Wistful Wednesday: School Days 1959-1960

We are slowly collecting class photos from Far Guy’s school days.

Class of 1968 in 4th grade Mrs Tidrick 1959-1960

This is Mrs Tidrick’s 4th Grade class 1959-1960.  Far Guy is in the back row second from the right. Seems there were a couple of “Cub Scouts” in his class. (Far Guy was a Cub Scout too, different Dens met different days of the week. Far Guy’s Mom was Den #7 leader…probably “A Wolf Pack”)

Far Guy said “I am wearing the same shirt as last years class photo?”  I answered “Your Mom probably liked that shirt and bought it in a couple of sizes!”

He remembers very little about this year or the teacher. He does recall that this class was in the old school.

What he does remember is that every kid had to stand in front of the class and tell what their Dad did for a living.  When it was his turn he said “My Dad is in the Outdoor Show Business.”  The teacher asked “Movie Business?”  No…Outdoor Show Business… she kept asking questions finally he just blurted out CARNIVAL Business…and that shut her up.  He said all the kids knew anyways…just not the teacher.

Park Rapids Schools were big enough back then to have at least three sections of each grade.  Trying to find all the sections of his graduating class throughout the years has been an adventure that continues.

School started yesterday as usual for Minnesota schools, the day after Labor Day is always the first day of school.

Back to school

Today is the day that all the kids go back to school in Minnesota.  We did some errands yesterday and Wally World was filled with kids and Moms in the final day of back to school frenzy.
I remember those days…trying to get the girls to settle down at night and go to sleep when it was still daylight…clothing set out for the next morning and backpacks filled with school supplies.  New shoes ready to be worn.
Jen and Trica 1983
1983 Jennifer and Trica in Moorhead Minnesota.
They were up before the alarm and sitting at the table dressed and ready to go in no time…but would barely touch their breakfast.  Too excited to find out who was in their class.  The big question would be Hot Lunch or Bag Lunch…they both had likes and dislikes with school food, but both liked Pizza Day which was usually a Friday.
Trica and jen off to school 1983
Off to school…they were old enough to go by themselves we lived just a block and a half from the school.  Trica in 6th Grade, she had a Mr Larson for a teacher and Jennifer off to Second Grade…where her teacher was…??? a lady by the name of…??  See I must be getting old…that brain cell that used to know that name has died. Well that was 33 years ago. Jen will remember and leave me a comment.  It was Mrs. Robertsdahl...I had to look it up!

There was to be no horsing around after school, they were to come home, change clothes, have a snack and then they could go back outside and play with friends (with permission) or do homework.

Flag Day

Seems to me that many people forget about Flag Day…that is today June 14.
Flag
We fly the American Flag on Far Guy’s garage.

When I was in fifth and sixth grade, the students put up the flag in the morning and took it down at the end of the school day.  It was then that I learned about the flag and how it should never touch the ground and how to fold it properly.

I wonder do kids in school learn hands on like that now or do they just read about it in a book?

When Flag Day would fall on a day that the museum was open, I would have old soldiers  from the American Legion come over and hold a flag folding ceremony.

Do you know that each fold means something?  I did but that is probably only becauseI am an avid reader and I read about it someplace!

Sidetracked

As you know, my husband is the Class Babysitter Historian for his Class of 1968.

I don’t get too involved…especially when the popular wenches girls won’t let him scan their precious grade school photos.  He gets upset when he shares so much and a few of the cheerleader types won’t share a thing.  Then one finally came through while cleaning out a bunch of “stuff.” She had a photo of one of the Kindergarten class of 1955-1956.  There were three sections.  Far Guy has photos of two sections. He is missing the section that he was in….that is a bummer.  Maybe someday!

Na na na na prissy little Mary M in the front row with the polka dot shirt can just keep her old photos.
 K class 1955 56
School was a lot different back then…you could bring your cap pistol to school. One of the little boys in the front row has a long rifle…probably a BB gun.

