Jen is taking a beginning quilting class and had homework to do during retreat. The instructor is apparently very accomplished but unable to write so that beginners can understand what to do to create an 8 pointed star ( which I think is very complicated and more for advanced lessons)...needless to say we had many scraps while trying to create that square. We were supposed to use the tri rec rulers...which proper quilters with experience possibly know how to use. I helped as much as I could with my very limited quilting skills and barely a C in Home Ec sewing class years ago ( the C was a gift...because my Mom finished my sewing project for me...a pleated skirt.)
I admire my daughters persistence...and anyone that can sew a straight seam and make beautiful quilts.
This art work is made totally from wood scraps. Jen designed it and Andy helped put it together.
It is the perfect addition to one of the walls in the hallway at Gather in Laporte.

That is a stunning creation, and I think Jen is lucky to have such an accomplished person as you to guide her.
That sounds like a very advanced quilting class, not beginner. Is the teacher trying to show how accomplished she is or discourage the newbies to quilting? I'm sure that Jen will be able to finish the bocks beautifully if that wood art is any indication of her talent in such things! I love your description of your home ec experience. I learned exactly zero in my home ec class.

I love my tri-recs rulers and use them frequently. There is actually a set of patriotic stars going right now using those rulers. Had to chuckle over your home ec story. My mother was a talented seamstress who had worked in the industry and she was always very critical of my home ec projects. She made me pick out stitches and redo things more often than my teachers did.
Try the Missouri Star Quilt Company tutorials for beginners...they're great!! I've been quilting since I was a child and I always learn something new from the videos.....

The piece of art made with strips of different wood is truly amazing.
I admired that wooden sunburst when I saw in in the earlier photo. It's wonderful! And the good thing about wood is you don't have to figure out the seam allowance when you cut it.
I have only tried nine patch quilt squares.
That sure doesn't sound like a beginner's quilt class. I never make anything with triangles... just square blocks for me! I love the wooden piece that Jen created, it's just beautiful!

That wall hanging is beautiful! Jen is super talented...I can't imagine where she got that from?!? Your SIL is no slouch either! I try not to attempt anything too difficult....it's hard on my ego.
It is a wonderful design. I saw it on the wall in your past blog and admired it. The use of various woods blended into a starburst really does work well. Good job for all who were involved
Oh my goodness! Jill is an artisst too! Had to laugh at your making a C in Home Ec. So did I, plus I got a C- on a little half apron I made. An apron, of all things!
Jen's wood scrap art is beautiful! I haven't made an 8 pointed star yet either. I have done the carpenter star and that was very easy. jo
