Happenings

My best friend Susie and her husband live North of us deeper in the woods than we are.   Her husband left on a Fishing Trip so we got together for lunch, conversation and a whole bunch of giggles.   We have children the same age and used to live across the road from each other back in 1975.   That is a 50 year friendship I am so lucky to have!  It was nice to get away for the afternoon...to enjoy the company of a like minded person!  We met at a place called Ice Cracking for lunch and a bit of slot machines!  No big winners but we still had fun!

The woods are coming to life in the warm weather.  The Pin Cherries made their presence known...usually the blooms are frozen so there are no berries...if there are berries they are tiny and although it makes great jelly it takes a lot of berries...and the birds need food too.

Late Thursday night we had a hungry visitor.

One of the Security Cameras caught him ripping down feeders and making a mess.

The feeders were repaired and several were taken in...only a few will remain and be placed in a bucket inside the house overnight.   Bear have awfully good memories and he/she will be back.  I believe this is just about the earliest we have seen a bear...although one night over a week ago he visited Baxter and Smudge's house and they gave him/her the what for!

It was a day. The high was 79 F or 27 C eh.  In the afternoon we had wildfire smoke come down from Canada...I hope they get a good amount of rain up there...we are dry here also.

I brought home a Bacon Double Thunderburger for Far Guy for supper...that and a salad was a perfect end to the day.   Far Guy's weight he lost is just not returning as we had hoped.  He had another conference with his dietician.  He will try to do more high calorie stuff...smoothies...dried fruit...he is supposed to eat 6 times a day...and sometimes he is just not hungry.

  1. It seems like it would be kind of exciting to live somewhere where there is an apex predator about. The only real predator we have here are coyotes and they are more scavengers than predator and very skittish about coming close to humans.

  2. Rich was on the same path but with Dexamethasone, he has an appetite like a toddler. [not suggesting that as a cure though]

I hope FG can find his appetite.

I was surprised to see most of Northern WI and your state under a drought situation. I hope the rains come and settle the dust and dryness.

  3. I wish I could give FG a few of the extra pounds that I don't need. Those bears are scary. We get the occasional mountain lion here, but that is about as scary as it gets. So nice that you got to spend a fun day with an old friend.

  4. So nice to meet with an old friend!
The bear will probably be a problem until it realizes there's no more free food. :(
I hope FarGuy can put on a few pounds. I wish I could give him some. Sadly, I have plenty to spare--lol! Sounds like he's doing better, though. :)

  5. A Bear!! so cool to capture it on the camera. I know they can really be destructive though. Glad you enjoyed your lunch and just good ol' conversation. Prayers that you all get some rain...wish I could have sent some of our 5 inches we had this week up to you all.

  6. Having the same friends for fifty years is a blessing. I have one down the street. Our children were in the same classes in grade school and high school. The two of us are the only ones left in the plat from fifty years ago.

  7. 50 years of friendship is amazing! Lunch, laughs, and a little fun at the slots – perfect! Oh my goodness, a bear visitor on the security cam! Glad you're being smart about the feeders. That wildfire smoke drifting in sounds worrying, and I hope you get some rain soon. Bacon Double Thunderburger sounds like a great treat for Far Guy, and it's good he's working on getting his weight back up. What a memorable day.

  8. So brave of the bear and I know you're right about how they remember things from our time at the lake.
I hope Far Guy can get some much needed weight on. I know from my younger days how that isn't always easy, especially with his health issures. Now, I could stand to lose. Why is it feast or famine? :-)
Thank you for all of your notes and encouragement over the past few weeks. You'll never know how much they mean to both of us. Who knew that friends you have never even met can touch your heart so?
    Blessings and love,
    Betsy

  9. The flowers on the Pin Cherries are a beautiful color.
So thankful you got to have fun times with a girlfriend. Those revive and renew our spirit.
Thankful that FG is doing better with his health and praying he can gain back some of his weight. That burger seems like it should have helped!!!
Yesterday was Lemon Butter Chicken & Veggies. 4 TBLSP butter and 4 tsp lemon juice. Obviously a 1:1 ratio. Mrs. Dash Garlic Herb Seasoning - sprinkle liberally on butter and lemon juice. Also add some chicken bouillon - I like the Herb-Ox.
Cube boneless chicken breasts, layer on top: red-skinned potatoes, carrots sliced thick or cut in spears. Cook covered at 350 degrees 45-60 minutes or until potatoes are almost done. Mix it up and put broccoli on top. Cook another fifteen minutes or so until broccoli is tender but not overdone. Pour a little of the juice over top when serving it especially on the broccoli.

  10. Wow, a bear. That's crazy. With all the animals that seem to come at night, do you stay inside at night just in case you run into something like a bear?

    1. I do not tary around outside at night. Although I do not think the bear is the attacking killing kind...I am a slow runner:)

  11. I never thought I'd think of eating six times a day as a chore, but it does sound like one now in my old age. I don't need to gain any more weight, though.

    1. Oh, a bear, I wouldn't like to meet that.
That's a nice outing with your best friend, that's really enjoyable!

  14. Seems strange to me to see a bear around someone's home but then we don't have bears in Australia.

  15. I would not want to run into that furry guy!!!
Aren't old friends the best! When you said 50 years I started counting on my fingers. Janet has been my friend since sixth grade and we had lunch on Wednesday. 57 years ago. Oh my. Now I need to catch my breath. . . .

  16. I remember picking pin cherries when I was a child. I don't, however, recall how mom pitted them. I did like the jelly she made though. :)
Sounds like you had a wonderful visit with your friend Susie.
Isn't it always the way, those of us who could stand to lose weight (pick me), can't and poor Far Guy who needs to gain weight can't.

  17. That double bacon Thunder Burger should have added a pound or two.
We have had bears here in the suburbs, but not often. Mostly we get coyotes, raccoons, and squirrels.
A 50 year friendship is a wonderful thing.

  18. An unusual question. When you get a comment in another language ( like the Dutch one today) do you copy & paste it somewhere and have it translated or what? In fact the Dutch language is just similar enough to the Low German dialect that I grew up with that I can make out her comment. sort of.

    1. I can ask to have it translated and my I Mac replaces it:)

  19. Old friends are the best! My best friend of 41 years was diagnosed with early onset dementia a year and a half ago and she hasn't seen or communicated with anyone outside of her family since. I miss her so much... we had so many plans for our retirement. I'm so glad you were able to spend time with your friend. I hope Far Guy starts feeling better soon. We used to live where bear frequented trash cans and birdfeeders, but no more and I have to say that I do not miss them one bit!

  20. How wonderful to have a 50 year old friendship! I never had a lot of friends but the few I had were good ones but they are all gone now. Is that a baby bear behind the Mother?
Has Far Guy ever tried those Boost High Protein drinks...they're good like a milk shake with protein and vitamins. When I was on the liquid diet they had me drink those so I got my protein.
