Christmas Ornament 2018

It is time to reveal the ornament that we woodcarved for 2018.  We had no idea what we were going to carve, a fellow carver (Sheila) and her sister came up with an idea and I expanded on it.

The blocks of wood were cut and Far Guy used the wood lathe to round out some of the parts…it saved some hand carving.

Then they were hand carved, top and the bottom part with the face and the scarf. Far Guy drilled a small hole in the top and we attached an eye hook…it gives you something to hold onto and it will hang on my fancy smancy wood carving holder ( A piece of wood with nails that is screwed to the top of a large peanut butter jar. ) I tried to paint ten at a time.

with gesso Gesso was applied

painting plaids

I learned how to paint plaid on the Internet. FYI painting plaids will eventually drive you almost nuts.

Faces and snow and trees

finished ornaments

Then I lightly sanded the whole thing…put a dark wash over the whole thing and washed most of it off.  Then they dried for a few days…noses came next…they are toothpicks painted orange.  The entire ornament was sealed and names were added.  Glitter was added to the tops of the trees and satin like embroidery floss attached to the eye hooks.

names on the back

Chance has two snowmen ornaments this year…his was the first carving I finished before I learned how to paint proper plaids.  I made him another.

It was a time consuming project with so many steps to its creation.

Now for some winners!  Congratulations!  I enjoyed all your answers and drew some names.

Marilyn in Massachusetts sends out about 9 cards.

Pauline Pershing in Ohio sends 65+ cards

Val Ewing in Wisconsin sends 20-30 cards.

Linda Reeder in Washington sends 70 cards.

I have Marilyn’s address.  Pauline , Val and Linda contact me by email please. captainconnie2001atyahoodotcom so I can get your ornaments ready to mail! I will mail on Wednesday or Thursday.

Oh my goodness! Wow! I will send you that email!
When I do some of my wood...painting I sometimes use that dark wash look too. I also learned how to 'crack' paint rather easily. This year was my first year at using Mod Podge on blocks too...I guess I'll have to show you what I did. Not as beautiful as this though!

I was beyond patient waiting for you to reveal the design. They are so great to see. I really like the plaid. I would have to study plaid to paint it. You have to feel good that all of that is done and the results turned out great for the two of you. You inspire me to start painting again.

This year's ornaments are wonderful ( as usual) but oh, the painstaking painting! How many hours you must have spent.

Cute ornaments!! Nice job! I can imagine having a sort of assembly line set up would make things go a bit faster. You painting the plaids made me think of when I painted a Union Jack on a cedar chest lid. I should have googled the instructions because I did it in the wrong order somewhere in the process, and had to do some sanding off ;-) The shape makes me think of a fish bonker, lol, although maybe one for a goldfish, as I can't really tell what size they are. Congrats to the winners!

Love your ornaments, always original. That's a lot of plaid to paint, especially in a small area. I think it's perfect that Chance gets two ornaments. Congratulations to all the winners.
