Change

A section of land just west of us has been Native Prairie and a wooded area with many Oak trees as long as I can recall ( that would be about 70 years).

The land is being cleared.  What a change.

From our home we could hear the high pitched whine of the huge saw machine as the old Oaks fell one by one.  The Oaks were thick as hair on a dogs back.

So it will be a field  and grow something...potatoes, corn or a small grain of some kind.   I suppose some of the deer will return to have a salad...we often saw deer in this field...belly deep in Native Prairie grasses and flowers.  Most likely the pair of Fox we saw one evening have been displaced as have the coyotes.

Is it progress?  I suppose eventually it will feed a few more people.

To me it is always sad to see native prairie land disappear. There is so little left. Yet , we do need to feed all the people. Have a great weekend.

I always feel sad when I hear of trees being felled for progress. :-(

Oh, that's so sad. I always worry about the displaced animals.

No, not progress.

That is such a shame to lose the oaks and native grasses. And I feel for the animals that have been displaced. Hopefully they don't have to move far.

UGH! What a shame! It's probably going to be a new subdivision filled with McMansions on half-acre lots. I'd rather have fox & coyotes as my neighbors! They always manage to do this when all the young are in the nests. Humans suck! ~Andrea xoxo

It's sad to see the old trees come down. We have almost NO native prairie in this part of SD anymore. But it has been good to see some new tree belts being planted in the last decade.

Right now it will make somebody some money.

How sad to see the old Oaks cut down and the land cleared. Native prairie gone forever.

Well, that makes me sad too, but at least it isn't going to houses and warehouses, like happens here.

Things like this are sad to me. It's not progress for those animals.

This makes me so sad.

I hope they at least used the Oak wood for something. Furniture or lumber or Ink or Charcoal... anything. It would be a waste to mulch it up. I personally think you should plant a new tree every time you cut one down. The lock carbon and provide new life and O2 for everyone. After 80 years, you can repeat the process and get a little lumber for it.

Not progress to me!

I guess it is progress, but I like the idea that they will be providing the deer with some salad to enjoy :)

I found this news heartbreaking. I can only think of lost habitat for the wildlife.😢

So sad to lose all those trees. It will be interesting to see what they do with the land now that it's cleared. We live in farm country and trees are constantly being cleared. I guess we need the food too though. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

I hate to see oak trees cleared. They are such great trees that take so long to grow.

So sad! There are few native prairies left. There is one near my hometown that the U of Chicago comes out and studies every summer and it "preserved" from development of any kind. I am grateful to those who preserve these areas.

I too hate to see oaks cleared like that. Shame that it is going to cropland but I suppose we must need crops too.
