My Pheasant and Furs

This was gifted to me by a woodcarver who is also a taxidermist.  He was going to toss this old mount out.  It is a perfect addition to my office.

My Pheasant

There are so many thing inside the museum that children cannot/are not supposed to touch.  An open invitation to touch something always brings about a smile.

This old pheasant is kinda ugly..but I appreciate having something  just for kids.

Our new President wrote a grant for paint.  My beautiful blue office may be eggshell after a coast of primer and a few coats of paint sometime this summer.

I have a collection of furs just for children to touch.Muff and Furs

That big black round thing is a muff, the little girls like to see how girls long ago kept their hands warm.  A muff was on my wish list..and when I made a public plea for one that children could touch..one appeared the next day in a bag of odds and ends that was hidden in the Clerk Office.  JoLynn donated trim from an old coat of her relatives..buffalo I think.  I found some mink at a flea market and a seal.  We also have a bit of a wolf hide that was a cuff on a coat, a piece of beaver and a white tail deer tail..oh and a Partridge Fan.  I keep these valuable furs on a shelf at little kid height in my office.

I sent Far Guy in to work for me yesterday..I awoke with no voice.  Chance and I had several long healing naps and homemade soup for lunch..I am sure I will be all better soon.  One more day and I have two off! :)

So many museums these days have exhibits you can touch - much better than the sterile, cold places of my youth. I was even in the Walker Gallery in Liverpool the other day where they had sculpture you could sit on.

How much fun a bunch of furs would be to play with! You are just the right person for this job, Connie. Hope you're feeling better soon, but it's kind of nice to sit around with Chance, I'm thinking.

What a great idea having furs of various kinds for children to touch. I would be touching them myself! What a wonderful way to learn about various animals. You have some very creative ideas to make this Museum interesting.

Hope you're feeling better!

(I'm afraid I don't like furs or stuffed animals...)

I volunteer at a Nature Center and you're so right that kids like something to pet. We have an old owl that gets some wear. We also have a neighboring institution that has a live owl that can be petted. Otis is blind.

So sorry you aren't feeling well. Take care of yourself and keep resting!!
I bet the kids love to feel the furs. ;)

Sorry about your throat. Mine is sore because of allergies, so I'm taking Allegra and hoping for the best. I love that Far Guy can cover for you at work. And the furs are a great idea for kids. We spent a long time handling some at a nature center (they had color photos nearby for reference). I decided I liked the coyote best.

Love the mount and the idea of furs for the kids to touch. Sorry to hear you feel so bad but I hope the rest and Chance's hugs will make you better soon. Happy Mother's Day.

Our local historical society/museum at one time had a program called Grandma's Trunk, in which a docent acted out the part while bringing out various items of clothing and household goods from an old trunk and explaining about their place in life so many years ago. It was popular because of the very reason you're talking about: touchable stuff for kids.

Get Well soon. Glad Far Guy could work for you. I too like touchable stuff. Ann

It's so neat that you have things for the kids to touch. They will love that! How interesting to have buffalo hide from long ago and all the other furs. Eggshell will be nice....I saw the blue! Hope you feel better! I was down yesterday...must have gotten pollen in my eyes or something...I rubbed and teared all day. I finally just had to shut them.
