Owl Puzzle

I came across a beautiful little puzzle that was a gift from Nancy last year, I had tucked it away for a special day.

It is a wooden puzzle with very vibrant colors.

The back is very interesting too!  Note the bird shapes.

Thanks Nancy it was a fun puzzle!  Nancy lives in Wyoming, she is a marvelous knitter and makes Quilts of Valor for Veterans, I have enjoyed her blog for a good long time!

We got some snow yesterday and it blew around.  Far Guy got his usual Thursday Infusion it was a one stick day...so that was good!

Busy Day Wednesday

Virtual appointment in the morning, some laundry, I met a long time blog reader Kay from Kansas in the afternoon over at her beautiful place on Potato Lake.  I had a very nice visit and the opportunity to pet both of her dogs!  On the way home I stopped at my parents, they were on their way out to a fish fry with old friends from Indiana....so I walked them to their vehicle.  Dad gave me a hug but there was no smile to go with it...so I am sure he did not know who I was.    I did some grocery shopping for some hard to find items and came home and made supper.  After supper we took Ranger Blue to do recycling and took a ride around the block....a country block is 4 miles:)

Rainbow and clouds

After we got home I wandered through one of the wild gardens.

Black eyed Susans.

My ever vigilant husband locked up for the night.  Apparently he was talking to me and I was not answering ( nothing new about that)...it didn't dawn on him that I was still outside.  I would have been locked out!  However my other baby brother and she who sees robins first stopped by for a visit...she had jury duty yesterday but the case was settled and she got released.  I am very jealous of her getting called for jury duty...I have never been called...that and her hair is turning the most beautiful shades of silver.  I have been working on this grey hair thing for years...and she just started going silver during covid and is way ahead of me! ( Far Guy is helpful...he says he will work harder at helping my hair get more grey.)

Card, Carving and Town

A sweet card came in the mail!  Thank you Cynthia!  The card is darling.  I love the french knots and all the stitches that make the card special!  The Owl is a tiny bit puffy and he is displayed on a patchwork of fabric and stitches.

I put it above my desk in a flower frog that works great for holding cards.

Town Report:  Far Guys Infusion went well.  I made stops at the bank, post office, grocery store and meat market.  The meat market has no shortage of meat.  Things missing from my grocery order this week; Dawn Dish Soap...they substituted something weird and I hope it is not smelly, ammonia I use it on the tile floors....however I can use vinegar instead.  Tater Tots...who knew...we thought they would be good in the air fryer.  Cara Cara Oranges...Naval oranges were substituted. No Lysol Disinfecting Wipes.  We ordered from two grocery stores this week...pick up was at two different times...good thing we have lots of time to run back and forth to town...oh well we used up some ageing gasoline!

Someone asked about the wood carvings I spring cleaned.   Here is one.  They look so pretty when they are not dusty!

This is one of my favorite carvings.  It is a Black Walnut Lady Slipper that Far Guy carved.  Behind the Lady Slipper is an Purple Coneflower that Far Guy carved.

Good Guess

Nancy over at Wyoming Breezes had a contest to see who could guess how many small quilt squares were in a pile...my guess of 233 was real close.  Nancy makes Quilts of Valor for Veterans in Wyoming, she also knits!

Nancy said a package was on the way.  I had no idea what was inside that package.  It arrived safely and it is just perfect! Nancy kept encouraging me to keep knitting socks!  She knows me well as she and I have been following each others blogs for many years.

Sock yarn and a Christmas Ornament!  Thank you so much Nancy!  The ornament will be a great reminder of our special friendship!

Jeanne’s Book

I met a blogger a long time ago…she has a wicked sense of humor.  She has finally realized her dream of having a book published.  It is called The Demon Always Wins.

I bought the book from Amazon. It is a paranormal romance novel.

Finished the book a few days ago.  It was entertaining.  Not my usual kind of read but I enjoyed it none the less.

As soon as the book arrived I made a book cover for it…it is difficult to make a book cover when your eyes are closed.

Why a book cover?…those of you who know me well should have guessed by now.

Here is a link to Jeanne’s website

My review:  It was a entertaining, sexy, wildly descriptive good read.  I give it a 4 out of 5 stars.

Way to go Jeanne!  I am thrilled that you are published and look forward to the other books in this series.

Painted Rocks and a book

We got special mail last week.

Rock painting

I have been to this place on Lake Superior…it makes me want to go back when it warms up a bit!  I love the idea of painting on rocks.

I found a good place to display it.

Border collie and stone

It fit perfectly leaning against the Border Collie that sits on the dining room window sill.

Train book

Far Guy got a book all about trains.

What fun to get stuff in the mail.  Thank you Larry!  It is wonderful to have such talented generous blog friends!

Snowy Roads

We escaped again, to run an errand and to go to the Post Office. Yes it is a big deal to get out especially if you are a Border Collie who is used to going for a ride everyday.  We missed a day..so somedogs sorts were out.

