Happy St Urho's Day!

Since we are Up North for the Winter we miss the St Urho's Day parade.  It was held last Saturday when the weather was horrid here...we didn't even think about traveling.

If you are not familiar with St. Urho...legend has it that he chased the grasshoppers out of Finland when they began eating the grapes.

"Heinasirkka, heinasirkka, menetaalta hiiten"   Grasshopper, grasshopper get the hell out of here.

We don't have enough Finnish people around here to celebrate! However come May the Norwegians celebrate Syttende Mai which the is their Constitution Day or separation from Sweden day.

I do enjoy the different celebrations all over from different cultures.
Go Away Grasshoppers!

Our town always had a parade. It ended in 2020.

Happy St Urho day to you. I even know how to spell Urho now. I see other posts about St. Urho now . at one time you were the only one beating the St. Urho drum.

I hadn't heard of this until a few years ago with your posts. It's wonderful that your community keeps this tradition and history alive yet with fun activities.

I hadn't heard of this saint until you mentioned him. I don't know a lot about Northern European culture, even though I'm Minnesotan. I grew up and lived over half my life in an area of St. Paul where it was not the dominant culture. I know, strange.

Happy St. Urho Day Connie! I always laugh at his shout. :-) Sorry you missed the parade but better safe than sorry. It's snowing like crazy here today, it was 66F yesterday!
Blessings,
Betsy

Happy St Urho's Day! That Finnish "holiday" always makes me laugh, which I think it is supposed to do. The Irish can't have all of the fun.

I remember when we had the pesky locust back when I was young and we could of used St. Urbo for sure. I like the Finish flag.

A national hero who rids the grapes of grasshoppers - sounds like a fun story but I imagine it actually has some very real facts behind it and is well worth celebrating :)
