Grands At the wedding

Four of our grands were at the wedding in Western North Dakota.  Maddie was taking a Class and could not attend.  We missed Maddie, Brenton and the Great Grands.

Noah the Best Man

 Noah's wife Hanna

Paige

Savannah

Savannah was in charge of driving.  Paige and Cole rode with her.  When she picked them up she said "How far is it?  It should only take a couple of hours.  Paige and Cole informed her that they were going all the way to Western North Dakota and it was a 6 plus hour drive...Savannah replied "Oh $#@%"  She thought it was really strange that I texted all the Grands that were going to the wedding that we would be in the Mountain Time Zone.  We all had a good laugh!

Paige, Savannah and Cole  The Bartenders!

Cole and me ....he said "I want a photo with you Grandma"

And of course the Bride and Groom

Leaves

The leaves from our Burr Oaks just turn brown and fall off.   They are about 75% down.  I have mulched twice and maybe a third or fourth time will be needed.

We have a little color along the driveway.

Most likely a Northern Red Oak.

I am painting Christmas Ornaments, Far Guy wood carved.  It was a very nice day!

Minnesota weather: High 71F or 22C  Low was 42F or 6C.

Prayer Warriors:  Prayers for our Sister in law Beth as she struggles with side effects of Myasthenia Gravis.  Prayers for Brother in law Ron in Indiana who had surgery for Bladder Cancer.

Far Guy and some bras

Far Guy's Dr appointment with the Endocrinologist...the appointment went well, the two growths on his left thyroid have not changed in size in the past six months...The Dr said they are nothing to worry about only 4% of benign growths become a problem.  Come back in a year!  That was good news!

We stopped by a small place to eat called Hub 41 lakeside in Detroit Lakes.  Over the weekend they had a fundraiser (Skippin' and Sippin' Breast Cancer Walk) sponsored by the Lakes Area Parrot Heads ...we got to meet the gal in charge (Kathy) they raised $20,000 over the weekend.  They had one man that showed up as a breast cancer survivor.  Men get breast cancer too! Kathy was happy to meet Far Guy and encouraged him to show up next year the first Saturday in October.  He gave her a donation.

Far Guy said he wished he had been there when all the bras were taken off!  In December he will have one year post breast cancer chemo, surgery and radiation.  He will tell you that once you have cancer it is never over...it stays with you forever.

47 minus 10

I had 46 cousins (47 counting me) on my Dad's side of the family.  Sadly our number decreased by one on September 24th.  My cousin Diana died from hardening of the arteries in the lungs.

Diana was a marvelous quilter, she had a long arm machine and everything.  Her health began to go downhill after her husband died back in February of 2026.

She was very active with our cousins group.  She was a wonderful Grandmother and Great Grandmother!

She will be missed by her family and all of her cousins.

I was glad that I was able to attend her funeral service.

Catching up

We had ten medical appointments last week.  I like to bunch them all together if possible.  We had seven on Monday and Tuesday in Grand Forks, ND.  Far Guy saw his Palliative Care Dr, Pulmonologist and Oncologist.  A few meds were changed but nothing new is noted...he will have a PET scan in three months.   I saw a Neurologist who wants better nerve studies done that he will do himself, I had Visual Field tests at the eye Dr and she did a quick exam...I am still suspicious for glaucoma but don't have it yet, my eye pressures are great.  Then I had an MRI...I hate those things...The cysts on my pancreas are stable  the one on the uncinate process of the pancreas measures 5.2 cm x 3.8 cm  previously it was 5.3 cm x 3.5 cm  the cyst on the neck of the pancreas measured 9mm  and it measured 8mm in May.  I have not heard from the Gastroenterologist for his recommendations.  They can do nothing about them...I will have to go to Mayo at some point in time.

Thursday Far Guy had his infusion and I ran errands.  On Friday we both saw the Dermatologist...I was all clear but Far Guy had a biopsy taken from his forehead.

It was an exhausting week...next week we have three appointments...practically a vacation for me as they are all Far Guy's appointments.

We are finally unpacked here at home, I am still catching up on laundry.  I had a nap every day since we got home.

Far Guy has been fussing with Tilly and woodcarving. Hockey pre season games have begun.

I mulched leaves in the yard yesterday...they are about 50% down.

Minnesota weather:  High 61F  or 16C   Low 40F or 4C

What's cooking?   Steak burgers, french fries and green beans.

