Wistful Wednesday: May Day Report

I have celebrated May Day since 1953….so that means that this is my 65th May Day.

May day 1954

This is a photo from May Day 1954 when I was 2 years and 8 months old.  My May Baskets are lined up on the snowy hood of my parents car.

The tradition as I know it:  You decorate baskets fill them with candy and you take them to neighbors and friends.  You go up to a door and hang the basket on the door knob, knock and then run, because someone will chase you and try to kiss you.  I am old, I will settle for a hug…because I am not running away.  Growing up we decorated small baskets to take to neighbor kids and elderly neighbors…it was something fun to do after a long winter.

So the tradition continues.  I made some deliveries and took some photos. My Great Nieces and Nephews

Anna and Mason

Mason and Anna…these two live next door and are growing like weeds!!

I still have three baskets for Teddy, Harlow and Vivian hopefully I will see them soon.

I stopped by my parents.

Mom and Dad May 1 2018

I stopped by a few other places…some favorite people I don’t see often enough.

After supper we delivered a few more baskets and some dog treats for Odda and Putz.

In my opinion May Day is a fun holiday…something as simple as a cute little basket with a bit of candy makes people young and old smile!

I hope you all had a wonderful May Day!  If you made a May Basket or got one perhaps you could share the story in a comment.

Soap Carving

Last summer the carving group taught a soap carving class for the libraries summer art and design program. ( Somehow I  am always the go to person.) Later in the summer I was asked to teach soap carving as part of the Community Education Program.  We taught the class last Tuesday at The Middle School.

I recruited three other carvers to help; Far Guy, Shiela and Dave. It was a fun time!  Several of the participants were our great nieces.

Olivia and Ava soap carving

Our safe carving tools are tooth picks to mark your pattern and small wooden spoons ( the ones that come with individual ice cream containers) shaped to a sharp point.  The simple tools work well with the soap and you would really have to work at cutting off a finger.  Ivory is the soap we use.  Yes it is messy…we covered the tables with wax paper!

Brookes soap carving

For the class everyone carved a flower step by step and then it was a free for all carving what ever they wanted.  We sent home extra bars of soap and wooden tools.

I think the children enjoyed themselves!  They learned a new skill and who knows…maybe someday a few will be woodcarvers.

I can carve soap….my hand allowed it…wood not so much.  I hope someday to be back to carving again.  For now I go along to carving and work on some other craft project…the guys always ask me “ how is your bum hand?”  The answer is not good enough to carve yet.  Some things just take time…luckily I have many other hobbies that I can do!

Good Eggs

I like farm fresh eggs.  Alway have probably always will. Especially brown eggs, they are my favorite.  I used to help with the chicken chores, I didn’t mind it.  I “gathered eggs” …Far Guy helped me once he “picked up eggs.”

Eggs

Last summer some of my great nieces got chickens.  They are really good chicken farmers…and hope to expand their coop and maybe even build a barn and get some goats and make their own soap.   I am not sure their parents know of this “plan.”

Brooke and Hailey

Two of the girls and one of their favorite chickens.  This may be Fern…or Olive or Ponderosa Pine or I forget…

Hailey and one of her chickens

This girl loves her chickens and her chickens love her.

All 16 of the chickens are very tame, they all have names.  They rub against your legs as you walk through their area.

Claire the fat chicken

This is Claire the biggest fattest largest chicken they have.  She also lays the largest eggs.

Some of them even lay double yolks.  I cannot eat eggs everyday, Far Guy eats eggs every other day.

Nothing better than fresh non grocery store eggs. The price was $2.30 a dozen but we always pay $2.50…young entrepreneurs should always be encouraged.  What is the going price for eggs in your area?  Have you met the chickens that lay your eggs?

Brooke

We have a new baby in our family, I have a new great-niece! Her name is Brooke, she has lots of blond hair..I finally got to see her and take some photographs. Tiny babies never cooperate, they always close their eyes or open their mouths just like little birds.

She is grandchild number eight for my brother and his wife. My brother holds a baby easily, often times when a small child is fussing he says "Give me that baby."

Brooke joins her two sisters, Hailey, the one who screamed every time she looked at me until she was about three years old. I have no idea why in the world I scared her half to death, the poor thing would scream bloody murder and shake in fear every time she saw me. She finally grew out of it. Everyone else in the family thought it was pretty funny..except for me and of course poor Hailey.

And Miss Olivia..photogenic little twerp. She was never afraid of me, at least not screaming afraid like her sister.

Brooke is way to little to begin screaming yet, only time will tell if she is afraid of me or not. So far she seems to be weathering all the hugs and kisses she gets from her sisters:)
