Sadie and cooking with Maddie

Sadie loves the pool. She has her own dock that she can use to get out of the pool.  Lately she is being difficult bringing back the pool ring.  She retrieves it just fine but then will not give it up and takes it way on the other side of the pool and drops it…we will get her figured out soon.

Maybe we just need a bucket of toys!

Maddie and Baby K were over, Baby K slept the entire time.

We made scalloped potatoes with ham. Maddie likes to learn how to make different foods for her growing family. We made the rue with equal parts butter and flour (1/4 cup each) stirred and stirred some more then add 3 1/2 cups of milk and stirred some more until almost boiling then poured over sliced red potatoes and ham sliced up in bite size pieces. Bake for about an hour and fifteen minutes at 350 degrees F. I have an oval blue and white speckled enamel pan that I like to use for many things I put in the oven. I like to add some Parmesan Cheese before serving. ( If you make the rue with rice flour it is a gluten free dish)

Noah stopped by after work to check on the elderly.

Happy first day of July!

  2. Although we adopted our golden retriever dog as a dumped stray that was fully grown, we never could teach him to drop things. He was great at jumping into the water to retrieve but as soon as he came to shore, it was always a contest of him keeping the object from us as we chased it down and get it from his mouth by force while telling him to drop. Every. Single. Time.

Scalloped potatoes was always one of my favorite comfort dishes made exactly at you described. Unfortunately, I have become lactose intolerant and can't eat it... at least not without taking pills and making sure I am going to be around a bathroom in very short notice at some random time the following day. Thus I tend to follow inertia and just not eat it anymore, among many other things I used to enjoy like a scoop of ice cream on my sour cherry pie!

  3. Those grands are checking on you two oldies. I think it’s called role reversal! 🤭 Sadie has an independent streak to her.

  5. I think your grandkids are enjoying having you close by so they CAN visit daily. And how wonderful that Maddie wants to learn various recipes that are probably good childhood memories.

  7. This is a great that Maddie is interested in cooking and that she has you to teach her. Sadie girl looks good up there on the deck of the pool... My daughters dogs enjoy our pool and sometimes try to take over with all of their splashing... Hope all is good in your neck of the woods....

  9. Sadie is a water baby! It must be fun to watch her and all the others in the pool. That is the coolest above ground pool I've ever seen. Did Andy build the enclosure? Do you parboil your potatoes first for the scalloped potatoes? Good for Maddie learning from the expert!

    1. Hi Sam yes Andy built the deck, he can build almost anything! Nope I just peal and slice the potatoes…no boiling required!

So nice that Maddie likes to learn new recipes for her wonderful family. Add some cheese in those potatoes and those are my favorite ones! :)

  11. I wonder if I have trouble making good scalloped potatoes because I don't bake them long enough. You baked yours an hour and 15 but it was a big pan full. I make much smaller recipe. Still....next time I'll bake mine longer.

  13. Sounds about like the way I make scalloped potatoes, but I add cheddar cheese and a bit of chives. This is making me hungry!

Sounds like a nice day. Is that far guy in the pool picture? Thinking of you both and praying for you every day. Take good care.

  17. LD...My mom made rue two meals a day. Milk gravy was a standard always. I didn't know the exact measurements but my wife makes the rue around here anyway.