September 27 Sunday and friends

Last Sunday I woke up early and began packing for the trip to East Grand Forks, MN  My sister Julie and I warmed up lots of stuff in the fridge and made some scrambled eggs.  We had cooked breakfast for everyone the past two mornings.  Family came and went enjoying a meal with us.  Jen carried suitcases down the stairs and loaded our car for us.

We headed out...minus my sister...she caught a ride with our other baby brother to her car in our yard.

We got a little lost in Bismarck ND but enjoyed the scenery along the river.  I took the exit too soon.

Long time friend Floyd and Shirley were waiting for us at Cracker Barrel...good thing they were patient!

Here is a photo of our guys...Shirley and I are reflected in the glass!

We had a great lunch and after lunch we sat outside and visited!

So good to see old friends!

Too soon it was time for us to leave.

Very happily married!

We were so happy that we could be there to see them married.   They had a reception after the ceremony and party later with singing and dancing...we were sound asleep by that time.

September 25th Wedding Rehearsal Day

Friday September 25th started early for my sister, Julie and for daughter Jen.   The entire house was asleep as we made mints for the wedding.

Three sets of hands made short work of the mints.

My sister and I cooked up breakfast for whoever was hungry!  Egg Bake....I cooked up eggs and potatoes for a potato salad to be served at the Gluten Free Food Table after the wedding.  Grandson Noah and his wife Hanna arrived.

In the afternoon we drove out of town.

My sister Julie drove us out North and East of town...to the bride's parents and grandparents ranch.  She had been out there helping Andy and Jen with last minute details.

 Julie

Adam our youngest Grand... the groom

Adam and his Mom our daughter Jen

Adam, Andrew and Jen worked really hard getting the old barn ready for the wedding service.  The old wagon wheel was strung with lights.  The wagon wheel was made by the bride's Grandfather as he was a very talented wheelwright.

Inside the barn...rehearsal went well.

The barn from across the way in the machine shop where the reception would be held.

Andy and Jen our hosts for the grooms dinner.

The meal was wonderful...choice of rib eye steak, chicken or walleye served with mashed potatoes and asparagus.   It was all delicious...my first real beef in a month and my stomach was very happy and the best part I did not get sick!!!!

Then we were off to the Air B &B to see if Savannah, Paige and Cole had arrived!

Thursday September 24th Happenings

We are safely back at home.  We were gone for 6 days.

We began last Thursday(Sept 24th) after Far Guy's Infusion meeting up with my sister Julie after she dropped Lolli off at a Local Doggie Hotel.

We drove to Mandan North Dakota and took a break at the North Dakota's Veteran's Cemetery.

It is a beautiful spot high on a hill.

We knew just about where Far Guy's best friend Gary was buried.  We attended his funeral in Fargo and the service high on this ND hill back in 1993.  Gary died of an aneurysm, he lived a few days long enough to be a donor.  I am certain he touched many lives as a donor, as much as he touched our lives as a very good friend.  We like to stop and honor Gary's memory when we are going through Mandan.

We traveled further West after our stop.

We met up with daughter Jen and Son in law Andy at a Pub to eat supper in Dickinson ND after that we settled into an Air B&B that would hold lots of family.

We had a huge Suite with an adjoining bathroom.  We were ready for some sleep!

Hark Back! Issue #17

A old blog post from January 25, 2008

Laundry

Laundry ...everyone has it...some more than others...and we all have our ways of doing it...but my way is the only way!

I sort...white...lights...darks...jeans...light colored towels...dark colored towels...sheets...never should one load mix with any of the others...everything from the dryer gets hung up or folded immediately...it may take a while to find its way out of the laundry room but it is ready to go!

Far Guy sorts all of his laundry into appropriate bins...now he even unrolls his socks..one time I washed and dried them in the little balls in which they were presented to me...he was dismayed when he had to unroll them to put them on...from then on he unrolls his socks for me.

Years ago (back in the 1980's ) Far Guy worked days and I worked nights...we shared laundry duty...however his share included taking clothes from the dryer and physically stomping them down in the basket...leaving all my good white work blouses really wrinkled.  I was mad as a hornet...and told him to leave my &^%$#*# laundry alone...he did and continues to do so.  Do you suppose he wrinkled those blouses on purpose 30 years ago?  I was the one fooled I think...my big mouth got me a thirty plus laundry sentence with no possibility of parole or time off for good behavior:)

********************

I am still a tad CDO over the laundry.   I still sort... Far Guy helps to carry the laundry away!

