Woodcarving by me!

We get a monthly magazine called Woodcarving Illustrated.  Every month I page through it thinking…hey I should make that!  I am always excited about something new to carve.

One issue had a Chess Set.   I told Far Guy about my idea…and he said “go for it.”  He cut the right size chunks of Basswood for me.

Luckily I had step by step instructions for carving.

I worked on them at our once weekly carving class.  Everyone gave me a bad time they thought I should do the entire chess set.   King and queen in progress

Heck I didn’t know if I could do two pieces let alone a whole set.

Finished king and queen

I think they turned out really good, I had someone special and his someone special in mind to send them to…they were sent and greatly appreciated.

This set was fun to carve.  Right now most everyone is carving ducks, except for Far Guy he is designing a purple coneflower to carve.  Bill is carving on the keys for a new nickelharpa and Sheila is in between carvings.  We have a good group of carvers.

I am back to carving little bark houses now.  I sold a number of them last summer.

The Christmas Ornament has not been chosen yet.  We have two ideas and just need some time to see which one will work.  We like to carve outside in the summer so we have plenty of time…I hope.

I like your chessmen. By the way Garter Snakes are harmless, never grow to be very big. They are good to find in a garden because they eat insects.

You really did an awesome job. I hope the recipient loved them. I know I would. You should think about doing the whole set.

They are wonderful! I do hope you decide to make an entire set, too. They would be so much fun to see on here. :-)

Oh my goodness! Those are beautiful! You really are so talented. Whoever received them I bet they fell off their chair when they opened your gift! Amazing! I love your little houses too and the flowers...for so long it seemed all you saw were ducks....not that they aren't beautiful too but how many ducks can you have? I love the variety you and Far Guy carve.

They are cute. DH was wondering what kind of wood you used and now I know it's basswood.
