What is it?

What is this container?  What is your best guess?

It was at the Fair.  I like seeing what the 4-H kids come up with for projects.

It is quite large.  I see it got a Reserve Champion ribbon.

Well it is a Fire Pit.

See the birch logs inside and a string of Christmas lights for an effect!  It is made from a dryer drum from inside a clothes dryer. I learned that cloths dryer and washing machine drums can be used to make a fire pit.  Commercial washer drums are in high demand for this project.

Who knew?

Guess What Ornament?

Time for a bit of fun.  Thanksgiving is over.  I will have a Thanksgiving report soon…maybe tomorrow.

If you would like to be entered into the 2014 Ornament Giveaway then take a guess at what we carved.

Here are the hints.

The ornament has six pieces.  They are carved from Yellow Popple…my new favorite carving wood and a popsicle stick. The six pieces are glued and pinned together to form the ornament.

Part of the ornament

Ornament bits and pieces

One part is green.

Guess away…that is all the hints for now.

If you want to be included in the giveaway then leave me a comment with your guess or for those of you who are shy shoot me an email. My email address can be found in my profile.

I have two ornaments all set to be mailed out.  I will draw two lucky winners on Wednesday December 3rd  at 9PM so you have till then to comment with your best guess!

SnoBear

Have you ever seen a SnoBear?

I had not.  So when I saw one in a parking lot, I naturally had to get a photo.  I wondered what does a SnoBear do anyways?

I wondered if it was some kind of snow machine that gave elderly citizens  a chance to get out on the trails.  It was heated or appeared to be.  I wondered how many people could have a ride at once.

Snobear

My wondering was interrupted by the owner, he said “I bet you have never seen one like this before?”   No I had not.  I made my guess and he laughed.  Turns out he is from the little village of Eagle Bend and purchased this vehicle second hand.  He asked if I would like to see inside?  Well of course I would!  He was a very nice gentleman, either that or he was used to old lady gawkers with cameras.

Peek inside a snobear

It is a fish house, he had been fishing over on Leech Lake.  This vehicle/fancy fish house is on a track and it can raise and lower itself by 14 inches.  Some models have bunks, so you can catch a nap or fish all night!  I didn’t see bunks in this one, it had two captains chairs.

Off to a new fishing spot

He was off to a new fishing spot!

Minnesota’s winters are way too long for many people.

Found: FBC

I found my FBC.  Do you have one?

IMG_9269

In the olden days you might have used it.  It might have been on your table and never moved off until it had to be washed and refilled.

Give up?  Need  a different view?

A French Butter Chest dates back to the 18th Century.   It was a way to keep your butter from becoming rancid.  The inner cup holds 1/4 pound of butter.   You put enough water in the larger outer cup so that it is 3/4 full.  Invert the butter filled inner cup into the water filled outer cup.  The unglazed inner cup will hold the butter in place whilst upside down.  You add more water as the butter is used..and change the water weekly.  A marvelous way to store butter before refrigeration!

My French Butter Chest was a gift from my Baby brother and his wife a long time ago..they must have been thinking of me and how I like quirky gifts.

I found this in the back of a cupboard yesterday..I can report that all the cupboards have been rooted out and everything inside washed and disinfected.  I must wash the exterior of the last bank of cabinets..and then I am done.  The end is in sight! :)

Museum Mystery Item

Every now and again I run into something at the museum that I have no idea what in the world it is.

The only clues I have to go on are:

This was found in the medical room. (which may or may not be a clue..as I found lots of “stuff” in there)

It is roughly the same size as a rolling pin.

It has the word Leningrad hand carved into one of the handles.

It has no museum identifying marks of any kind.

It has no manufacturing marks of any kind.

It sits up on the dark colored circular thingys quite a bit..I can think of no food that could be rolled with it.  It would have to be fat fluffy food if it is a rolling pin of some sort.

Mystery Item

What do you think?  I spent some time on the Internet trying to find something that looked similar..with no luck.  My readers are very smart..I am sure someone knows what it is and what it does.

The medical room is a work in progress, it is coming along. Mark and my Mother and I have removed lots of dust.

Today I entered the museum into a new Federally State Funded Program. It is called RSVP which stands for Retired Senior Volunteer Program.  You have to be 55 years old to qualify.  If you volunteer for at least two hours you can be reimbursed 18 cents a mile ( maximum per month 20 dollars) for your travel and you are covered by a small insurance policy while you are volunteering and you get a free dinner.  Not much but at least it is something!  They will send people my way and I can sign up any of my regular volunteers.  I have several that will qualify and several that are just not old enough:)

Back to July

It is still raining this morning..Chance got all wet.  So I am going to transport you through pictures to a greener time..last July.  It is going to be a guessing game with the answer revealed tomorrow..so pay attention.   Relatives and close friends that know the answer are not allowed to guess. If you are a friend or relative that doesn't pay attention to anything that I say... then go ahead and guess.
What in the world were we preparing for?

Look at that green, yes I know some of the greens are weeds!  Seems like a good spot.  We used to have a small shady perennial greenhouse there.   July 21, 2009

July 22, 2009  My brother, Jody.  I was amazed at how much black dirt he had to remove..

Still July 22, 2009.  Chance has been supervising the crew!  Ryan, Hunter ( my neices husband),  Jody and Josh (nephew).

All done, now if the dog and the deer stay out of it until it cures!

Delivery Day,  July 26, 2009  Miney (The dog) Jen ( daughter)  and Andy (son in law).  They put it on a trailer at their house and moved it to our house.  We should have charged admission..we had a whole crowd of people watching!

Easy does it!  Andy, Hunter and Jody.  Did you know that you have to have a building permit, even though you aren't technically building something..you are just moving something.

August 1, 2009.  When do you suppose we will get electricity hooked up?  Do you think it should be painted green?  How about a steel roof with an overhang?  It definately needs a bench.  Someplace to sit and relax.

October 13, 2009  Perhaps this wasn't such a good idea, it is cold and rainy..one last fall project that shouldn't have been started.  BUT..the overhang will keep the snow away from the door.

October 24, 2009   Finally the roof is done, and the front door has two coats of paint.  The posts and that front trim board are going to have to weather gracefully..it is too cold to prime and paint them.   Done,  it is done.  See the frost on the ground?

Do you need more hints?  Alrighty then...we use it several times a week..Chance does not use it at all.  He waits patiently outside for us to finish.  HA!  Guess away! :)