Counting books

I made a book count...I had to know...how many was I hoarding?   Can you guess?  How many books are in your home on your list to read?

I try to get them out of the house as soon as I am done with them or right after the book club discussions.  I give them to my sister in law or donate them to the local little library.

So many books so little time.

I did not count books that I plan to give away!

This one is headed to Great Grandson Hey Mikey a 4th Grader!

Good memories as Adam and I read chapters in these books when he was little.  The books made us laugh!

Oh yes that book count...68.  Last time I counted it was 62...I am slipping!

Hark Back! Issue # 16

A old book post from January 27, 2008

Marbles

I collect them...and even have a special marble decorated jar for my special ones...friends give me marbles as gifts...the grandkids love them.

This past year (2007) our oldest daughter, husband and girls age 11, 9 and 8 moved in with us for ten months...needless to say our lifestyle changed in many ways.

The girls struggled with the move and a new school...missing their friends...picking on each other and hitting each other...so I implemented the marble system.

Sunday night they each got five marbles in a ziplock bag...if they lost all their marbles they lost computer, TV and phone privileges.  At the end of the week we would have a "marble meeting"...each marble was worth a dollar.

The girls were responsible for feeding their dogs and cat, putting away their laundry, helping with meals, dishes and general housekeeping...AND they could not hit each other or pick on each other.  Extraordinary behavior could be rewarded with an extra dollar at the marble meeting.

The girls did great...they lost a marble here and there...mainly just for walking up to one of their sisters and popping them one on the arm in front of Grandma.  The tears would flow when they lost a marble...but they learned...no one ever lost all their marbles...and it helped Grandma to keep most of hers!

************

The marble system worked and the house was quiet when they all moved out.

I still collect marbles.  They are small and don't take up too much room.

I still have room in the large jar!

Hark Back! Issue #15

Today is my Maternal Grandmother's birthday.  She was born September 26, 1911.

My Grandma D's fridge was always full. It held a wondrous assortment of food. Your senses were immediately assaulted by what was inside. Jars of pickles (several kinds) candied crab apples, pickled beets, rhubarb sauce, or cherry sauce. Jars with brilliant mouthwatering contents. Then there were the glass covered "refrigerator dishes" .. I always looked for the jello! Then the "hats" no one but Grandma knew what lurked under them. Do you remember the elastic edged plastic washable hats in pink, blue, green that stretched to cover leftovers? They were like shower caps..but for food. I am not sure how well they worked, but they made for a fine fridge adventure, covering delicious foods with their puffiness. "What's under here Grandma?" She always knew. I always looked for the sauerkraut.

I would set the lunch table for three, Grandpa, Grandma and me. I loved visiting them all by myself. Grandpa would take his place at his end of the red and white checked oilcloth, Grandma sat on one side of him, me on the other. Their plastic cool whip bowl filled with their pills sat in the center of the table. As I went about setting the table I would pause and give Grandpa a quick hug and a kiss on the head. He loved me unconditionally, I was perfect. I would sometimes say "You think I am perfect..right Grandpa?" He would always say 'Ya, Ya and smile." During lunch they would talk about their visitors and how fishing had been, they loved going fishing. Sometimes Grandpa would talk about the old days, then he would dab at his eyes with the red handkerchief that he kept in his pocket. I wish I could remember all of the old stories he told me. We would enjoy our lunch together, have coffee and raid the pantry for some bars, Lemon Bars were my favorite, I think they were Grandmas too because she baked them a lot.

After lunch Grandpa would get out his papers and his tobacco and roll a cigarette. After he had smoked his cigarette he would doze in his chair. I would clean up the kitchen and do the dishes and then sit a bit with Grandma talking about whatever was on her mind. Her favorite subjects were food and recipes. She would always ask "When are you coming again?" I would answer "When I can Grandma." She would reply "I know you are busy..why don't you come on Sunday?" My reply was always the same, "Cause the house is full every Sunday and I love having you and Grandpa all to myself! "

I was lucky, I was their first Grandchild, in fact they became parents to twins two months after I was born. So I have an Uncle and Aunt that are younger than me. When my Mother came home from the hospital with me, my Father was in Korea, so it was my Grandparents home that was my first home for a little while. I was pretty spoiled. Their house was full of children, all of whom took their turns with the spoiling.