Scenic Minnesota

There is a road that we take sometimes to make a huge circle around the lake to come back home again.  Looks like something froze over.

Tall snowbanks

When the snow blows off of a field unchecked by snow fence it makes huge snow banks.  Up ahead is a one lane corner.

Snow with texture

When you are messing around with settings on your camera and get a bad photo you can take it into Photoshop and give it some texture.  It was fun to learn something new.  Thanks to Sherry for the tutorial!

I guess we have to rename this road.  It used to be Joe and Vi’s Road now it is Ashley’s Road.  Some day her horses will be out when we drive by.

Ashleys Road

So that’s it from Minnesota.  It is still snowy and it is still cold.

We are trying to keep busy with projects.  Far Guy is doing some woodcarving and I am sorting through “stuff ” and trying some new settings on my camera and horsing around in Photoshop.  We are warm and comfy and we are thankful for heat and electricity which is better than some people out on the east coast.  I have a longtime blog friend who lives in Pennsylvania…he is without heat or electricity.  It seems like this winter’s weather is all out of whack.

Four Years

One day back in 2007 I woke up and said..gosh I think I will write a blog.  Perhaps I will voice some of my opinions and tell some stories about how things used to be when I was a little girl.  Perhaps “The Five” will find it interesting and amusing someday to learn something about their Grandmother…then again maybe not..you never know.

I had been reading Buffalo Gal’s Blog for a couple of years..she was and is awesome with all of her stories!   She and I became fast friends.  I value her opinion and her friendship.

Today is post number 1,468.  I have not missed many days in four years. Daughter Jen guest blogged one time when I was hospitalized with pneumonia.  Chance guest blogs from time to time so I do get a break.

One thing I worry about is repeating myself..have I shown an old photo before on Wistful Wednesday?  If I repeat myself I hope my readers will just go with the flow, and chalk it up to getting older.  I thought about compiling an index..I decided it would be too much work.

Last summer when I was working at the museum I began to write in my mind and then spit them out into the computer late at night.  It seems to have worked.  I have discovered my best writing time is when the house is quiet and the phone is not ringing.  Blogging is a hobby.. a fun hobby.  Most of my blogs are written the night before and published in the early morning.

I also write Forgotten Old Photos.  A blog where old photos found in antique shops are sometimes reunited with family.  That blog brings me great personal satisfaction.  I also get to feed the old photo collection monster that dwells inside me.

Blogging would be a perfect job!  This winter I am being paid to continue writing the Hubbard County Historical Museums blog.

My personal photo blog Far Side of Fifty Photos began to suffer last summer..it was hard to keep up..photography is still one of my passions..and Chance is sometimes a willing subject!

How long will I be blogging for..I have no idea..I take it all one day at a time. God willing and the crick don’t rise I will be back tomorrow.

I have “met” some marvelous bloggers over the past four years. Some I have actually met in real life..some are neighbors!  I thank each and every one of my readers, especially those who leave comments!

Now for a pretty picture. I once had a blogging friend who said “No post is complete without a pretty picture.”  Heaven has been her home for two years now.  Yes, even in the blogging world there is death and feelings of great loss when we lose one of our own.  I cannot explain it..it just is.

Book Review: News To Me by Laurie Hertzel

News to Me, Adventures of an Accidental Journalist by Laurie Hertzel was an interesting read. I enjoyed reading it, just as I enjoy reading Laurie's blog Three Dog Blog. I wondered how her book would be.

Through Laurie's journey readers learn about journalism and newspapers from the ground up. She starts as a clerk, advances to a librarian who lets her filing pile up, to copy editor to traveling reporter. This book is just one small slice of Laurie's life. Her love for words and truthful human interest stories is showcased in this book. There are spots of humor and spots where I cheered her on..in Leningrad.."YES Laurie be Russian..push those people out of the way..you need your ticket to Finland!!" In News to Me her visa was about to expire, she was in Leningrad at a tourist office, here is the excerpt. " Finally, the window slid open again, and the waiting travelers surged forward. There was no orderly line, just chaos, everyone shoving everyone else, trying to get to the front. The crowd smelled of sweat and cigarettes. I decided that the only way I was going to succeed was to become Russian. I pushed and shoved and elbowed my way to the window. I didn't care who I knocked over. I needed to get out of the country! Panting and disheveled, I suddenly found myself at the window, the clerk staring at me impassively." You go girl!

The book shows us her love for the city of Duluth and Lake Superior. She may even gloss over the horribly cold Minnesota winter weather a tad because of her love for the area. While reading her book I was sad to see her leave Duluth and go to "the cities." It was a bittersweet coming of age.

I was a bit disappointed that the husband became an X at the same time we found out about him. He received far less attention than her dog Toby. I wished she had talked more of the love of her life a Border Collie named Toby, who by the way is pictured on the back cover! But the book isn't a story about an X or about a beloved dog, it is about a young lady finding her way in a predominately male profession of journalism.

