Unexpected encounter

On our after supper ride we noticed a bird on the edge of the road.  It most likely had been hit by a car.  It was kinda flopping around.

Far Guy picked it up.  It was a Common Flicker.  They sure are beautiful close up.  We moved it into the ditch where at least it can die in peace or recover to see another day.

Yes we were tempted to do more for it, but sometimes wildlife is best left alone…except on a highway where someone else could run over it.

So glad you could put that bird out of danger. I hope it survived.

I echo the words of Mildred above, hope it was just stunned.

I hope it can shake it off. Lots of times they just stay still until they get over the shock of a hit. It is a rarely seen bird in our area.

It is a beautiful bird. Is it really snowing up there? The downtown webcam is not working.

Yes flickers are pretty. We are fortunate enough to see them all winter.

They are beautiful. I don't think I have seen one here. They maybe here, but I've never seen one.

They really are beautiful birds. This really brought back memories! Too long a story, but I hand fed young flickers in a tree truck hole when their mother was killed by a cat when I was about ten years old. The memory has be grinning from ear to ear. :)

I've seen a lot of birds recover from being stunned and fly away. It's best to let nature take its course as you did

I think that's the best you can do. It will make it or it won't. We have flickers here all of the time. they make an impression when they land on the small suet feeder, or decide to rat-a-tat-tat on the metal chimney cap.

It is so beautiful. I sure hope it survived. It is hard to know what to do with an injured bird. Lots of times they do just need a quiet place to get over the shock. I think you did the best thing.

Flickers are magnificent birds! At this time of year it's not uncommon to have them drumming away on the metal 'chimney' or the transformer on the utility pole which makes a great racket. Apparently it's all in an effort to get a mate.
I hope the one you helped survived.

What a beautiful bird! I agree, sometimes we should leave well enough alone but glad you moved it.
