Ice Castle

They are building an Ice Castle on the beach in Detroit Lakes.

I have always wanted to see it.  It is not yet completed.  When it is done they have a gathering and it is all lit up.

They harvest blocks of ice to build the castle

The blocks are lined up on pallets until they are ready to be placed.

It should be beautiful all lit up.

It was fun to see it in progress!

Oh, that is going to be sooooo beautiful! The only ice we have around here is the container someone threw out on the ground at the ice cream store. I thought to myself that it's January and that's the only ice I'm probably going to see around here this winter. The koi pond in town is usually iced over this time of year but they were all happily swimming around yesterday begging for food.

Wow! What an achievement! I hope you get to see it all lit up and you can take pictures so we can see it too. I hope you don't get a heat wave any time soon!

I've always wanted to visit an ice castle. We won't have much ice here after this weekend. Sunday it is predicted to be 46 degrees. I'd like to not see that! I want winter to be winter...

It is looking good - we saw the one they did a couple of years ago (and it is really cool). Hope you get over there when it is finished (go late afternoon so you can see it with the lights on).

That is going to be amazing! I remember the big ice castle in St Paul every year for the winter carnival. We only went in person once, but always saw it on TV each year.

Thick ice! I've seen historical photos of ice harvest. Any idea how they do it now?

Oh wow! I sure hope you are able to get photos of it lit up and share with us. Dennis' grandpa was an iceman. His hands were HUGE and he had arthritis in them terribly bad because they were so cold all of the time. I remember him showing us the big tongs he used to pick up the blocks of ice. He actually drove a horse and wagon when he started in his teens and didn't retire until he was almost 80! That was in Omaha.
Thanks for sharing with us.
Blessings,
Betsy

I didn’t know they did one in Detroit Lakes. We used to drive to St Paul some years (the warmer ones!) to take the kids to the one there. Loved the lights at night. I liked seeing your photos of yours being built.

Saranac Lake is about 45 minutes from us and they build a beautiful ice castle every year. Each year there is a theme and they have a week long winter carnival in February. They have been building ice castles for the carnival since 1898.

Never saw it while I was going to school there. But my roommate would tell me stories. And I hear they make one similar in China. ( The "cold" part of Mongolia.. I think.)

Oh, you have to go when it is finished and lit up so you can share it with us.

How cool that you got to see the building of that ice castle. I hope you will go back when it is all done and lit up! I saw an ice castle or palace in St. Paul during the winter carnival in 1992 when we were in town to see the Super Bowl. It was all lit up and gorgeous. I'll never forget it. There were ice sculptures in the park too which were so fun to see. Thanks for sharing those great pictures!
