The sunshine was great yesterday, it melted a bit of snow...a few more days and we will be back to dirty snow. We escaped the rain...not sure who got rain but we did not.
Jolynns peonies as few summers ago. Do you pronounce it peeohnee or peeuhnee ? Is one wrong and the other right?
I just look forward to the blooms...and the fragrance.
Years ago my large clumps of peonies were a hiding place for a cat named Whiskers...she would hide amongst the foliage and pounce on anyone who walked by. She honed her skill at scaring people that summer and carried it over into the winter trapping Grandpa H in the bathroom and holding a Minister hostage by the front door and not allowing him past her rocking chair. Other than being anti social she was a sweet thing who didn't know she was a cat. We hand raised her from birth and obviously didn't teach her the things her mama would have.

I think people make too much fuss about which is the right way to say words. As long as it's clear enough that everyone knows what you mean, what difference does it make? Spelling needs to be consistent, but pronounciation just needs to be similar enough to make it clear which word you mean. Just my opinion.
I wonder how she would have been different if she had a mom.

Whiskers sounds like quite the cat. My Sami was a little like that, though we called her the Walmart greeter as she was the first to meet someone at the door. But, heaven help anyone who allowed her on their lap. Unless it was me, she didn't take kindly to being removed from said lap. Even my kids had to holler for me to pick her up.
Such beautiful blossoms Connie. I'm ready for some spring flowers even though we've had a fairly mild winter here. We pronouce it peeuhnee mostly but sometimes peeohnee comes out. :-) They are my friend Lori's, (in Spokane), favorite flower. They just don't bloom long enough in my opinion.

It is snowing to beat the band here. We're expecting 2-4 inches... spring is definitely a ways away for us! I love peonies but have not had much luck growning them. Have a great week!

We got rain. Lots of it. Turned our place into an icy water flowing mess.
I used to dislike the ant plants. My father-in-law (at the time) planted an old fashion one, right next to the human garage door entrance of the farmhouse we rented. I frequently brushed against it walking in/out of the garage and always had to do an ant check.
Now I love them and have three different ones planted where they can be appreciated, and not cursed at. My favorite is Coral Sunset!! It changes colors. I use both pronunciations.

I have always heard it both ways so makes no difference to me.

Pink peonies always make me think of my maternal grandmother. There was a whole row of them along her front sidewalk. And she didn't mind that I liked to pick them. Our fresh new snow has definitely sunk in the past few days of sunshine and warmer temps. And it's getting pretty dirty looking. I keep telling myself that means spring is in sight.
I had to say it out loud to find that I say Pee uh nee. That makes me think of how I sometimes hear someone say CLEM a tis while I say and have always heard it said clem AH tis.
Peonies did not grow in Southern California, so when we moved here (southern Missouri) and we had some in the yard, I asked someone what they were they said it was a "peeuhnee". That first summer we didn't realize ants were part of the blooming and we sprayed the plant and it ruined the plant for that year.
I say pee-u-nee now but grew up with pee-Oh-nee.

Ha! Love your comments about Whiskers the cat. Oh I must say that Peonies are one of my all time favorite flowers....the look and the fragrance! When I was growing up...we called them Pe OH' nees. But now I call them Pee' ah nees. Who knows why. I'm not sure if one way is correct over the other. Last year for Mother's Day my daughter sent me a whole bouquet of them and they lasted quite a long time and the fragrance was amazing, just like I remembered.
Hand raised pets lack the discipline their mothers dole out and it makes them not as desirable and ones raised by their mothers—I’ve read this but really don’t know first hand.
Hubby doesn't like peonies, I love them. I will enjoy them again when they appear! I'll move some around and split some too.
Funny about that cat! We've had strange pets over all of our years too.

Miss Peeps does the same thing to me. She lost her mother too when she was tiny.
I always said pee-uh-nee but down here in the South they say pee-oh-nee.
That is such a great photo of the peonies. I have lived here long enough now that all the ones that I planted from the old place are now blooming in the spring.