I am only the tech person.  I deciphered the Class Roll from Kindergarten Graduation, the children were not listed in alphabetical order???  So I made notes from the other photo we have and discovered that they are listed by class.   That makes the identification much easier.  I also said save the photo here and print it there…high tech “stuff.”

kindergarten 1955-1956 (2)
Since we know who was in the last photo that remains elusive, perhaps an email here or there will yield some results.  Never give up hope. Who knows I may find the photo in an antique shop someday.

These little kids all turn 66 this year.

Wistful Wednesday: Another School

When the community got together and built a new elementary school, they didn’t build it large enough for the fifth and sixth grade classes.

So when it came time for me to leave the elementary school (fourth grade)…I went to the old school in Osage.

School Building Built in 1938

This building was built in 1938 so when I went to school here it was only 24 years old.  The building was a two room schoolhouse.  Fifth grade was on the left and taught by Mrs. Tillie Zeller, to the right was the sixth grade class taught by Mr. Martin Cox. Mrs. Zeller was a grandmotherly type teacher…ample in all the right places and kind with an endless supply of floral dresses.  Mr. Cox was very young…possibly in his first few years of teaching. He had one burgundy/maroon colored sweater that he favored…but often times wore a suit.  Both classes had about 16 students…maybe 18.

We walked over as a group to the Elementary School to have lunch and I recall walking to Release Time Classes (Religion) on Wednesday mornings at Dorothy Noeske’s home.

There were swings in the school yard and one of those marvelous Merry Go Rounds you know the ones with heavily rutted paths all the way around.  You would grab ahold and run like the wind and then hop on…and if you were really brave you would wrap your legs around the bars and fall backwards your hair blowing in the breeze…laughing..always laughing.

Eventually the fifth and sixth graders were sent to Park Rapids to school…not sure when.

The school became a Community Center and served the Community in that capacity for a number of years.  Far Guy’s Grandmother Tracie was instrumental in it becoming a Community Center and a place for Senior Citizens Hot Lunch…her group raised funds to update the kitchen and to have the building’s roof repaired.

IMG_0908 Now it is back to being the Osage Schoolhouse.

IMG_0911

Times change. The township sold the building.  Last winter crews were there working everyday…electricians, plumbers and carpenters.  Finally it was done.  There is even a deck off the sixth grade classroom.

I have not been inside.   They had an open house but we missed it.  Supposedly it sleeps twenty people and has a number of bathrooms.

I remember that the oak steps beyond the front door one set going to the right and one set to the left were worn from children’s feet…and the cloak rooms had their own unique smell…wet wool….and the blackboard was massive covering most of one wall in each room.

Wistful Wednesday: Grade School

The Grade School that I went to as a child was built and completed for the start of the 1957 school year when I was ready for First Grade…I was five when school started and turned six later that month….back then I think you had to be six years old by December 31st to go to school.

My parents had purchased a farm that was near a country school (Linnell School)…you could see it from our home. I would just have a short walk to school!

The building of the new school in Osage split the community…sometimes this split is still evident.  Some were in favor of a new school building and others thought the country school was good enough…and neither side spoke to the other side unless it was necessary.

Mrs. Pearl Sexton taught first grade, Mrs. Minnie Zauche taught second grade, Mrs. Lucille Stearns taught third grade, Mr. Oscar Vaadland taught fourth grade and was the principal.  He had a yard stick with a red bow on it and if you were misbehaving you got whacked with the stick.  The school nurse came out about once a week, not sure what she did other than keep track of who had their shots.  Each classroom had their own single bathroom and there were two other proper boys and girls bathrooms in the hallway.  Not sure why the classrooms were positioned as they were: 1st, 4th, 3rd and 2nd. There was a library room, an office, a milk room off the cafeteria ( it continually smelled like sour milk) a kitchen where Arvilla Nilson was the best school cook ever, and the cafeteria/gym.  Carl Nilson was the boiler operator, janitor and bus driver.

