Cemeteries

We spent most of the day yesterday at cemeteries.  We visited six yesterday and three the day before.  We took along a bucket and a butcher kife, many of the grave markers needed a good edging.

This marker was  rescued.  I remember one time when I was little and this grave was near the fence  (the fence has been moved back now) and the grave marker was not visible so my Dad hunted for it and cleared it off.  This is my Dad’s brother who died when he was six months old.  Some of these old stones should be raised up.

After wandering around a while we finally found Far Guy’s Great Grandparents on his fathers side of the family.

The Fern-leaf Peony is almost past bloom in the cemetery just down the road.

The blooms are smaller than a regular Peony.

Thanks for all that you and Far Guy do. I am proud to know you both.

Memorial weekend. Two more close relatives at the Cokato cemetery this year--my dad and my aunt. When my mom flies up to Minnesota in June my sister will take Mom to see her sister's grave while she's up here. I'm sure they don't take care of that cemetery as well as you and Far Guy would. :)

I wish we could visit our family graves this weekend, but they're all in California or Oklahoma.

I took flowers to the cemetery yesterday, too. I remember going with my Mom every year to decorate the graves: now I do it alone.

I'm going Sunday morning, I think my oldest daughter is going with me. I always feel such peace in a cemetery.

Thanks for cleaning the cemetery stones. You are not only doing it for your family, but also preserving the region's history.

I am assuming that Memorial Day has to do with keeping the memory of loved ones that have passed on. In any case, I like to ramble around old cemeteries but this would be far more interesting if anyone buried there was related to me.

To me that was the best part of ancestry --the hunting in a old cemetery.

Here in some of the cemeteries graves have not been cared for as all relatives have moved a long time ago. It's sad to see neglected graves.

We might venture out to locate a family grave we have not yet been able to find. Other than that, we are not making the rounds of cemeteries this year. They are all quite far away. I do like poking around in them though.

That's good of you to take care of the family graves.

Those graves look lovely with the flowers.

My grandmother always used her not sharp butcher knife to clean out her iris of weeds. I can still see here chopping with it on the walnut table that I have today. Lots of cuts in the top of it and I would never remove them. That would be frustrating to have a stone that keeps getting grown over.
