Sidetracked

As you know, my husband is the Class Babysitter Historian for his Class of 1968.

I don’t get too involved…especially when the popular wenches girls won’t let him scan their precious grade school photos.  He gets upset when he shares so much and a few of the cheerleader types won’t share a thing.  Then one finally came through while cleaning out a bunch of “stuff.” She had a photo of one of the Kindergarten class of 1955-1956.  There were three sections.  Far Guy has photos of two sections. He is missing the section that he was in….that is a bummer.  Maybe someday!

Na na na na prissy little Mary M in the front row with the polka dot shirt can just keep her old photos.
 K class 1955 56
School was a lot different back then…you could bring your cap pistol to school. One of the little boys in the front row has a long rifle…probably a BB gun.

I am only the tech person.  I deciphered the Class Roll from Kindergarten Graduation, the children were not listed in alphabetical order???  So I made notes from the other photo we have and discovered that they are listed by class.   That makes the identification much easier.  I also said save the photo here and print it there…high tech “stuff.”

Since we know who was in the last photo that remains elusive, perhaps an email here or there will yield some results.  Never give up hope. Who knows I may find the photo in an antique shop someday.

These little kids all turn 66 this year.

OMHD and other eyes

Son in Law Handy Andy is testing out a pair of Google Glass  es to see how they could be used in his Robotic’s program.  (He teaches robotics and other cool stuff)

Haven’t heard of Google Glass?  That is where the OMHD come in. Optical Mounted Head Display.  Basically a computer screen in a set of glasses…you can read your mail, find the weather, record a video…all kinds of cool stuff.

I tried them on, I love that it takes voice commands…oh yes your Smart Phone must be linked to the OMHD.  It found my blog ..no problem.   It was like being in your own little world…and you scroll by making up and down movements in the area of the bow.

Front view of Handy Andy’s brother Carl.  He is focused!!

Ain’t technology grand!  Just so you know I received no compensation for this endorsement…but if Google Glass is reading this I am all set to do a winter trial for you…oh crap that would mean I would have to get a phone…no thanks.

Ok now for the other eyes.  A few weeks ago Noah showed me a pair of contact lenses that he ordered.  Uffda.

Well here they are.

Noah scary eyes He enjoyed posing for photos.  I think they are kinda scary…but hey when you are 15 you should be allowed to try some weird stuff.

eyes and kinda purple hair

You might also notice a purple cast to his hair…I understand it was mostly purple before the temporary color washed out.

For the record his Mom dislikes his new eyes…of course anything to do with eyeballs makes her weak at the knees…she requested that he remove the contacts before Thanksgiving Dinner…and he did. Because he loves his Mom and of course he was hungry.

Pow Wow : The Grand Entry

We recently attended a Pow Wow, before taking any photographs we asked permission. Photographs are permitted, except during the Pipe Ceremony. A friend of ours is the Spiritual Leader of this Tribe. He smokes the pipe to begin the Pow Wow. He said the pipe had regular tobacco in it.. and maybe it did. It smelled pretty good to me. Anyway he puffs on the pipe and presents it first to the East saying something. I am close to him..within 15 feet and I still cannot hear what he says. He puffs and faces south then west and north. Then he puffs alot and holds the pipe to the sky and then puffs some more and presents it to the ground. Then as quietly as it started the ceremony is over. Tobacco is taken in a shell shaped dish to all the people that are going to be in the grand entry. The Grand Entry begins.

The Eagle Staffs and Flags

The Royalty came next, the elderly lady in the scooter is the "Forever Princess." I was a tad concerned about her, at one point she buzzed her scooter up next to me..she was smoking a cigarette AND she was on oxygen.

The Dancers..first the men..

Then the older women and women with small children. They encircle the entire group..dancing on the outer edges of the dancing circle.

When the Staffs and Flags have made a full circle, younger dancers join in.

A Pow Wow is a Native American gathering to dance, sing and visit. The Pow Wow grounds is made up of circles, the first circle in the middle is the circular shelter that shields the drum and the drummers from rain and the sun. Then there is the dancing circle, then the spectator circle, a covered area where you can sit. The circle beyond this is a walkway that is circled with tents and trailers, you can purchase bead work, jewelry, T shirts, fry bread, french fries, shaved ice, hamburgers, hot dogs..and yes even cheese curds!

Cheese curds are hunks of cheese covered in a batter that are deep fried..all melty and yummy!

This shopping/eating circle is surrounded by a parking circle, that is in turn surrounded by a camping circle with tents and RVs and campfires. Many people camp out at the Pow Wow grounds the entire weekend. Far Guy and I live about 8 miles away from the Reservation so we went for part of the afternoon..then we went back again in the evening for the Grand Entry. I had a blast taking photographs! :)