Everyone went outside after lunch.  In the winter we played king of the hill on the mountains of snow and in the spring and fall we would take turns swinging…there were maybe six swings and some monkey bars.

The last day of school we always had a whole school picnic with our parents invited and all kinds of fun games…sack and relay races.

I rode the bus to school, the bus driver was Ivan Siegford (he owned the hardware store in Ponsford and began his route with the Ritt’s girls over on Shell Lake.)  I got on the bus about 7:45 in the morning and got off at 3:45 in the afternoon.  For me it was not a long ride to school…about 7 miles. There were only a few stops after I got on. I loved a window seat on the bus so I could look out on the passing landscape and in the winter those frosty bus windows became a canvas for thumb print designs…and whatever else I could scratch into the frost.

IMG_0913

I took this photo the other day…it is now apartments and is owned by one of my cousins.

I learned to read ( See Dick, see Jane!), spell, write in cursive, how to add, subtract, multiply and divide.  Division was the worst for me in third grade…until one day “it clicked.”  I can still smell the thick white paste in the big jars and I remember how everyone smelled the purple mimeographed paper before beginning our work.

Wistful Wednesday : First Day of School 1981 and now

Guess that makes it 34 years ago.  We were living in North Moorhead and the girls were going to George Washington Elementary School a block and a half from our home.

Trica was beginning 4th grade and Jennifer was beginning Kindergarten.

1981 first day of school

Looks like Trica had a Strawberry Shortcake Satchel…and Jennifer probably had a Strawberry Shortcake book bag.  It must have been a chilly first day of school.

Kindergarten was difficult for Jennifer. She didn’t like leaving me alone/being away from me.  She walked with her sister to school in the morning.  I was to pick her up at her classroom…over a few weeks I met her across the street from the school…then at the end of the block and finally I waited on the front step…and before it got cold I got to wait inside the house!  Kindergarten was only half days back then.

Trica is finally through with school unless she decides to take more classes.  Jennifer goes to school everyday to teach and she is taking a Graduate Class this year….not sure why…maybe she misses being a student… she has her MFA already.

The Grands went back to school yesterday, we have an 8th grader (Adam), Junior (Paige), Post-Secondary Options Program Student(Noah) and a Senior(Maddie)…and Savannah is taking classes at Northwest Technical College.

Noah should graduate with a two year degree the same time as he graduates from High School.  Paige is also taking some College Level Classes that her High School offers.

Seems like only yesterday that they were trudging off to school with their backpacks almost bigger than they were.

Wistful Wednesday: Second Grade 1957-1958

I am trying to organize some of my husbands class photos.   I looked at this one and took it into my scrapbook program and added some names.

There are a few unknowns…but less if it were left for me to do all by myself.

All these second graders will turn 65 this year…and get their Medicare Cards.  Far Guy is waiting for his to show up.

Second graders 1957 1958

Three of these classmates are known to be dead.  Their names are in red.

That would be Far Guy in the back row next to the gal with the question mark.  I cannot figure out why he doesn’t remember who he was standing next to…certainly he liked her!

We see and hear for a few of these youngsters/oldsters.  We see Jackie all the time…she is our Pharmacist.  We see Connie in the grocery stores some days and had a really nice visit with Carol after a Funeral.  We haven’t seen Dave C in quite some time.   We saw Vern just the other day he is the newest Hubbard County Commissioner now that he is retired from Waste Management….or maybe it is the same thing just a different building…shame on me.. or not.

I wonder who the teacher was? 27 is a fairly large class…and this class was a handful all throughout their years in school.  I know because I was in the next years class and the teachers were always relieved to be done with them.

Wistful Wednesday : 1958-1959

Recently one of my husbands classmates shared this old photo.  It was the third grade class in 1958-1959 at the Osage School.  Mrs. Stearns was the teacher.  She was also my third grade teacher.  ( I was in second grade when this photo was taken.)

