Wistful Wednesday: Berry Pickers

Back in 2003 the Grand Girls and their parents would come to visit Minnesota from Nebraska.  One of their favorite summer activities was to pick raspberries with their Grandfather.  I have a photo “someplace” of them all …but couldn’t find it. No doubt I put it away someplace safe and sound…just cannot find it.

But I did find the girls picking berries.  I would give them cups and off they would go.

Paige and Maddie Picking berries

Paige and Maddie

They would pick and eat and share.  Paige was quite concerned about bears.  I stood out on the driveway and shouted at the bears to pack their bags get out of the woods and move to Hawaii.  Years later Paige remembered that and began to cry when she heard her parents were going to Hawaii…of course that is where all the bears were.  Grandma sent them there.

The wild raspberries are ripening now, Far Guy brought me one last night…I had saved two for him…I need to pick some everyday.   They bring back sweet memories.  If the berries are hanging low on the branches Chance will help himself.

  4. Berries warm from sunshine are the tastiest!

Paige came to the logical conclusion about the bears and her parents' trip to Hawaii. I'll admit, I did chuckle though.

  7. The girls are so cute! It's sad how fast the years go. Wish I could have all my grandchildren back young again. Once they grew up all the fun went out of the holidays. How funny that you sent all the bears to Hawaii.

  9. Our raspberries are just starting too. It would be nice to get enough to make some jam.

  10. Yes fond memories there. Our first dog Max went with me and the boys picking "black caps (wild raspberries") and ate his share while we filled ice cream buckets. There were only about five houses on our rural gravel
circle drive and the edge was full of them. Now with thirty some houses and a blacktop road we're more like suburbia. No woods and no raspberry bushes left...:(

  11. No wonder there are no bears in Iowa! ( My wife laughed at the part of the parents going to "bear country") Black berries are out in full swing here. Last year we missed them with a bout of Poison Ivy. This year, we are having better luck. ( so far) I was a huge berry picker when I was a kid.... it seems I still have not grown out of it.

  12. The Micro manager loves picking any kind of fruit. I hate it. Our kids are not berry pickers but I think you did the right thing for your grand kids.

  13. Everybody loves ripe raspberries! I was picking some and the deer came over to the fence, on their side of course, and snarfed down every one they could reach. Love the story about the Hawaiian bears. :-)