Laurie holds her reader at arms length in this book, not too close and not too far away; it is almost a shy tentative hold similar to her first appearance in the newsroom. I would have liked to have read more about the total Laurie, with more about Doug, Toby and her very large family. Perhaps in her next book!

I do recommend this book, it was a good read:)

Q and A with Laurie Hertzel

Q What made you write your book?

Newspapers are changing so quickly---the other day, a woman interviewed me, and she didn't take any notes in a notebook, but recorded our interview on her iPhone! I wanted to help preserve a record of the old days, when we used typewriters and scanner paper and the news came in on the news wires, not on computers.
I'd been reading a blog called "The Other Side of Paris," written by a guy who was a long-time journalist in the United Kingdom. On his blog, he told great stories about the old days as a sub-editor (what we in the States call a copy editor) on various newspapers around England, and his blog prompted me to start writing my own stories.
As you know, this book started as a series of blog posts. The book was sort of an accident.

Q. Will you write another book? What will the subject be?

A.  I think I will write another book.  I don’t yet know what it will be, but it will be nonfiction, and it will probably be based in Duluth.  Beyond that, I'm not sure.

Q. I identified with your desire to have a degree in journalism. How hard was it for you to just say to heck with it? You said in the book " I 'm done. I felt equal parts anger and relief." Do you feel less anger and more relief as time has gone by?

A.  That's a great question.  I no longer feel any anger, and I don't really feel relief, either.  Mostly I feel regret.  It was foolish of me to let life sweep me up and take me so far from a formal education.  I learned a lot along the way and I've done OK, but I think a college education helps make a person a better thinker, and I still sometimes look at it as unfinished business.  I'm 53 years old. Maybe I'll still go back some day.

Q. It is a good thing you missed filing your story every night while in Petrozavodsk, at 150 dollars per phone call, you would have been detained goodness knows how long..does that thought scare you today?

A.  I am less intimidated by that first trip than I am by the second.  Good Lord, in 1991 I went to Finland and the Soviet Union all by myself, speaking neither language, unable to communicate in any way. No cell phones, no computers, no email, nothing--just a good heart and a lot of luck.  I do not think I would do such a thing again. I'm a little amazed that I did it at all.

Q. I am sure you will be asked a thousand times what was your favorite story..so I will ask what was your least favorite story to cover?

A. The wonderful thing about journalism is this: You are forced to pay attention to things you would never pay attention to otherwise; you're forced to understand things that you do not naturally find interesting.  Once I immerse myself in a topic, I grow to like it.   So there weren't really any stories that I didn't like, once I began the assignment.
I do remember, though, one time working on a story about trees and paper-making and Blandin and the different kinds of paper and how fast various trees grow.... I no longer remember what the focus of the story was, but what I do remember is this:  Going up to the IRRRB and meeting with a scientist who told me all about poplar trees, and forest regeneration, and super-calendared paper, and all kinds of stuff, and writing a lot on a chalkboard, and then, at the end of an hour or two, handing me a big stack of reading materials--lectures, and books, and studies.  And he said, "This was the preliminary interview. Go back to the office and read all of this material, and then we'll do the *real* interview."
And I thanked him and drove back to the office and wrote my story and waited a few days and then mailed him back all of his books.  I'm not sure how much time he thought I had to work on this story, but we were a daily paper and that was all the time I had.

Thanks Laurie for allowing me to review your book..hopefully I will see you in Duluth on September 16, 2010 for the book signing there:)

Sparkling Snow

Some mornings the snow sparkles in the sunshine like a thousand wayward diamonds. I look out and say "Isn't it pretty..but cold..a pretty sparkly cold." I know it is all about light and refraction off of the snowflakes..all that technical crap. Simple snowflakes sparkling in my yard..I tried my best to capture them so you could enjoy them too.

Other sparkly things..people that brighten up my day. Chad Carpenter at Tundra Comics..he is a "keeper" I love his humor and he never fails to make me smile. Many of his comics have a northern flair..he heralds from the great state of Alaska.

I have decided that perhaps I have been lax at sharing some of the bloggers I have found that I really enjoy. Some for their humor, some for their beautiful photographs..some just because they are cool sparkly people. All of my sparkly blogging friends can be found on my side bar. You all are great..somday soon I may write about you..so stay tuned!
Today I will tell you a bit about three of them...

Lady Fi at On A Quirky Quest..she is quirky, can't cook..my kind of gal..oh ya she lives in Sweden.

Flydragon at A little bit of this, a little of that... she doesn't post everyday..but when she does..it is a hoot. I have been waiting two months just to see if she will ever get her car rescued from the snowbank! I think she may have a tad bit of cabin fever..she is from Ohio..Ohio..Ohio (think the Drew Carey Show)

Jen at Muddy Boot Dreams... blooming photography at it's finest! She is a Canadian! A!!

Recently I was a winner over at Susan's at City Gal Moves To Oz Land ..wanna see the loot?
The mailman delivered this yesterday! Notecards, Postcards, a Fridge Magnet, Swankie Hankies and Creme Caramel Tea! Thank you Susan..you made my day! :)
