Happy Father's Day

Although our Fathers are no longer with us.  We think of them and what kind men they were who helped raised us.

 Happy Father's Day!

Jen visited us yesterday to help me get caught up on some of the high dusting (the things I have to stand on a step ladder for)  AND to visit with her Dad and she took us out for supper!

Happy Father's Day!

Our Fathers are both gone now.   I was really lucky to have my Dad for 71 Father's Days. Not many people can say that.

Me, other baby brother, our Dad and baby brother.  Our sister was not born yet when this photo was taken in 1963.

Far Guy only got to have his Dad for 44 Father's Days.

Far Guy's Dad, his sister,  Far Guy's Mom and Far Guy in August of 1958.

Yes we could be sad because they are gone...instead I chose to be thankful for the years we had them in our lives.  Both wonderful Fathers who did the best they could.

Happy Father's Day!

Dementia

Memory loss, difficulty finding words, getting lost, unable to problem solve, unable to do two tasks at once.

My Dad has dementia, he has been struggling for a few years.   Sometimes his inability to find the right words has him revert back to the Finnish language.

Yesterday we visited Mom and Dad in their assisted living apartment.  Mom is not real happy being there she misses the house that they sold.  Dad is okay there...his recliner and  TV are in virtually the same spot as in their house.  The food is good since Mom still cooks.  Dad watches basically one program on Netflix  Heartland.   I like that show too and I can understand him liking it.   Dad used to listen to baseball games on the radio and on TV...but he can no longer follow the game.

Yesterday Dad knew that I was "the oldest kid" and he was happy to see me.  He asked me again "How old are you?"  I finally told him 70 and he said "That is really old"  He knew that he was 95.   Most of the time he does not know what year it is or the month.

He thanked me in Finn for the card and a bit of money for his billfold.  Kiitos.

My Dad is the last of his family...all of his brothers and sisters have died.  He is the lone survivor.  He is also a Bladder Cancer survivor since 1986.  It is hard for him being the only one left, he misses his sister Anna very much.

I  miss parts of my Dad;  the memories and remember whens, the one with advice and an opinion, the one who would take the opposite side of a discussion just to be on the other side. ( If he didn't take the opposite side I would)

My Dad who smiles when he sees me and always welcomes a hug is still there for that I am grateful.

Happy Father's Day!

I was out mowing and it rained on me, of course I am not sweet enough to melt.  My mower got a good wash as did my hat!   So we went to recycle instead.

The storm clouds that rained on me.  There was a huge temperature difference between where it rained and where it did not.

Veronica and Salvia are blooming in the wild gardens.

Happy Father's Day to all the Fathers out there, I hope your day is special!

Happy Father’s Day!

My Dad is 91 going on 92.  He still tends his tomato plants and mows his own lawn.  He works in his garage and likes to do woodworking projects.  He does dishes and helps my mother with house work. We go to Bingo together once a week.  In the winter my other baby brother goes along, it is nice to have company for the drive back home when it is cold and snowy.  When my baby brother is around he often joins us.  If other relatives are around on Bingo night then we will have a full table.

I always call to make sure Dad feels up to going and the answer is almost always “Yes.”  So I pick him up in plenty of time to get us settled at a table, get our cards bought and the special games marked.  He is the oldest Bingo player there.  He likes to sit at a table where he can easily see the monitors and the big board.  We have Bingo friends that will often save our table for us!

Dad and I play one wins we all win. We share all winnings if there are any.

Dad has played Bingo since he was about 14 years old and took cattle to the County Fair and stayed with them on the fairgrounds. Bingo was a nickel to play and you marked the card with corn kernels.  He would win Kewpie Dolls and give them away.

Far Guy’s Dad has been gone a long time…24 years now.  He died in 1994 when he was 80 years old.

