Stirring and starting

I started some Gluten Free Sourdough Starter.  I am looking up recipes to try with the discard part of the starter.  It is all an experiment.  Maddie had a flop with her regular sourdough starter...she may have used it too soon.  Who really knows for sure?

Far Guy and I are making chicken in its own gravy on a bed of rice that is if the automatic rice cooker works... I can alway cook the rice the old fashioned way. (The old fashioned way worked...the rice cooker did not)

I did the grocery shopping on Monday and found a larger container for the starter...the pickle jar I was using was not conducive to a good stir.

It has warmed up considerably the high yesterday was  36F  or 3C that is 50 to 60 degrees warmer than last week!

  2. I have yet to jump on the sourdough wagon. My husband is diabetic, so bread is very limited in our diet. I am still on the fence, so I'll be watching your posts about your own sourdough for now. I need to get my home repairs list knocked down a bit to have more time in the kitchen.

  3. That’s the only egg beater we had growing up. Sometimes Momma used a fork. She must have had a powerful wrist.

  4. Our regular glutenated sour dough starter is nearing its second birthday. Once you get them going, they are hard to kill.

We learned long ago, there is no substitute for a Japanese brand rice cooker. We went through half a dozen American made ones in a couple years and then spent the money to buy a Japanese model and it lasted for over 13 years. It still worked but the lid was no longer sealing tight enough so we just replaced it last fall with a new Japanese model.

  5. Good morning. The wind has started to howl. Going to be in the low 40s! January thaw.
I am making a sourdough starter today too. Just a regular one. Should be interesting.

  7. Chicken and rice sure sounds good. I sure love your picture of all of the OLD little mixers. Thats what I call them...I think I have a couple of them that I picked up while antique shopping. Best of luck with that starter...hope the new container works well.

  8. I like hearing about your cooking experiments. My new bread machine works well but sometimes when the Canyon Hawaiian GF bread is on sale, I will get it. GF bread can be delicious - - but doesn't stay fresh as long. However I pop it in the microwave before eating and that helps. Those hand-held mixers are pretty. Were they at the store where you bought your new container?

  9. I used to make sourdough starter and bread. Then I figured life is too short and quit! I had on of those hand mixers. I have no memory of what happened to it.

  11. Starters can be picky, picky. Chicken in it's own gravy sounds yummy. When we had the Japanese students living with us we had a rice cooker because they ate rice virtually every meal. Not long after the last student moved back home, the cooker gave up the ghost. Honestly, I didn't care if I ever saw rice again after years of cooking it every day! Ha!

  14. I'm sure glad my rice cooker works. I use it all the time.
Good luck with your starter. I managed regular starter a very long time ago and used it for quite a while, but don't remember how long it took to get it going.
Every kitchen used to have those hand beaters! What fun to see them! :)

  15. Quite some years ago we had a sourdough starter that we kept going for eight or ten years, but then we became empty nesters and we just didn't need that much bread stuffs.
Egg beaters were a common tool in my early days'

  18. A friend of mine offered to give me some starter dough like that and as she then went on to explain how to handle it, my eyes glazed over and my ears shut down.
Lucky for me, she made a loaf for us!
    Phew!
