Some of my cousins on my Dad's side of the family gathered yesterday for lunch. Seven showed up; Geraldine, Hilda, Wilma, Georgianna, Evelyn and Chuckie. It was a nice visit. Better than visiting at a funeral....plus we were at the place that has the wonderful Sour Cream and Raisin Pie!
I had a few old photos to share with the gals.
This is an old photo from1994. In the photo is Far Guy's Mother, me and my cousin Kathy. That is Mary Ann's head of dark hair, she is a sister to several of my Aunts. We gathered for a quilting bee to work on our 25th anniversary quilt. Many of the relatives embroidered a quilt square and they were all included in two double quilts. The photo was taken at my parents home on the lake downstairs in their large family room.My cousin Kathy was missed yesterday....she always like the gatherings. Perhaps the gathering she is having in heaven is much better! In 30 years every one in the photo has died...except me.
The quilts have never been used...they are like new.
Far Side
Fun! It is hard when friends and relatives start passing away. It just makes those get togethers all that much more important.
ReplyDeleteGlad you all were able to get together. Would love to see a picture of the finished quilts....I know they are beautiful. Sweet memories make life good.
ReplyDeleteI like to think I have tried more food related things than everyone around me. I can always say yes to having tried a particular dish or stump them by naming something I have eaten that they haven't. Yet I have never tasted a sour cream and raisin pie. My brain says I've possibly heard that combination of a pie mentioned or cited in a recipe book, but I've never seen one in real life, much less had a slice. My brain can't even quite comprehend how it would taste.
ReplyDeleteEd, The pie is a delightful mix of cinnamony raisin goodness, a nutty crust and a whipped cream topping.!
Delete! It's hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that it's been thirty years
ReplyDeleteSounds like a lovely gathering of family. The photo of the hand quilting is familiar to me - I'm sure I have one or two old photos like this of my mom and her friends.
ReplyDeleteWonderful memories as life passes by. I'm glad you had a good time with the cousins. It is good to get together for fun times too, (and sour cream raisin pie). My Grandma made the best sour cream raisin pie but never shared her recipes. She had several recipes that the family loved but she wouldn't share. Your family looks like a family that shared everything! :-)
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Betsy
I haven't met with a group of friends since retiring!
ReplyDeleteQuilting was a wonderful sharing experience. I have tried piecing quilt squares. Is not easy, an art. The corners never worked for me.
ReplyDeleteI am so thankful you got together just for fun and not for a funeral. I was just commenting to someone else about how fast the years have flown by - - - - she and I worked together when our girls were in high school and college and now they are 45 and 41. It's crazy how quickly life happens.
ReplyDeleteAt least you have lots of photos and good memories!
ReplyDeleteThat last comment was from me and sour cream raisin pie sounds delicious.
ReplyDeleteMemories! In photo and quilt form. Hugs to you Connie
ReplyDeleteI was looking at a family group photo the other day and only two people in it are still living. It's not easy, thinking so many have passed on. But we can be thankful we have the photo and can relive the time in our memories :) xx
ReplyDeleteThat is so sad there is no one left...but like you say, they are probably enjoying their time in Heaven...and saving a place for you. As to the quilts...do you have mixed feelings about them never being used? I sure would. I would not want them treated badly, but then I would like to think of them being used to keep my loved ones warm.
ReplyDeleteI had not heard of a sour cream raisin pie until I met Mark. I can't say I like it. I made him one long ago. One! You have good memories of good times with family.
ReplyDeleteI have cousins I wouldn't know if I fell over them there is only one I have any contact with and not much contact at that
ReplyDeleteGood memories and bad memories. I told my son that I have now lost 12 first cousins. I am sure he couldn't name one of them. I was sharing with a friend just yesterday about all of my quilt collection and I am not even an old lady. The friend had given some for a person to watch over for her while she was a missionary in Africa for 15 years and the person wrongly sold them.
ReplyDeleteGood visit with your cousins and lots of good talk about Aunties and uncles.
ReplyDeleteI am my oldest relative on my mother's side and have been for almost seventeen years. It was a sad realization then and still now. I feel the responsibility of the memories and try to share in general conversation with my brothers and my grandchildren. I also feel the responsibility of sharing my aunts and great aunts who never married or married but never had children. I don't want them to slip through the cracks of family history. Oh, and the closet full of unused quilts is at my house, too.
ReplyDeleteIt seems sad that the beautifully done quilts should not be at least hung on someone's wall or otherwise displayed. I'm another one who has never had Sour cream and Raisin pie. I wonder if it is an acquired taste. GM
ReplyDeleteGlad you could get together with your cousins for lunch. I LOVE Sourcream raisin pie! Lucky you.
ReplyDeleteGlad you got together with the cousins. Like your photo reminds us...life is too short. Hope you all can make it a regular thing. :)