3rd grade class 1958 and 1959 Mrs Stearns Third Grade Osage MN

We have identified all but two or three of the students.  I dated Bobby ( loud plaid shirt) in the back row, he died in 1972 from injuries sustained in a snowmobile accident. Ken died in 2005 he is next to Bobby.   Rhonda is in the front row, third from the left with the scarf, she died in 2009 from MRSA and complications from MS, gosh I miss her.  Johnnie fourth from the right in the front row died in 2005 from sleep apnea.  In the middle row is Diane (white blouse) who died of cancer in 1995.

Several of us…including Bill in the back row second from the right commented on Gary the ladies man (plaid shirt front row) being between Rhonda and Gloria.   Far Guys cousin Alaska Guy is on the left end of the front row.

A few days after seeing this photo Gary with the plaid shirt in the front row died.  He was awaiting a lung transplant.  He had some kind of hereditary lung disease.   We  visited with Barb (Gary’s wife) just two days before his death, she was getting her ducks in a row to head to Mayo, she said Gary was sick and had been up all night coughing…the next day she took him into the ER.

Gary and Barb got married right after Gary turned 18 in February 1967.  They were both Juniors in High School at the time.  They were madly in love and got married in the church across from the High School.  They were married 47 years.

Back in 1967 you could not be married and be in High School.  You could be pregnant and a tutor was assigned to you but if you were married and not pregnant you were not allowed to attend.  ( Perhaps being married and having sex would rub off on other students…)

I remember when it was announced that the school officials found out about the marriage and kicked them out of school. (I believe we were in Biology class when they came and got Barb and she came back crying saying she was kicked out of school.)   None of us thought it was fair.  After that there were a few more marriages…but secret ones…announced right after the graduation ceremony…the school officials couldn’t do a thing about it then.

Students should have the right to learn and attend a high school …married or not.  I think it was a form of discrimination which is probably no longer acceptable.

An old friend

A long long time ago ..oh not that long it was about 1960.  I guess that makes it more than 50 years ago…back to the long long time ago.  I was 9 or 10 and in the 3rd or 4th grade riding Ivan Siegford’s bus to school.  Sandy was the last stop. She was  a real looker.  Blonde hair and a nice smile, on “Dress Up Days” at the high school she would wear heels, long dangly earrings and beautiful necklaces that matched whatever outfit she was wearing.  Sometimes she would sit with me, being the last person to board the bus seating was limited.  She must have been a freshman that year.  Then the bus route changed and she rode a different bus.

Years later she would find our Greenhouse and we would have wonderful visits about the school bus and life back in the 1960’s.  She loved dogs and always brought at least two of hers along with her when she got flowers.  She had no children. I shared with her how I admired her choices on Dress Up Days…she said she enjoyed those special days at school too and felt so grown up wearing high heels to school.

Then one spring she didn’t show up.  Somehow I had missed her obituary in the newspaper.  I never met her husband, but it would have been good to attend the funeral.  She died ten years ago in 2003 from some kind of cancer she was 57 years old.  Her husband died last winter.

There was an estate sale.  I was running on time to work and could not stop in the morning.  After work I stopped.  I saw a lady carrying two boxes of Shiny Brites..darn..too late.  I asked her if she was going to buy them, she replied “Oh no they were just sold I am holding them for a fellow.”

Sandys estate box one

Turns out the fellow was Far Guy.

Box two close up Sandys Estate

This is the first year my “Sandy” ornaments will join the Shiny Brite tree.

Box two from Sandys estate

Dangly earrings, high heels, flowers, dogs and now Shiny Brites…all things that remind me of a friend so long agoSmile

Wistful Wednesday : First Day of School 1961

I was almost ten and going into the 5th grade.  I went to an old two room school house which later became the Community Center/Senior Citizens Center in Osage.  Mrs. Zeller taught the 5th grade, she was a kind lady.  I would get A’s in Spelling, Arithmetic and Social Studies and struggle to get a B in Science.  I got a pair of glasses before school started, it was probably the first time in five years that I could actually see the blackboard.  I would remain blind as a bat without glasses. Mom marked this photo 1960 but it was 1961

My baby brother would have been going into second grade with one of my favorite teachers ever, Mrs. Zauche.

