Mom…a bear

Sometimes our Grandson Adam’s voice is monotone.  Thursday morning is when we heard Mom …a bear, Mom…a bear.

We three adults looked up, in an instant I knew it was not Odda. It could be viewed out our living room window…sauntering by.  Indeed it was a full grown  bear.  We all shouted together “BEAR” then maybe a few bad words…    “Where is Chance? “ (In the house with us…thank goodness) “Get your camera” “Which way did he go?”

I won’t lie, the first time I went outside, I told Adam, we have to watch all directions…just like being on patrol in the army.  I was alert…and just a tad scared.  We alerted the neighbors and drove around to see if we could find the bear tracks or any sign of him…he appears to be gone…maybe.

Adam and Jen are here with us this week, Adam is taking Drivers Education Classes.

My bear sightings in Minnesota.

#1 At an Auction Sale in early spring…it was hungry and they were frying hamburgers, late 1980’s.
#2 Running across our driveway at the resort late 1980’s.
#3  August 17, 2014  JoLynn and I saw one in a tree along Hwy 113.

#4  June 18, 2015  The Boot Lake Bear
June 19 2015 Bear
#5 June 9, 2016  In our yard.
Nope no photo…but I have a photo etched in my brain…I wish you could see it.

Adam says "Yes that was the first bear I have seen in the wild in Minnesota and it looked me right in the eye."

The DNR says the best way to avoid bears is not to attract them.

Our garbage is inside containers inside the garage…but there are the bird feeders outside.

I hope he's gone, too. I know you'll be keeping an eye out for him. That's scary all right!

Just last night just after we arrived at the cottage and were standing outside watching for the ISS to fly over, our neighbor came over to tell us they had seen a black bear two nights ago, run up our driveway into the woods! I'll be keeping a close eye out for that. And our garbage can is in the garage also. Funny coincidence on our bear stories.

Love your statement "the best way to avoid bears is not to attract them."

So one sighting a year (so far) the past three years! That's getting to be pretty regular. Too regular!

Bears in the Grand Rapids area were few but once in a while they would be in the woods next to Lake Pokegama. Taking a walk on the road that meandered into the area where we lived one cold see one running and hiding back into the woods. I am sure now that the whole are around the lake is built in and that the bears have gone south to your area. That is a good sizee, clean fur bear.

No black bears here but I've run into several over the years canoeing in the BWCA...:)

I would feel like you did. We have only seen one bear while living here, but evidence of others. We have seen many while travelling in BC though. I used to have nightmares about bears, after my first experience with them as a child. That experience was camping, in a tent, and the bear circling the tent, my dad there with axe in hand. The bear was too used to people and the food that came along with them.

It's always so exciting to see a bear! We have a sow and her cub who is moving along between farms this spring. Why she is here we don't know, there is lots of feed in the canyon and up on the Plateau. It's not a drought year; no matter the reason we have a bear.

Although, I have not seen her.

It pays to be vigilant in Bear Country! I hope he has moved on to the deep woods.

What human with a brain would do anything to "attract" a bear?

Bears cetainly make me uneasy. I think we'll see more bears as they learn that there's lots of food around humans.

That would be scary. No bears in our part of Ohio. There are a few in the eastern part. They are spreading in from Pennsylvania.

Wow, how exciting! It's nice your grandson was there to see it. He will have a bear story to tell his friends when he returns home.
