Well lets see.. this was almost 55 years ago.

Lorraine made me a cake. The whole gang gathered at the Wilsons.

My Mother took this photo. She must have waited until after Christmas to get rolls of film developed.  This place is just down the road a piece from where we live, we often pass by there on our evening drives.

My friends were there, Janet, Rhonda, Carey ( My baby brother), Me, Corrine, Pam and Roxann. I have not seen Janet in years, or Pam or Roxann either.  I just saw my baby brother the other day..he stopped by to visit a few days.  Rhonda and Corrine I see once in awhile.

I cannot remember what color this dress was..blue or pink or green..maybe purple.  I am certain that my Mother sewed it just for me for my birthday.  It looks like it was a warm September day.

No it is not my birthday yet..but it will occur sometime before the next Wistful Wednesday. ( I will let you know what day I am turning older than dirt.)

I am awaiting a great gift from Far Guy..better than the avocado green electric can opener I got in 1975.  Better than the orange wheelbarrow..maybe even better than the garage door opener I got a few years ago:)

Wistful Wednesday: 1956

Scan0084
This photo was taken in 1956.  It is of my Mother and her sister, my Aunt Marion.  My Mom is standing next to the old stove in the kitchen in the old farmhouse.  My Aunt has a fancy shiny satin dress on and she is smoking a cigarette, everyone smoked back then..it was normal.

It is a gas stove, with a old enamel coffee pot and a enamel pot that just held hot water, it has a pouring spout..but we never called it a teapot..it was just a hot water pot or a kettle.  Everyone had one on their stoves.  If you looked inside you could see the lime scale that built up on its interior.  Sometimes bits and pieces of it would sheet off into the water. Especially if the kettle was boiling for a long time..

The dinette set was grey which was a simulated marble swirly color, there were four chairs.  Far Guy and I still have the old grey metal table, it is in my garage.  We got it from my parents old resort, the new owners had hauled it to the dump in Osage, we were right behind them and picked it up..not knowing that it was my parents old table until my Mother said “We used to have one just like it.”

There are two crochet potholders on the wall, and two hot plate crochet things..the old –slip- something- fancy- over- a piece- of- cardboard –covered –in- foil. There is also an old metal match holder high on the wall, handy for the cook to grab a wooden match to light the gas burners or the oven.

The walls were rough, on the bottom part of the wall was a beadboard panel. I used this same type of panel in our bathroom upstairs..not quite the same as using it in a kitchen..but it is reminiscent of my childhood:)

Far Guy is much better today,  he will resume his normal activities…thank you everyone for your kind comments and prayers, we both appreciate them:)

Wistful Wednesday: Easter 1956

Easter in 1956,  Far Guy is holding the eggs really gently..his sister has a new coat and hat..and looky at that wonderful little handbag.   Far Guy would have been six, his sister was almost eleven.  It looks like there was snow that year for Easter...usually we have snow for Easter..it makes the egg hunt pretty easy.

This year we will bask in the brownness that our early spring has brought.  Warming our wintery bodies in the warmth of the sun, opening the windows at night and hearing the birds singing in the morning.  Hiding eggs that will show up in the dead grass.  I am not complaining, if it is a really cold stormy wintery Easter..you have to hide the eggs inside the house.  One year when Jacob and Rachael ( Nephew and Niece) were little the eggs were hidden inside the greenhouse..a toasty warm place for an egg hunt.

I remember the eggs that we used to color on Saturday, that adorned our baskets the next morning..and would be found in a big soup bowl on the center of the table by the end of the day.  I never cared for hard boiled eggs..especially the ones that were cracked and the dye would seep into the egg mirroring the crack that was found on the outside.  The smell of vinegar would linger in the kitchen..and the memory of trying to hold your egg under the goop the longest for the wonderful dark colors, trying to achieve a perfectly colored egg.  Attempting a two toned egg..one color at one end..another at the other..never being able to achieve it..because you only got to practice once a year:)

Wistful Wednesday: 1956

The year was 1956, my little brother and I. I was five years old and he was two years old.
There are lots of things I like about this photo.. there is that elusive white dog..part collie? in the background.. I believe that this dogs name was Frosty and he was a gift to me from my Grandparents D. They gave me many dogs as gifts...some of the gifts got ran over, one got tick fever..some just mysteriously disappeared. My parents cannot recall if this one was Frosty or not..I think it is. My Mother sewed our shirts..the pants I believe were store bought. I am surprised that we have shoes on, we must have been going someplace. I have no idea what I am holding in my hands..good grief could it have been a doll?? Probably not. This photo was taken in front of the picture tree..it was an old Honeysuckle..it was at the farm when we moved there. It became the spot in the yard where all the photographs were taken. It is still there, and it is still full of bees when it blooms. Did you have a special "Picture spot" in your yard when you were growing up? :)