Didn’t everyone wear a scarf to school and white anklets back in 1961?   Those white anklets drove me nuts after they lost their elastic they would fall down and eventually get all bunched up under my heel. That dress was beige with dark brown and teal squares. I have no idea what color the scarf was and my taste in bracelets was minimal.

Sharpening pencils. Remember that sound on the first day of school ?  Everyone had to sharpen their pencils, that must have driven the teacher nuts. We didn’t have one of those crank pencil sharpeners at home, when Dad was home he would sharpen our pencils with his knife.  We had one of those little hand held worthless sharpeners.  Far Guy was lucky, his Mom used to be a teacher and they had a crank pencil sharpener on their back porch ( because she was a teacher is probably why it was on the back porch.)

I love to stroll down the aisles that have all the school supplies. I wandered around one day recently and came home with some new pencils, pens and a notebook. What a great variety of school supplies there are nowadays! I purchased some ink pens that are all different colors of ink..pink, green ( as I scribbled the green on a piece of paper I realized that my husband used to use a green pen in high school), purple, orange and boring old blue. I like the .09 mechanical pencils…there is a difference…the .07’s lead breaks too easy for me. I am picky with my pencils.

School started yesterday here in Minnesota.  The neighborhood “gang” all reported a good day!  Miss Aubrey started kindergarten, her brothers Gavin and Jordan and cousins Anna and Mason all escorted her from the bus to her classroom.  Kate reported that the teacher said “There was a whole group of kids with Aubrey this morning!” :)

Have a Happy Day

This is a sign that was given to my old bus driver when he retired.  His co workers had the sign made for him.

IMG_5201

I smiled when I heard the story behind the sign..it was hung on one of the buildings at his retirement home.

He died a number of years ago..but I will always remember his smile and how his eyes twinkled when he greeted the kids on the bus morning and night.

Country kids..we knew nothing of having our own car with which to drive to school..we rode the bus.  We appreciated the warm ride to school in the morning, and being left off at the end of our drive every night.  It was our bus driver that got us there safely…year after year.

We didn’t misbehave on the bus..it was a privilege to ride the bus..and we didn’t take that privilege for granted.  If we messed up and got kicked off the bus..or even got a “pink slip” we would have found ourselves walking to school..for me that was 15 miles..so I just kept my hands to myself, looked out the window and enjoyed the ride:)

Wistful Wednesday: 1958

This was my first day of school in 1958.  I was in second grade.

First day of school 1958 Second Grade

A wonderful neighbor lady by the name of Minnie Zauche was my second grade teacher.  I adored her.  I loved reading..learning to read opened a whole new world to me.  I was a good reader.  Mrs. Zauche said I talked too much in the lunch room but I still had a fairly good year in the second grade.  Sometime during the year I had my tonsils removed and got to have soup in the kitchen with Arvilla until my throat was all better.  Arvilla was the school cook, I loved being sick enough to get special care in the kitchen.

This is the step that faced east in the old farm house.  Through the door was a porch that was cold and drafty. Another door in the porch led into the kitchen.  I think this was the year that the Christmas tree was out in the porch.

I think my coat was Robin’s Egg Blue, and my Mother sewed it for me.  The house was white..weren’t all farm houses white back then? :)

Wistful Wednesday: 1957 First Day of School

I started school in Ray North Dakota.  It was my first day of first grade.  Away from home..strange town, strange school..my Dad was part of a road construction crew. We were in North Dakota just for the summer..but apparently we stayed into the school year.