He liked to play cards and put puzzles together in the winter.  Some of his favorite were Automobiles, Flannel Shirts, Cross Pens, Fried Potatoes, Angie Dickenson in Police Woman, All in the Family and Johnny Carson.  He liked to read the daily paper and always had a road atlas in the magazine rack next to his chair.   He was a fisherman and a hunter.  He adored his three granddaughters.  His favorite color in cars and couches was red.

Happy Father’s Day to all the Dad’s out there!

Happy Father’s Day!

My fathers 89th year has been a good one so far.  He is still walking and talking and knows who most people are.

Dad at the WW2 Memorial

This photo was taken by my other baby brother in May when they were in Washinton DC at the World War II Memorial.

This trip remains the highlight of my fathers 89th year….he is still talking about it.

His vegetable garden is growing.  He likes to garden, he takes his Cadillac (walker) out to the garden with him.

He loves to go to Bingo and most Thursday nights you can find him down at The American Legion playing Bingo.

Both Dad and Mom have been asked to be the Grand Marshall’s of The 4th of July Parade in town.  So that will be another fun day for them.

**************

Father’s Day wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Far Guy’s father who died in 1994, he was 80 years old when he died.  Alpha One Antitrypsin Deficiency most likely lead to his death and also the death of two of his brothers.  If we only knew then what we know now.

Happy Father’s Day!

My Dad will be 89 years old this Fall.  Right now he is still 88.  Most of his life he has been a heavy equipment operator.  He likes pushing dirt around.  My other baby brother also likes playing in the dirt.  He called me one day this spring and said “Dad is pushing some dirt today why don’t you come take some pictures.”

Happy Father’s Day!

Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers out there.  I hope you all have a special day!

Usually we go to the Fire Department Annual Father’s Day Picnic..and this year is no different.  Far Guy cooked up some Wild Rice Hot dish and he helped me bake two apple pies..from scratch..well almost I purchased the crusts…that is as close to a from scratch pie as I get.  Most of the food is donated for the picnic..and there will be every kind of pie imaginable. I have been noticing that many of the younger gals bring frozen pies..so I am trying to set a good example…either that or I am passing into old ladydom..and getting fussy about the pies I take.  I put lots of cinnamon in them too..no sense being scotch with the cinnamon in an apple pie.

Happy Fathers Day to my Dad! This photo was taken shortly after he got back from Korea and just before we moved to the farm.  This photo was taken in my Grandparent D’s yard.  That old garage in the background is the only old building that remains on their old farmstead.  My Mom and I stayed with my Grandparents all the while my Dad was in Korea. On account of me this is his 60th Father’s Day! :)

Fathers Day 2011

I give my Dad money for Bingo every year for Father’s Day.  Sometimes I go along with him to Bingo.  My Dad likes Bingo, he plays on Tuesday and Thursday nights. My Mother stays home and sews in her sewing room.

My Dad picks up Darrel for Bingo.  Darrel is legally blind.  Darrel has his own Bingo Cards with the little red windows that cover up the numbers that are also in Braille.  Darrel's fingers fly all over his bingo cards as he plays three cards at once..and pays just like everyone else.  Just think of the money he saves on bingo daubers.  Darrel and Dad enter the Eagles or the Legion with Darrel holding onto Dad arm. They walk slowly to their seats..I heard last week that SOMEONE was sitting in their seats.  Interlopers..that did not realize that Darrel and Dad like to sit in the same spot every week because that is the spot where they can hear the bingo caller call out the numbers the best.

I think perhaps they should have assigned seats!

Happy Father’s Day to my Dad:)

Happy Father's Day!

This is the card that I made for my Dad for Fathers Day, the photo was taken on June 06, 1953.  Dad was off to be the best man at his brothers wedding.  He took time for me and a photo by the picture tree.

"A man's children and his garden both reflect the amount of weeding done during the growing season". -- Unknown

My Father was gone every year from early spring to late fall, he was home only on weekends. The construction jobs he worked on were usually hours away.  I was a very difficult child, strong willed and opinionated, always challenging, always asking why and why not, always trying to find a way around the rules..there was much weeding for him to do on the weekends:)
