Fall Projects and thoughts

Yesterday we had a project day...well project morning anyway.  Recycles went to recycle and garbage went to the landfill.  Patio chairs, table, various lawn ornaments and a bird feeder went into winter storage.  I vacuumed up the counters in the garage and threw a bunch of stuff away....some old gloves, yucky rags and empty containers.  I brought the snow shovel to the front door in anticipation of snow.

Two things on my mind/in my craw this week.

Thursday the grocery store not Wally World had two checkouts open...they have at least eight lanes and four self checkouts.  I stood in one line for a bit...the cashier was coughing so much she was doubling over and then lifted off her mask to talk to people...can you imagine the hasty u turn I made to the self checkouts?  If a manager had been around I would have complained...that gal should not have been allowed to come to work...what is wrong with people?

Dancing with the half naked Stars... men could you keep your shirts on?  I don't mind watching you dance UNTIL your shirt is ripped open then I just want to fast forward or turn the channel.  There isn't one among them that has bald chest that is worth looking at.

Far Side

  1. I do not understand why businesses expect staff to come in to work when they are sneezing and coughing or worse. This is so mean and counterproductive for everybody. And what’s it all about? Money. I hope you have escaped those germs.

  2. That is my big beef too. Though no one wears a mask most of the time around here except for the older people. Myself will be included soon while shopping.
I was in an isle looking for something when I heard someone coughing a croup deep cough in the next isle. Two kids with their mom...hacking coughing like crazy.
I'm getting stuff in advance to hope to miss some of the winter shopping this year.
All the messaging during Covid about being careful not to spread illnesses seem to have been forgotten.
    That's my beef.

  3. Sadly, low income wage earners often don't have the option to stay home, because they can't afford to give up a day of work and don't have sick leave. On the other hand, like you I'd be turning around in the line-up and heading elsewhere.
Sound like you finished your outside winter prep and are ready for the snow. We got 14 cms (5.5 in) of snow yesterday. It's a winter wonderland out there...though I'd have been happy if it waited another week or so.

  4. Thank you for the nods of agreement and the chuckle this morning. You know how much I agree about the coughing check out gal - she needed to stay home! DWTS is something I record each week and then zip quickly through. My big dislike is listening/watching the judges antics. So I do fast forward even through some of the dancing sometimes. LOL

  5. Funny you mention the long line and hardly any check out clerks. I stopped at our Wal-mart one day, and had to stand in line for what seemed like 30 minutes. It wasn't the clerk, but the two women in front of me that were coughing and coughing.

  6. one of mine is girls and women too whose everyday attire has their breasts hanging out...like why do they think people are dying to ogle their breasts??? and why do they think that is good taste? exhibitionism has replaced decorum in many places...

  7. Forgot to ask, but is your scalloped potato recipe on your blog? Or can you share it? Thanks.

    1. Scalloped Potatoes
4 tablespoons butter melted then add 3 Tablespoons flour to make the rue, stirring constantly until it is thick and bubbly then add about 2 1/2 to 3 cups milk slowly. Stir until it boils.
Butter a 9 x 13 pan or an enamel roasting pan and add thinly sliced potatoes and ham cut into cubes, cover with mixture.
You can also add cheese on top…I like to add Parmesan flakes before serving.
Salt and Pepper as you wish…you can also add onions or garlic but I do not.
      Bake for about 60 -75 minutes 350F

  9. I always enjoy hearing about what you are doing outside. We did our major putting away a week or so ago before the heavy rains started and darkness fell.
We hardly ever watch the "Stars" dancing, but when I see it it seems like it gets more naked and more sex flaunting all of the time. I guess I, just old.

  10. I continue chipping away at my outdoor Fall list. I work on endless things until Mother Nature turns wicked and takes over. I figure whatever I don't get done outside will be waiting for me in the Spring lol. With the extended great Fall weather we are enjoying, I am getting more things done. However, my ceramic pot garage storage will wait for now. I still have blooming annuals in my pots! Little yellow (sulphers) butterflies continue fluttering and enjoying dandelions. I even did Yoga outside on our deck ~ in the middle of November!!

No clue why the famous feel the need to expose so much of themselves. I would have also switched lanes.

  11. Bad enough she was at work sick, but she could have been one of the few employees able to make it or (more likely) she desperately needed the money and can't afford to lose days. I had many jobs in my lifetime where we had zero paid sick days and no vacation days. All that I can understand...but taking her mask away to talk to people! Awk! That I don't understand.

  12. I didn't know that tv show is still on the air! As Maebeme said, low wage workers aare between a rock and a hard place.

  13. Love the picture of the barbed wire. I don't understand the check out lines these days. I had a buggy full of items this past week...However, there were only two lines open with checkers. The lines were terribly long. I decided to go check myself out...I finished checking out (about 40 items) and was out the door before the lines even moved. Guess I need to apply as a checker! LOL. Sounds like you all are Winter ready. And doesn't it feel great to get rid of unwanted items...

  14. I agree about the shirts!!!
I am nearing the end of fall chores.
I feel badly for clerks. If they don't work, they don't get paid.

  15. I stayed home all week because I’ve been hacking so much. I couldn’t imagine being in public or even feeling well enough to work even with a mask on. I’m hoping this week will be better.

  16. I have the same complaint about cashiers. They should stay home when coughing.

  17. I sure hope you dodged the bullet that was sent by that poor employee. She must not get any sick leave, par for the course, right?

  18. Sounds like you're ready for winter and snow. Might as well be ready, it's coming.
I keep a spare mask in my purse in case I'm caught near a coughing person but I'm not at all sure that it helps. GM

  20. I appreciate the checker was wearing a mask, and I am sure that she does not receive "sick days" and couldn't stay home, but please leave your mask on when you cough. That is the point girl friend!!! And if you even touch your mask, even involuntarily raise your hands to your face while coughing in the mask, sanitize your hands!!!
We did lots of shopping this past week and, of course, I ended up with a scratchy throat. I am going to get more and more curbside or deliveries. I just can't be around people who don't care.

  21. Our society is flawed in many ways and how we view/use sick and vacation days is one of them. Back when I was working, it never ceased to amaze me of the number of people who came to work sick and then that cascaded to weeks of lost productivity as their virus spread through the office. If there was a way to definitively prove things like that, charging the offending person who came to work sick with the lost productivity costs would surely put an instant stop to the practice.

  22. You were smart to walk away from that cashier.
There is a very bad respiratory virus going around in our area. More than a few have gotten pneumonia in less than a week from it.
Speaking of clothing, I wish middle-aged to older women would cover their chests, too. Generally you do Not have a majority of people who like looking at old boobs or even the cleavage. Or maybe I am incorrect on that.
Thanks for the updates. We love hearing from you.

  24. Like a lot of people said, unfortunately she probably didn't have any sick days or sick pay but that doesn't explain her removing her mask to talk. Very sad all around. We're betweem two Walmarts. One is all self-checking and the other usually only has one checker and the rest is self-checking. I may just start doing pickup too although when we go during the week it's usually not too bad.
We're supposed to have 100% chance of rain all day tomorrow so I'm looking forward to a day inside and crocheting a baby blanket for a friend. No outside work here!
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  26. LD....Seeing the rusted barbed wire brings back a lot of farm memories in southern Iowa. That is a great shot.