1957 Connie and Carey Ray ND First Grade (2)

That is me and my baby brother.  It was not his first day of school..I am not quite sure why he was in the picture..probably just because he was cute.  We are standing just outside the door of that wicked trailer house.  It had an improper ground and if you touched the sides of the door as you went in you got a shock.  I hated getting that shock.

First day of school Ray ND 1957 (2)

Here we are arriving at school in a 1955 Chevy.  I think it was green.

1957 Ray ND number 2

Doris Kaatz, Carey, Deann, Connie and Mike 1957

I am not sure of the little boy in front..he must belong to Doris..but I cannot remember his name.  This was another family who was out on “the road” for the summer.  All the kids played together…jacks and marbles being my favorite.  ( I wonder what happened to these kids? )

First day od school Ray ND number 3 (2)

It must have been a cool morning since we all have jackets on.   I remember nothing of the school day..other than I was scared because I knew no one.  I remember these photos being taken and some others from that time..but school..nope no memories of a teacher or anything.

What do you remember if anything about your first day of first grade? :)

Wistful Wednesday :1958

In the school year 1958 to 1959 I was in second grade.  My teacher wrote this on my report card.  “She is doing good work in all subjects.  She does beautiful written work and is very conscientious about finishing her work.  But sometimes she talks too much in the lunch room.”

Second Grade 1958 1959

Just when I was doing no wrong..my big mouth got me in trouble.

My second grade teacher was Minnie Zauche,  I adored her.  Her husband was a Forest Ranger.  Because of them I became interested in flowers and trees.  They lived just a short bike ride away.  They had extensive gardens and an orchard, in the summer something was always blooming and Mrs. Zauche was happy to show you something in her gardens. Many years later Mrs. Zauche retired and I was chosen to represent our class and present her with a red rose.  She got one rose from every class she taught..she had a huge bouquet!

They had a daughter named Becky. Sometimes she would babysit for me and my baby brother.  She would lay on the couch, my brother and I would take turns laying on the back of the couch or on the floor and we would scratch each others backs. She would call for a switch and my brother and I would trade places, since she remained on the couch her back was always being scratched!  Sometimes I would ride on the back of her bike..one time I got my heel in the spokes of the bike..and we both cried. She was the best babysitter we ever had.  Since she had no brothers or sisters she liked taking care of us..at least I think she did.

My favorite dress from the second grade.

Sapphire Blue Dress

It still looks pretty good for being 53 years old.  It is another one of those treasures tucked away in the trunk:)

The Buckskin Jacket

Far Guys Dad had this buckskin jacket made for him.  He wore it..you can tell that a little boy must have played cowboys in it. There are no photographs of him in it.
The buckskin jacket
Perhaps his sister remembers something.
Perhaps he wore this with his Davy Crocket Handkerchief..we have that somewhere it is almost worn out.  ( Note to self..locate it someday.) Perhaps he put on his side arm..in his Gene Autry Holster.
We always wanted a photograph of one of the grand boys in it.  It was either too small or too big.  Perhaps a Great Grandchild will pose in it someday.
I can always hope that he wore it for kindergarten class pictures.  The theme seems to have been cowboys and cowgirls.  There were several sections of kindergarten that year..he was not in this section.  I am hopeful that someday someone will bring some more old class photos into the museum.

Linda, Mark and Jackie are in the middle row in the center with the huge smiles! Floyd is in the back row third from the right.
Nowadays that little kid in the front row third from the right would be carted off to jail.  Times have sure changed:(

Wistful Wednesday: 1958-59

I had the occasion to scan some very old photographs.  They are from Jackie.  She was gracious enough to share so that we could make copies for the museum.

In 1958-1959 Far Guy was in third grade.

third grade PR 1958-1959

He is in the back row..second boy from the right.  I asked him what the teachers name was.  He does not recall.   Perhaps blog reader Ann knows, she is in the second row fifth from the left..with the poufy hair!  Jackie is the gal next to Far Guy..he had to take turns..between he and his friend Mark they are standing next to Jackie in many of the old class photos.  There were several class sections per grade.

