated and looked it up in her baby book…I still have that.

Mrs. Fridgen was her teacher and I wrote:  Jenny is very interested in Math.**  She can tell time, count money, write numbers to 200.  She can read quite well but doesn’t like to read.  She can spell some words~ she spells them like they sound.  Mrs. Fridgen said “Jenny really enjoys life.”   Jenny likes school but it is hard for her to get up in the morning.  Jenny took an after school dramatics class and enjoys art, coloring and drawing.Jennifer and her Grandmothers 1982

Jennifer and her Grandmothers.  My Mom(age 53) on the left and Far Guy’s Mom ( age 68) on the right.  Jen must have wanted to see the photo and her Grandfather H.  obliged…he loved that Polaroid Camera. (Those bigger than a boat spectacles must have been in fashion!)

The photo was taken at Far Guy’s Parents home in Park Rapids.  They are standing in the dining room, through the doorway I see the strawberry wallpaper in the kitchen and yellow curtains above the sink.

**Jennifer hates Math and loves to read! She has changed a little in 33 years!

Wistful Wednesday: Cakes

It was my Dad’s birthday yesterday.  He is 86 years old.  I can always tell how old he is..just add 25 years to my age and I have his.

scan0008 (2)

I was 2 years old in this photo in 1953 and Dad was 26 going to be 27.  Our birthdays are just 3 weeks apart.

This photo was taken at the farm, I can see Dad’s car in the background and a hay wagon and a stack of hay.

My Mom’s birthday is later in the week.  The celebrate their anniversary and their birthdays all in the same week.

October 15 1950

This is the top of their wedding cake.

I remember a pink box that was on the shelf in their closet for years.  Mom waxed the top layer of the cake and kept it wrapped in tissue paper in the pink box.  She also kept the rose petals from her bouquet..they were in the bottom of the garment bag that held her wedding dress.

This year we had pie for Dad’s birthday.  It was my turn to have “Cousins.”   Far Guy was not feeling up to having company in the house (he is getting better) so I called my girl cousins and we all met in town and had lunch together…Mom and Dad were our special guests.  The waitress brought out a cookie with a candle and we all sang Happy Birthday!

September 20

Well this is the day that comes around once a year that reminds me that I am not getting any younger.

1st Birthday Sept 20 1952

This photo was taken 60 years ago.

1960 nine years old Connie and Carey six years old

This one was taken in 1960.  52 years ago.  I was nine then.  I am not sure what my baby brother was doing with the BB Gun.  Maybe he was going to shoot the candles out on the cake. I am certain I did not get a BB Gun for my birthday.   Why?  Because I got a bike.

Birthday Bike 9 years old 1960

Yes, it was a boys bike.  I never learned to ride a girls bike.

I have my birthday off from work.  Far Guy has an appointment.  It will be a quiet day..perhaps I will have a nap:)

Wistful Wednesday :1956

Well lets see.. this was almost 55 years ago.

scan0011

Lorraine made me a cake. The whole gang gathered at the Wilsons.

scan0012

My Mother took this photo. She must have waited until after Christmas to get rolls of film developed.  This place is just down the road a piece from where we live, we often pass by there on our evening drives.

My friends were there, Janet, Rhonda, Carey ( My baby brother), Me, Corrine, Pam and Roxann. I have not seen Janet in years, or Pam or Roxann either.  I just saw my baby brother the other day..he stopped by to visit a few days.  Rhonda and Corrine I see once in awhile.

scan0010

I cannot remember what color this dress was..blue or pink or green..maybe purple.  I am certain that my Mother sewed it just for me for my birthday.  It looks like it was a warm September day.

No it is not my birthday yet..but it will occur sometime before the next Wistful Wednesday. ( I will let you know what day I am turning older than dirt.)

I am awaiting a great gift from Far Guy..better than the avocado green electric can opener I got in 1975.  Better than the orange wheelbarrow..maybe even better than the garage door opener I got a few years ago:)

Fifty Six Years Ago

Fifty six years ago my status as an only child, something I am sure that I excelled at, came to a screeching halt. My brother entered this world during a cold winter day and then it stormed for an entire week, at least that's what my Mother says. I was only two and a half years old. I occupied the only child space, and he was the one that shoved me out of my comfortable spot. I began a very important job, I was the big sister.

My Dad with my brother and me in 1954.

I should have made him play dolls and have tea parties or girlie games. Instead we played baseball and softball, playing hours of catch. His baseball mitt was formed perfectly, mine had a big wrinkle in it where the ball rested. I think he used to stand and practice throwing that ball into his mitt in front of the mirror. The second born could get by with that. We played basketball, practicing dribbling moves and shots from impossible distances. We threw the football, I was never very good at that, he had to teach me how to spread my fingers over the pigskin surface for a great throw that would spin in the air. If it had a ball in it, my brother played it, and taught me how to do it, sports came easy for him. He knew all the rules, I am not sure how he knew all this sports stuff..he just did.

In later years, when he got his own room with twin beds he also got the homemade curtains with the horses on them. I used to lay on his bed and covet those curtains. I had some boring beige fiberglass curtains that did not stir my imagination in the least. His curtains were filled with wonderful steeds that could dash you off into wonderful daydreams, he didn't even like horses. He would only get on the cows old bony backs if I insisted that his life was never going to be the same again if he didn't do what I told him.

He hated doing chores in the barn, there was no doubt in my mind that he would never be a farmer. He used to sit downstairs on the bench changing into his barn clothes ever so slowly. Mom would holler "Hurry up son" He took his sweet time. I can still see him with his head lowered sitting at the bottom of the stairs..with his barn shirt in one hand in great contemplation, he was a deep thinker and his life revolved around sports. He could be heard mumbling "I will never be a farmer." There was no sport in being a farm kid. If he had been a town kid he would have been off playing whatever neighborhood game was going on, forgetting to come home for supper. Instead he was stuck on the farm, daydreaming of sports.

My other baby brother, Far Guy, my Mom and my baby brother
 ( January 2010)

In his retirement years, he will probably Coach or Ref or Umpire. One thing is for sure, he won't be farming, although I have tried to talk him into grapes or an orchard. One thing he did very successfully was age.. would you look at that silvery grey hair..perfect..If mine was like that I could forget my trips into town for highlights! Happy Birthday to my baby brother!:)
