Progress on the big sort

I am done bringing totes into the house to sort.  The last two totes came home with me today.   I am not going back to my Mothers's storage garage to get anything else.  Far Guy says "ya sure."  He also asked how long I thought the big sort will take.   I do not know.  I am done sorting new cards ...I think...there are hundreds of them.  I started working on the photographs.

My Mom and her older brother Alfred who was killed in a car accident when he was 19 years old in October of 1947. His death made my Mom the oldest in the family.

67 Years Together

My parents will celebrate their 67th Wedding Anniversary today.

Mom and Dads Anniversary

I made this card for them a number of years ago.  The photo of the church they were married in is the background photo.

They had a candlelight ceremony at 7:30 in the evening.  Dad was soon to be 24 years old, Mom was almost 21.  Their birthdays and anniversary all happen within a week.

Since I am the oldest and most responsible I have been there for all 67 of their anniversaries.  I was born just 17 days before their 1st anniversary and Mom and I celebrated all by ourselves since Dad was in Korea.

A card I made for them this year. I took a photo last year on their anniversary and I will take another photo today.

Happy 67th Anniversary!

Happy Mother’s Day

If you have a mom, there is nowhere you are likely to go where a prayer has not already been. ~Robert Brault

Happy Mother’s Day to all the Moms, Mother In Laws and Aunties out there!

Madeline, Connie 1952

This is a photo of my Mom and I taken 60 years ago.

My Mom is still struggling with some pain from her fractured pelvis back in December.  However she is much better and she can walk without assistance, and she can finally sleep more than a couple hours at night.

Happy Mother’s Day Mom I wish you a year with no pain:)

Wistful Wednesday : 1930

In 1930 my Mother was one year old.  Photography was sometimes challenging.  The light isn’t right. The camera operator is shaky..

Madeline marked this Me 1930

My Mother has marked this photograph “Me.”  Now, I know who it is..but will my children or their children?  Probably not.

Madeline 1930 cropped from larger photo This is a photo of my Mother in 1930.  I cropped this out of another larger photo..it needs some restoration.  I will put it on my list of things to do.  I believe my Mom was not yet one year old in this photo.   There are only three photographs of her in 1930.  These are two of them.

Today is my Mothers birthday, we will meet for lunch in town at the place that serves the sour cream and raisin pie, then she is off on one of her many volunteer activities.  I suppose I could tell you that she was a few days short of being twenty one when she married my Father..sixty years ago:)

Wistful Wednesday : 1946

This photograph was taken at my Grandparents D farm. My Aunt M is on the left and my Mother on the right. My Mother was seventeen and my Aunt was fifteen. I absolutely love the dogs in the the photo, one looks like a relative of Chances. I asked my Mother about the dogs, she could not remember their names. She is holding something..it looks like a white baby kitten. My Mother thinks that the photograph was taken on Easter Sunday in 1946.

I am curious about the colors in the photo, I have several of these photos that have been colored. Does anyone know anything about this technique or what it was called? It has an interesting effect on the black and white photo:)

Wistful Wednesday: 1957

March 1957, My Mother, me, I was six years old, and my brother, he was three. My Mother obviously gave us some kind of treat, and we were delighted! She used to sew our clothing, I remember that checked shirt I was wearing, it was one of my favorites. It had a fancy trim on the front, and buttoned down the back. I recognize some things in the photograph, the enamel dish washing pans, the hot water bottle, the dish rack thingy. There is an old covered aluminum cake plate on the counter, and a tin of Mixo. Perhaps someone can enlighten me on the Mixo, was it a shortening?
Do we look like troublemakers? I was the leader, my brother was the follower. I had a VERY hard time following the old saying "Children should be seen and not heard." It was one of those things I just did not agree with, and still don't:)

Wistful Wednesday : 1955

This photograph was taken in 1955, My Mom and my brother and me! My Father took this photograph, I know this because I have another one just like it with him in it that my Mother took. My brother was about 18 months old, I was 4. We are on the front step of the house on the farm where I grew up.

Yes, my brother is wearing a scarf! He was very prone to ear infections and would not keep a cap with ear flappers on, so Mom would tie a scarf on his head to keep the wind out of his ears. Keeping the wind out of your ears stopped all earaches, or so we thought. He was a pretty cute little kid..even with a scarf on his head. I have no idea why he is wearing a skirt, maybe I dressed him myself..just like one big doll.

My Mother's hair is all pinned up in pin curls. Sometimes they were called "spit curls." ( You can take that however you like.) Real spit..or maybe just a little bit of water on dry hair. You got pin curls at night or all day on Saturday so you looked good for church on Sunday morning. Your hair would be damp and you had to sit still and get your hair wound up into little circles that were attached to your head by two bobby pins that formed an X to lock the curl in place until it was dry. Then you put on a head scarf to cover up all the pin curls. All the ladies from the country would go to town on Saturday morning with their scarfs on. I guess I didn't realise it back then..but most of them were going out on a Saturday night..hence the curls! :)

If anyone else would like to join in on Wistful Wednesday with their old photos please do! Stop by and leave me a comment and I will be sure to stop by and see your old photo too!