I visited with my Grandparents a lot when we lived at the lake. It was only a twenty minute drive to their house. I am thankful for every time I was able to visit with them and to explore their fridge for lunch, and to feel their unconditional love wrap around me like a warm quilt on a cold day:)

Books

I finished one of my inbetween books.   It is a Sandra Dallas book called The Diary of Mattie Spenser.

A journal set in the 1860's of a newly married couple homesteading in Colorado.  It was a book I really enjoyed.   I give it a 9.5 out of a 10.  But then I like all Sandra Dallas books.

Onto the next book!

Baby K started walking!!  She is just shy of 16 months old...from the video that Maddie sent she is trying really hard.

Here are photos I shamelessly stole from facebook!

Look at these beautiful/handsome Great Grands of ours!

Apples

The apples are really yummy.  I made another Gluten Free Apple Crisp using a mixture of Granny Smiths and Honeycrisp.

Yesterday was a Gluten Free experiment... making GF  Enchiladas.   Bake a chicken breast then shred it and add a can of GF Cream of Chicken Soup and a small container of sour cream.  Put some mixture in the bottom of a baking dish then fill some GF Corn Tortilla Shells partially full and line the pan with them top with remaining mixture and then top with GF Cheese (Not all cheese is GF) Bake at 350 about an hour.  It was really good.  Comfort food!

I am eating Gluten Free for the moment...until after Adam's Wedding because I do not want to be sick for that.  My stomach is still not well.

I am pretty sure that the compartments in my stomach are folded over and allow foods to mingle.  I do not like foods mingling...they should stay inside their compartments...so I think I have compartment failure.

I am sticking to the horrid BRAT diet mostly especially for breakfast and lunch.  Slowly I am adding something different for supper....hence the Chicken Enchiladas!  So far I am tolerating it ok.

Far Guy and I have seven Doctor appointments next week between the two of us.  Far Guy is not thrilled.

Oh yes proof I baked!

Monday project

 The old wedding gown/baptismal gown.

It has survived 4 of our Great Grandchildren's baptisms.

Now it is needed for a wedding...seems they want to display all the grandma's and mother's wedding gowns.  When they heard that mine had been made into a baptismal gown they decided they wanted it anyway.

Monday morning I got it out and steamed it the best I could...that 56 year old satin fabric is not the easiest to work with.

It will hang in the dining area off the old phone for a day or so before I gently fold it back in its box. I am certain it will still be a tad wrinkled by the time it is displayed.   Hopefully I will get some photos of the other gowns!

I had a great day!

Thanks for all the birthday wishes!  I appreciate every one of them!

Far Guy and I worked in the garage for a little while then we decided to go to an out of the way place for lunch.  On the way to lunch we could go by a cemetery where I could place some Fall flowers and take a photo of one of my cousins headstones.   Then we went to lunch...Far Guy had a Prime Rib Sandwich...I had some french fries and a soda.  Then we went to an Apple Orchard where I bought a bag of Honey Crisp apples!   We had a lovely drive in the country.

The place we stopped for lunch ...years ago it was a general store and shirttail relatives owned it...the tin ceiling and the old wood floors remain.  I recall visiting there many times.

Some of the trees are starting to turn colors.

I made apple crisp and in the evening my other baby brother and she who sees robins first came over to taste it with us!

Happy Birthday to me!

Yes I am one of those September people!

Feeling a bit guilty today.  My Dad always joked with me that when he was going to be 100 that I would be 75.  Well I guess I made it to 75 but Dad died when he was 96.   He would have given me a really bad time!  ( I always told him I was NOT doing 75...yet here I am)

Some flowers for my birthday!

My other baby brother and she who sees robins first took us out for lunch yesterday to our favorite Mexican Place...the food was great!  Not sure what we will do today what ever it is Far Guy and I will have a good day together!

Book Club 2026: September

We read Looking For Jane by Heather Marshall.

I give it an 8 out of 10.  It is not a book I would have picked to read.  That is the beauty of belonging to a group...you are challenged to read different books.  It is all about women and their struggles in homes for unwed mothers, obtaining illegal abortions, and motherhood.

It was sometimes a very sad/mad read...it was presented by a good Author however her last plot twist seemed a bit like it was pulled out of the hat to suit her story line.

What's cooking?  Chicken cordon blu, sweet potatoes and yellow beans.

Minnesota weather: Cool and a few sprinkles of rain.   High was 63F or 17C   Low was 54F or 12C.
