The rain is turning the grass green and the grass is growing. I am not getting the lawn mower out again.
The few leaves that were in our yard and on the patio blew away in the gale force winds on Tuesday.
I have an old mower propped up against this tree...you know the old push mower with the cutting blades that went around as you pushed. I believe it is called a reel mower. It took some arm power to push it in tall grass...I recall getting a run at it. At one time years ago...like 50 years ago you could buy a weed killer bar to attach to the back of the mower and all your dandys were killed...possibly it was 2, 4 - D who really knows for sure.
Now a days I leave the dandys in the side yard for the early bees, dandys do stop blooming if you mow over them often enough. But then again I have no neighbors that complain about them.
The rains in the Fall are good for the trees it will help get them through the winter. Our high temperature yesterday was 40 F or 5 C...it was a tad chilly but not cold enough to snow.
Far Side
I recently visited a suburban area last spring. One thing I noticed on the living room sized yards is that there was not a weed in sight.
ReplyDeleteMy country yard is full of delicious weeds in the spring. Dandy's, creeping charlie, and other plants.
I like that old mower, it looks like it is just waiting to go do something!
How I would love to have some 40 degree days. I haven't seen one of those old mowers in years. Glad you all are getting some rain and I know the landscape is loving it.
ReplyDeleteI've seen a few reel mowers over the years, some actually still in use by those with really small lawns, but never one with a weed bar attached. I'm guessing those were toxic as heck and probably the source of all sorts of cancers.
ReplyDeleteWe used to use a reel mower at the lake. It was kind of fun and sure gave you a workout. When I was a kid we had dandelions all over our yard. Everyone did and we played with them, making necklaces, mud pie decorations, etc. Now, your neighbors would be livid if you have them.

It really looks like autumn now. We used to have that same lawnmower at home! When my dad had to mow the lawn, he’d always get hay fever. So I’d do it for him. He really had it, I believe—he’d keep sneezing and would have to go lie down. On school days (he was a teacher), he wore sunglasses to help with the light. It helped a bit, and no one could see his teary eyes.
ReplyDeleteIt’s very quiet here; a little drizzle now and then. It was supposed to be a gray, dull day, but I saw the sun—hooray! And even a patch of blue sky. Another hooray! Sending love from here.
A good dump of rain in the fall is great for trees and plants. We did not get the fall rain. I think we'll lose lots of trees.
ReplyDeleteMy yard is a dandy paradise! I have never used a reel mower But I'm sure that's what my grandparents used.
ReplyDeleteIt's been raining here this morning, no snow yet though it's likely to happen soon.
ReplyDeleteI love those old mowers, but then again, I've never had to actually push one. :)
Don’t forget that dandelion leaves, especially the early ones, are very tasty. They sell them in supermarkets in France and Switzerland. Very nice with some French dressing.
ReplyDeleteMy father had one of those old mowers and I remember pushing it around the lawn and loving how the grass flew up from it. He eventually bought a heavy Hayter mower with a roller behind it, and I gave up mowing lawns!
ReplyDeleteThose old mowers had to be kept sharp to do a good job. Last week’s snow gave the trees here a nice boost of moisture.
ReplyDeleteI remember those push mowers. My grandma had one and I loved the whirring sound it made as it cut the grass.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny how I always think about you when I look at all the leaves waiting to be raked up. I need to get busy! I remember there being an old push mower at home when I was young. Using one now would probably beat me to death.
ReplyDeleteRain is good at turning grass green and helping things grow
ReplyDeleteWell, if you need the rain that's great but we've gotten a dump this past week and lots more coming on Saturday. At least it's not snow. GM
ReplyDeleteWeeds are what keeps my lawn looking green in the summer, lol. They are drought resistant.
ReplyDeleteWe had one of those old mowers but I never had to use it. I like leaving some dandelions, too. I get to wondering what all the perfection is going to lead to.