This photo was taken fifty-three years ago..most everyone in this photo is retired or thinking about it.   We spoke with Betty the other day..the little gal in the second row sixth from the left..she is counting the years and the days until she is 65.

I asked Far Guy what he remembered about third grade.  He said “ I don’t recall the teachers name or anything that happened that year.”

My third grade memories:

Third grade seems so long ago..I remember it as the year that I learned how to do long division.  I struggled and struggled with it..until one day the light must have come on, from then on I could do long division.

My Teacher was Mrs. Stearns..a neighbor lady who died just last year. She was a wonderful teacher.  She had beautiful dark hair and wore red lipstick.  We said The Pledge of Allegiance in the morning and prayed before going for lunch in the cafeteria/gym.

I can almost feel the hard desk seat that swiveled to the side and see the desk that had a top that lifted up to expose where all my books and supplies were neatly stored.  The stub of a pencil is posed over my math paper, when I am not forming numbers I am making teeth marks in the outer shell of the yellow pencil.

Do you have any third grade memories that you would like to share today? :)

Osage School

The school in nearby Osage was built and finished so that I could attend First Grade in the new school in 1957.  No country school for me..my parents bought a farm close to a country school with thoughts that their children wouldn’t have far to walk to school. I rode the bus.  Ivan Siegford was the bus driver. He and his wife owned the Hardware store in Ponsford. I got on the bus at 7:45 to 7:50 every morning to ride six miles in to school.

The old school has been renovated and it is now apartments.  We were invited there one afternoon last week for coffee.  One of Far Guys shirt tail relatives lives there.

Osage School outside

I stood in line to get on the bus in this covered area for four years.

The Water Fountain

I could hardly believe that the drinking fountain between the first and fourth grade classes was still there.  It looks so short.  I stood in line here too.

Lunch line Milk Room way to the auditorium

I think the door on the left was a furnace room.   The double door further down was the milk room..that is where we went to have our milk break and it was also the room were the girls were segregated from the boys to watch a short film on how our bodies were changing.  The boys were oh so curious what the girls film was all about.  As far as I remember the boys had no film to watch in a darkened room with the School Nurse.

Straight ahead was the entrance to the gymnasium/lunch room.  To the right are two doors one was the in to the lunch counter and one was the out.  The “in” door is not in the photo..and that white door has been added.  I stood in line at the “in” part to get lunch.  I loved school lunch..Spanish Rice was one of my favorites and green beans and cooked carrots and peaches.  We were encouraged to finish our lunch and we had to show our lunch tray to the Principal Mr. Vaadland before we could leave the lunch room.

It was an interesting afternoon that brought about many memories:)

Treasures in the Trunk: Red Dress

Whilst I was rummaging around in the trunk I found some things that our daughters will have no idea where they came from, or why they were saved..they could guess of course..or they could read the blog.

First day of Third Grade 1959

My Mom marked the photo.  First Day School 1959 Stuart, Iowa. We spent the entire summer and fall in Iowa while my Dad was working on Road Construction in the area.  I started Third Grade there and after two months we went back to the farm.  I loved Stuart Iowa. There was a library, and I had my own library card..for a reader like me it was pure heaven.  There was also a city park and a bandstand.

My Mom sent the dress out to me one day when she was cleaning out some of her old boxes.

My red dress from 1959

I suppose I should have ironed it..but it is old..and ironing it now may damage the fibers..besides that I just put it back in the trunk after the photos anyway.

This dress now has provenance .. yes this is a historical dress..a 53 year old historical dress.  Provenance means “to come from”  usually it is reserved for great works of art.  In my case it works for the red dress.  I know it was a store bought dress, and I wore it many times.  Not my favorite dress..but it was my second favorite dress. I only wore it one season..cause then I got breasts and nothing fit right ever again:)
