Saturday’s Bloomers

The purple plants are in bloom.

Campanula

Baptisia australis

Blue False Indigo or Baptisia australis

Lupine

The first of the Lupines is in bloom.

We attended the 50th Anniversary celebration for my cousin Chuckie and his wife Mary Ann, we went shortly before the doings started to avoid most of the perfume soaked women that would be there.

We came home and Far Guy worked on leveling the road (getting rid of some ruts) and I put away rummage sale stuff and cleaned part of my garage.  Far Guy came back and I tried my hand at leveling…I did just fine moving dirt from one area of the road to another…trying to level it out. It was a very humid warm day. 79 F or 26 C eh with 75% humidity.

Saturday

What a week!  Got a little weeding done last night…I find it theraputic just to yank weeds out of my little flower garden. I get almost as much enjoyment out of weeding as killing poison ivy!  I took some junk to a small sale in Osage…got some sun…and sold a few things…not a huge sucess but less stuff our daughters will have to deal with.

Loon Flag

Put up a new flag.  This is my “too much “ flag.  Iris never bloom the same time Ratidida…not sure what the pink flowers are.  The Loons should be sounding the alarm with the Eagle in the air…yet they seem calm.  The artist just didn’t know when to quit.

Trail Cam

This weeks trail cam showed lots of Chance coming and going, Odda coming for a visit but no bear!

Deer in the yard

This deer visited during the day and at night.  They think that the wildflower garden is pretty tasty.  When I sprayed for poison ivy I noticed a few things had been trimmed.

I missed the Stanley Cup Play Offs but Far Guy gave me a recap of the game…so glad The Capitals won!  Warroad Minnesota should be very proud of their home town player!   I went to Bingo with my Dad, we were both lucky and each shouted Bingo once!

Thursday again

The native Columbine is blooming.

Columbine

Aquilegia canadensis

I mowed the lawn again, trimmed some, sprayed some Poison Ivy and a few other noxious weeds.  Took care of an ant hill that was growing larger by the day…and have a plan for its complete destruction.  Vacummed out the vehicle and various other jobs that were calling my name….those old repeat jobs; laundry, cleaning, scrubbing floors.  Far Guy has been grilling…hamburger one night and ribs the next so I am just incharge of fruit. Making weekly menus has really worked out well for us.

We have about 24 of the 2018 Christmas Ornaments ready to paint….so we are about 1/4 done.  I will wait for warm afternoons to paint indoors…or maybe nice days outside!

It has been a busy week!  We got rain on Tuesday night and the weather is lovely in the 70’s F….just perfect!

Far Guy has thrush again…and medication to take care of it…maybe.

Wistful Wednesday: June 1973

In June of 1973 we were on leave between Lowry AFB in Denver and MacDill AFB in Florida.  We went home to Minnesota before heading to Florida.

Scan0091 (2)

Yes in June in Minnesota you may need a sweater and a hat on a small child.  Our daughter Trica was 14 months old.

Scan0092 (2)

My baby brother (19 years old) and Trica on a rope swing in the back yard at my parents farm in Carsonville Township.

Recently I saw a mother with a almost new baby…with no hat…and the day was chilly, a blanket wrapped losely around the small child.  What is wrong with new mothers now a days…babies need to be wrapped up. I guess it is no skin off my nose if they want to spend all night up with a screaming baby.

Trica was prone to ear infections and keeping a hat on her made all the difference in the world !

Yard report: Lilac

Years ago Far Guy planted a Lilac, a Trillium and some Phlox.

The late blooming Lilac is beginning to bloom.

Late Lilac

It has a number of blooms…finally.  Most years we are lucky to get one or two blooms.

two Trilliums turning pink

The Trillium turned color before I could get a photo.

Phlox subulata

Some of the Phlox subulata survived the winter.

We got some rain over the weekend, and the day time temperatures are in the 70’s…just about perfect!

Chance: Sharing

Hiya it is me Chance the most handsome Border Collie in Minnesota!

Far Side woke me up early on Friday morning and took me to the groomer…she said she was done trying to make me look good by herself.  I didn’t want to come out of the car and down the ramp at all…she had to yank on my harness and put one arm behind my butt to get me started…she said I was being a pill…well I just didn’t want to go inside that place.

It was a tough day for me and it tuckered me all out.  Far Guy picked me up all by himself. I had no problem going up the ramp for Far Guy. Far Side disappeared but showed up late the next day.  She checked on me in Facetime I guess…I was asleep.

Thirsty

That bird is getting a drink.

Birds must share

The bird could have stayed…I would have shared.

Yard patrol

Most of the time yard patrol looks like this.

Heard something

I get up when I smell something.

Then I bark..and scare Far Side who is sure it is a bear.

