Busy as a bee at the museum

I checked the front lawn of the museum last Saturday.  It is a complicated arrangement. The County has the Parks Department come in and mow the lawn.  I requested that it be mowed prior to our event last Monday night.

Wasps

I found these bees..I really wasn’t looking for them..just looking over the area for hazards before a whole bunch of elderly people set up their lawn chairs.  I had my camera..when do I not have my camera?

I called the head custodian for the county courthouse..I bet he hates it when I call.  I left a message and asked that they spray the key hole opening.  Of course on Monday when they got my message the bees were not visible.

No one was stung that I am aware of.

Last week the custodians washed the front window for me…they are ever so kind sometimes.  See where it says WELCOME..that is the part that they washed.

I know it had not been washed in over a year..maybe two.  They reported back to me that the window was “filthy”..I said “Yes, I know and I appreciate your help with washing it!”

When I called over there..I asked “Hey! Do you have one of those window washing squeegees on a long pole?  The big window out front needs a wash!”  They didn’t know if they had anything like that.  I said “Well, if you happen to have a guy with a ladder and some window wash that isn’t busy..send him over someday!”

I am sure they must cringe when I call…because I only call when I have a problem.  There are three guys on the day shift.  They walk back and forth..forth and back from the County Courthouse to the Law Enforcement Center.  The County still owns the building that the Historical Museum occupies..therefore they have to answer my phone calls…and I have been known to run out of the building to catch one of them on their many walks forth and back every day.

The painting of the ceiling, walls and floors is coming along quite nicely in the basement. I have three wonderful volunteers that are doing a great job.  The two rooms that we ripped apart should be going back together soon.  It seems like those rooms have been torn apart longer than a month..it will be wonderful to have them all clean and ready for the public:)

Wow, you are a shaker and a mover, ignore the attitudes, just get 'er done!! Hope all goes well with the concert. It should be lovely!! I haven't been to a band concert in years...... Thanks for the idea, I will check the local paper to see if we have any concerts going on in the area.

Yeah, they might cringe just a bit - but I'm thinking they realize that it's only when something really needs doing. And you are getting things done! That's gotta feel good!

You are amazing. I am sure the community is glad for all the improvements.

Thank you for helping preserve history.

Yes, I agree with the previous comments. You are a mover and shaker, and they didn't know what a gem they got when they hired you. Pity the poor person who follows in your footsteps. A lot will be expected, you have set the bar very high! :-)

I was delighted to see a picture of your museum. It is a lovely building.

If it's part of their job, they need to lose the attitude. After all, the building is a reflection of the community, and it's it important to leave visitors with a good impression.

I agree with DJan that you have set the bar very high for future museum directors. Keep up the great work!

I giggled as I read this, imagining them cringing when you come out the door. Perhaps some cookies or muffins as a thank you....

I, too, am a museum director housed in and oooollllld building (1903 Carnegie Library). We are not county-owned, so our maintenance guys are mainly volunteer (with paid service companies as needed). I try to "sweeten up" my volunteers with the occasional baked good or dozen box of farm fresh eggs. Seems to keep them coming through my door, even though I always have work for them, ha! (Really, it is their dedication to the museum, but hey, they're guys, so food doesn't hurt! :-)

Holy Canoli! That's a big Museum/building! I guess I was thinking of something much smaller. No wonder you work so hard to keep up with it all! So glad the paintings getting done. It's great that those guys have to walk by the museum. Maybe in your collection you have one of those hooks they used to use in Vaudeville to grab someone off the stage? LOL! You could use that when they walk by.
