Happy St Urho’s Day!

March 16th is a mighty fine day.

tis the day of the Finns!

St Urho

Today is the day that Finlanders all over Minnesota celebrate Saint Urho's battle with the pesky grasshoppers that threatened the grape crop. He chased the grasshoppers waving a pitchfork hollering "Heinasirkka, heinasirkka, menetaalta hiiten"...Grasshopper, grasshopper get the hell out of here.

  3. Hey, we have one of those blue and white umbrellas, we could join in the parade, although I don't think there is a Finnish bone in our bodies. Well maybe Larry, he is of Icelandic heritage, and that's within visiting distance of Finland! Happy St. Urho's Day!

  5. I learned about St. Urho's Day living with a Finlander for seven years--many, many moons ago. We had to visit the statue, of course. ;)

  11. Yep, I would not care for the fish stew either. I missed the day to celebrate but I usually enjoy seeing your Finnish friends celebrating it on your blog.

  12. I think I should celebrate St Urho's day instead of St Patrick's. I am much more Scandinavian than I am Irish. Do you have to wear blue?

  13. Happy St. Uhro's Day! I had no idea there had been a problem with grasshoppers or that you grew grapes up there. That grasshopper was huge too! LOL! Enjoy!
