We remember those who died while fighting for our freedom.
My Dad's brother Arthur died on May 20, 1944 and is buried overseas in the Sicily Rome American Cemetery.I wonder when my Grandparents received the news...was it before or after Decoration Day in 1944?
My Grandmother is a Gold Star Mother. She had 12 sons and 2 daughters. Five of her sons would serve in the military...one died and two carried wounds for the rest of their lives.
We visited the cemetery where my grandmother is buried. Someone moved her Gold Star Mother marker over onto my grandfathers grave. Well you can bet I moved it right back when it belongs.
My Dad does still not have a Veteran's flag holder but someone left him a flag.
Far Side
I thank your Dad for his service and I thank your grandmother for her sacrifice.
ReplyDeleteI feel sick that those that gave their lives for our freedom are now watching those freedoms being destroyed by those that have never served and have no respect for our constitution.
ReplyDeleteMy parents and all my uncles served in WWII.....we are blessed by that generation and the sacrifices that they and their families made.
I am glad you moved the gold star back to your grandmother's grave. What a dear lady she must have been to have endured the heartache from the death of one son and the injuries of two others.
ReplyDeleteYour grandmother - - losing that many sons is heartbreaking almost beyond comprehension.
ReplyDeleteI watched the Memorial Day Special on PBS last night. It was an excellent remembrance of those whose service kept the freedoms and values we are blessed to have. In addition to the fantastic music, they had people telling snippets of biographies of the experiences of survivors who were in attendance. It was super patriotic and honoring!
Good for you, putting that gold star back where it belongs. My father was in the South Pacific during WWII.
ReplyDeleteWhy would someone chose to remove a flag from your grandmother's grave and move it? That is rude! I can imagine how quickly you returned it to it's rightful place.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if your uncle's war information would provide a copy of the correspondence sent to your grandparents? I have seen letters detailed information in the packages of information for soldiers here in Canada.
Thank you to your uncle who gave all for us and to the other two would bore the wounds they suffered for us too. Your grandmother must have been a very special person and I'm glad she has been honored. Your dad too. I have many in my immediate family who have served.
ReplyDeleteSo many people seem to have forgotten the sacrifices that have been made and want to throw away our freedoms. I pray they come to their senses.
Blessings,
Betsy
Thankful for their service to us all.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this with us.
ReplyDeleteWe honor the dead, the wounded and their families for their service. War is hell.
ReplyDeleteI bet the person mistook the gold star mother marker for a veterans marker. I supposed they could have just read it. I am so sorry for the loss of your brother in-law who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
ReplyDeleteGood for you. I don't know why people do things like that to graves. I've even seen people take flowers off other graves and put them on the graves they are visiting. Sad.
ReplyDeleteOh your poor grandmother. How she stood it i don't know. 12 sons! Her house must have been wild when they were growing up! I'm one of 13 siblings, 5 boys 8 girls, but not one of my brothers served. My Dad and 2 of his brothers did, youngest brother was too young. None of them were injured.
ReplyDeleteI had 5 sons so have nothing but praise for a lady who raised 12!
Thanks for stopping by my blog. I am enjoying reading yours!
