Let’s Play Hockey!!

The grand girls are Hockey players.

Paige

First we attended Paige’s game..they won. Paige says that the Justin Bieber sticker on the back of her helmet brings her good luck. As soon as her game was over we headed to another arena.  It was a busy weekend in Bemidji.

Maddie

Maddie is on the left..Hockey photos are always a challenge because of the plexiglass.

Where oh where is Savannah??

Savannah in the penalty box

She was in the penalty box..later she said “Grandma I didn’t do anything..it must have been someone else and I got blamed.”

Ya sure..she is one aggressive hockey player..she skates her heart out and takes ownership of the puck.

Vannah and the puck

Savannah is on the left.  Savannah and Maddie both play on the Junior Varsity team.

Girls Hockey is fun to watch.  Watching these girls skate over the past five years has been a blast:)We Love our hockey players

The Penalty Box

Yesterday I wrote about “The Echo Ring”  where supposedly you can stand in the center and whisper and it can be heard all around the ring..should you have people standing there to hear your whisper.   WELL..as it turns out the photo I showed you is a old stone bandstand.  The real echo ring which I assumed was a campfire ring because it had the remnants of a campfire in the center..is up the stone steps and on the south edge of the park.  Of course it is all covered with snow right now, but when spring comes I will go and take a photo of the real echo ring.  So all of you that said it looked like a bandstand were entirely correct and I was entirely wrong.  This is proof positive that I am not perfect, and that things are not always as they seem.  Perhaps I should spend some time in the penalty box.

Last evening even though it was –18 F or –28 C  we attended a Girls 12 and Under Hockey Game in Detroit Lakes.  Maddie and Paige were both playing.  Maddie had some skate issues..blisters and calluses..my feet hurt for her.  Paige was being Paige and wore two different socks…

IMG_1022  she must have lost a sock someplace..but it was easier to keep track of her on the ice.

IMG_1039 Here is Miss Paige in the penalty box..she didn’t feel that she was hooking..but the ref said she did..so she spent her time in the penalty box.  These little girls had two hockey games yesterday..in this Grandma’s opinion one Hockey game a day is plenty.  They lost again..3 to 1..I wish they would win just one game this season.

Hockey..and the penalty box..the sport where if you break the rules..your teammates must carry on without you.  The sport where you go in from the cold to sit in the cold:)

Lets Play Hockey

On valentines day, we attended a hockey game.  Our granddaughters Savannah and Madison were playing.  They both play on the same team this year, Girls 12 and under, yes Savannah is 13..but she didn't make the cut off date.  Paige plays also, but didn't have a game on Sunday.
 Madison
All three of the girls love hockey.  It is what they do in the winter, between practices, games and tournaments..it is an all consuming sport. In the summer they attend skills clinics and hockey camps. This is their third year of playing girls hockey, when they lived in Nebraska there wasn't a girls hockey program.
 Savannah
The first girls hockey game was played in Barrie, Ontario in 1892.  However it took more than a hundred years for Women's Hockey to finally appear at the Olympics in 1998 in Nagano, Japan.
I talked with the girls, I asked them  if they thought they could ever play in the Olympic Games..they thought so..but Madison and Paige want to play on different teams when they go to college..so they can "cream" each other.  There are two sisters on the Olympic Team this year..the Lamoureux sisters from Grand Forks, ND.  In fact there are five women on the Olympic team that are from Minnesota or North Dakota.
Savannah is a bit of a scrapper.  She would like to be able to do full body checks, sometimes she pushes the limit and incurs a penalty.   Physical checks are a way to take out, slow down or interrupt the other teams possession of the puck.  Checking is not allowed in Girls Hockey.
Madison is in the back of this photo..getting ready to bite the dust..ice.
I am not sure what positions the girls play. I think they are Wings..maybe.  When they are playing they fall down, I hold my breath until they scramble to their feet. I probably spend way too much time trying to photograph them.  Do you know how hard it is to photograph moving objects?  I love that they both were wearing black helmets..it was much easier to keep track of them.

They won their game, but even if they hadn't they would have lined up to bump fists with the refs, the coaches and the opposing team..one thing that they have learned by playing a team sport is teamwork and sportsmanship.  Oh ya, and you should always have an extra hair band!

Hockey= Invented by boys, perfected by girls:)
