Cooking Day

Friday was a cooking day.  My baby brother and his bride brought over fresh picked produce from their garden.

New potatoes and carrots joined a hamburger patty for an oven meal that cheese will be added to before serving.

We used to do these all the time when we were camping.  Some people called them Hobo Dinners...our girls called them gore~slop...yes they made up a word for them.  Some people add onions...I do not.

Then I cooked up green beans, cooled them and Far Guy vacuum sealed them for me.

Potatoes were cooked, cooled and sliced for potato salad.

I pulled a chair up to the fridge and straightened it up...now I have a bit of room again.

We stayed indoors because of the wildfire smoke.

Far Guy felt a tiny bit better after a couple of naps.

  1. We love to make foil packet dinners on the grill, but we have not lately. I love to roast beets with onion, rosemary, and thyme in packets too. Looks delicious.

  2. That slop is my kind of good eating. New potatoes don’t even taste the same as the aged store bought ones.

I need to clean my fridge. Sitting in a chair might help me get mine done too.

So glad FG had a little better day.

  3. I didn't know you still have smoke. But I'm glad FG is feeling a tiny bit better. Right direction, eh?

  4. Good Saturday morning Connie. I hope you both are feeling a bit better today. Hopefully the winds will change and you get a chance to get outdoors and breath some cool clean air. It was hovering over us in Ontario too. It is so bad this year. Us folks with respiratory issues are really feeling it aren't we.

  5. My neighbor dropped off some wonderful green beans, tomatoes, and other fresh stuff from her garden. I made a salad and included many fresh veggies to go with our supper.

    Those hobo burgers look good.
Right now we are socked in with heavy fog this morning!

  6. I've had those sorts of dinners when in the scouts but never at home with a working oven. Now you have me thinking though...

This time of year is one of my favorites when it comes to eating. I love going out to the garden and picking some things and then using them to plan my meals for the day.

  7. Cheers to feeling a tiny bit better!! That was a fun favorite camping meal when I was a kid. I did make it in the oven a few times when my girls were growing up, but haven't done it in decades. However I do make little potato or veggie packets for the grill sometimes. I got fresh green beans this week and we had them for 2 meals - so yummy! The farmers market hasn't had fresh tomatoes yet however - we had such a cold wet June that they are behind.

  8. I enjoy those kinds of meals. Sounds like you all had a productive day and how great it always feels to have the refrigerator cleaned out. Glad FG had a good day...

  10. Hey, you remind me of when I wrapped things in tin foil and barbecued them . They were very, very good.

  11. I used to make those dinners with my girl scouts.
I played catch up with zucchini and cucumbers from the garden. Soon my freezer will be stuffed with more zucchini than a family can eat (no one will take it from me and I can't waste it) and I keep saying this is my last batch of pickles. . . . We have vines and vines of green tomatoes.
