Baxter and a Snapper

This time of year all the turtles come out of the water to lay their eggs in the sand/dirt.

Yesterday I spent some time with Baxter.  There was a Snapping Turtle in his yard.

Baxter is curious.

When the turtle reared up and hissed...

We spent some time down on the dock.

Baxter is good company...we both hoped that the Snapper wouldn't make it onto the dock while we were on it.

When we went up the hill the snapper was all eyes watching us.

I read for a short time and all Baxter wanted to do after our adventure was sleep so I went home to ride the lawnmower for a while.

  1. Those snappers can be nasty! All the excitement. No wonder Baxter needed a nap--lol! ;)

  3. Snappers are really scary! Glad Baxter backed off so he didn't get hurt.

  4. I had no idea that you had snapping turtles up there. Poor Baxter. It's almost like having a dog isn't it? You can visit and get your doggie fix with none of the responsibility or tied-down-ness of having your own. I love how much you love Sadie, Little Elvis and Baxter. They're so much better for having you around to love on them.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  5. I'm glad that Baxter had the sense to avoid getting too close to the snapper. I bet it could do some damage.

  7. I have never met a snapper in person. I probably don't need to. I'm glad Baxter heeded the warning.

  8. I am glad that Baxter didn't get his nose snapped. I remember the snapper on the farm and they could get mean when your brothers harassed them.

  9. No turtles here so Baxter would have no worries.

  10. My border collie would NOT leave the snapper alone. He ended up with a good nip on the nose as a result. Thank goodness it was just a little one, a big gal like yours could have taken his nose off!

  12. Oh! Penny met her first turtle too, not a snapper, and she was inside a pen, but a similar reaction by her and the turtle!

Good thing Baxter didn't tangle with it!

  14. This must be the year of the snappers.

  15. It's turtle season here too but I haven't seen any snappers. They are crossing the roads though and you have to ensure they are in the middle of your car when you drive over them...they are tiny ones...babies? I find the shells in my yard that the armadillos dig up.