Heard something else

It was just a deer… I barked and it ran away. Far Side woulda got a photo but she was too busy looking for a big black bear not a brown deer.

I don’t hear much anymore, my eyesight close up is so bad that when I am given a treat it must be an open palm…I mistakenly can bite a finger and make people say bad word bad word.

When Far Side was gone, Far Guy fixed my food…he was eating too so I wanted what he was having so he let me smell of his dish and I grabbed a piece of muskmelon spit it out before going back to my own dish…that fruit stuff tastes terrible. So much for best buds sharing everything.

Sunshine

I received this stamp in the mail one day from Kansas…it makes a lovely card!

Fun with a new stamp

Some days you have to create your own sunshine! Tis a good reminder for me…

Our days have been so busy….Dr. appointments…getting ready for a garage sale…finally we have a whole week where we don’t have to be anyplace and I plan to enjoy everyday!

Garage sale #1 is done it was in conjunction with our daughter Jen up north…a city wide sale…and I got rid of lots of “stuff” and got to visit with daughter Jen and Grandson Adam…and meet his gal. (She is very pretty…and shorter than I expected, somehow I pictured her as being really tall!!)

We are enjoying The Stanley Cup finals…and hoping TJ Oshie’s team wins.

Fern Leaf Peony

My Fern Leaf Peony from Larry was covered with ants.

Here you can see that the ants are still busy.  Ants love peonies.

It was a beautiful bloom this year!

Small flower garden

Having a flower garden here under the bird feeders where squirrels eat flowers, dig them up or break them off and where bears walk in the dappled shade of the Oaks is a challenge.

I bought flowers at two different places.  Red, white, blue and yellow are the colors I wanted in the garden.

IMG_9832

One tray of plants…the other got planted instead of photographed!

These are mostly new plants to this garden…we will see how they do.

Impatiens(red and white), Salvia (blue), Lantana( yellow), Begonia (red), Browallia (blue), Snapdragons (yellow), Lobelia (blue) and Pansy (blue).  I wasn’t going to get snapdragons but they were yellow…what can I say.

IMG_0004

I planted yesterday…in the rain…I was out there and had half of it planted when it began to rain…so I just enjoyed the rain and finished my project as it was the one thing I wanted to accomplish yesterday…well that and the third time mowing the lawn.

IMG_0030

I trimmed around trees while keeping Odda company until her Mom came to get her.  Our not so perfect lawn is a nice color green anyway…the dandys drive me nuts but the bees like them.

IMG_0008

Lantana

IMG_0009

Far Guy picked these Pansies, they are not exactly the color he wanted…but he said “close enough.”  I think he was tired of wandering around greenhouses with me.

Hopefully the bear is elsewhere…he hasn’t been here for several nights…when I was planting I thought about that bear and wondered where he was.

Wistful Wednesday : Graduations

55 years ago Far Guy’s sister graduated from High School.

1963 Jan Graduation from High School

Jan Class of 1963

Ran onto a relative at the cemetery (a non dead relative) who said “It will be Jannie’s birthday soon, wish her a happy birthday!”   We related the well wishes to her as she turned 73 this week…she said “That part of the family always called me Jannie.”

G Grad 1968 jpeg

50 years ago on May 29, 1968  Far Guy Graduated from High School.  Note the same table and lamp in both photos.  Cousin Tom’s photo is on the table, he graduated the same year from Detroit Lakes Minnesota.

The plans for his 50th Class Reunion are still in the works.  I don’t get involved.  He has women calling him all the time.  Seems like he is the ring leader and is the only one that really knows what is going on.

Bear

We had a nightime visitor. A black bear…about 5 plus feet tall.

Visitor May 27 early am (2)

WGI_0123

WGI_0121

He tried to chew into a wire mesh feeder and knocked down another feeder.  After that we load up the feeders in the wheelbarrow at night and put them in the garage.

I let Chance smell of the damaged feeder he didn’t seem interested or impressed at all.  The bear left us a poopy present near the sauna.  The bear poop looked like a cow pie only darker and full of seeds ( just incase you were curious).

Exciting times out here in the boonies!  The bear visited homes over on the lake too…he/she was caught on a trail cam over there.

Decoration Day

My grandparents and Far Guy’s grandparents called it Decoration Day.

Old soldiers grave

It was called Decoration Day until 1967 when it was offically declared Memorial Day and became a Federal Holiday.  After World War II many people began to call it Memorial Day it was just not official yet.

At any rate it is a day that we set aside to honor those who died in war.

Phlox at Osage cemetery

It has evolved into a day when we remember all those that have died…perhaps the cemeteries should look nice when people come to visit the graves of the war dead.

We only visited two cemeteries this year.  There just doesn’t seem to be enough time to get to all the cemeteries I would like to visit.
