54

Happy 54th Wedding Anniversary to us!  We plan to go out for steaks at Harry's if we can still get a reservation.  If not we will find some other place to celebrate.

Who woulda thunk it all those years ago that at 18 and 19 years old we would make it 54 years!

Happy 50th Wedding Anniversary!

Well today is the day...fifty years ago at 2 o'clock in the afternoon we were married in Park Rapids Minnesota at St Johns Lutheran Church by the Pastor that made Far Guy promise to go to church every Sunday for the rest of his life during Confirmation.

The flowers have faded.

We have a quiet day planned today with a bit of cooking.  Family will be coming later today and tomorrow.
Thank you for following along and for all your kind comments.

Wistful Wednesday: 48 years ago

It was cold…about –20F or –6C eh!

We were married in the afternoon and had a reception afterwards.  We had cake, Christmas cookies, coffee, punch and some fancy sandwitches…they used to take a loaf of bread and swirl food coloring in it.  Then it would be sliced lengthwise and the layers would be filled with cheese…ham salad etc…fancy….the reception took place in the church social hall.

This is a photo of the inside of the church taken from the balcony.

We had fun looking at the backs of the heads in this photo.  Many who are now gone. My Maternal Grandmother and Far Guys Maternal Grandmother both wore hats as did our Mothers.

This is the entire wedding party. The gal( my Aunt that was younger than me) on the far left died last spring but the rest of the group are still alive and well.

48 years…it sounds like a long time…but it doesn’t seem that long ago.  We know each other well and can finish each other sentences and often are thinking the same thing at the same time. We are still best friends and on good days we both have a wicked sense of humor.

We had planned to spend the day away to see a Grand…but we are supposed to get a bunch of snow and it may be a winter storm so we will spend the day at home. Warm and safe instead of in a snowstorm someplace.

Shiny Brite Tree and a Anniversary

Finally the Shiny Brite tree is up.  For those of you who follow my blog and the Shiny Brite journey, you will remember that I had a really tall tree…like 9 1/2 to 10 feet tall.  It was just TOO much.  We barely got it in the air last year.  So I sold it.  Yup not the ornaments just the tree.
This is what it looked like last year.
The whole tree

I purchased a 7 1/2 foot tree after Christmas last year knowing that a shorter tree would be better.  This one I can set up all by myself.  Next year I must put the tree top ornament and a few ornaments on the very top before I put it all together.
Chance at the Shiny Brite tree
In previous years Chance would come up the stairs all by himself to check on me and look out the door or cuddle up on one of the beds and nap.
This year he had to be coaxed upstairs, the cold weather that settled in really kicked up his arthritis.  Mine too …such is life when you are older.

He really didn’t want his photograph taken.
The tree is done Dec 19
This year the tree is in front of the french doors.  I have decorated it all around, front and back and sides.  Not sure how many ornaments are on the tree…enough.

Lots of memories on the tree, many ornaments are named. Some are still with us and some have passed on.   Grace, Rae, Lillian and Susans, JoLynn, Edie, Sandy, Chance, Gene, Madeline, Minnie, Tom and Lindas, Leann and last but not least Jennifer.  I think of all these people that were so kind to gift me with Shiny Brites over the years.  My Sandy’s were purchased at her estate sale and my Minnie was a gift from Edie. All special.

Today is our anniversary!  We have now been married 46 years, through thick and thin want and plenty, better and worse, richer and poorer, happy times and sad times we muddled through together.   We will celebrate when Far Guy feels better.

Wistful Wednesday: October 7 1950

Sixty-five years ago my parents were married.  Mom was 20 years old she was just shy of 21, Dad was 23 and a few days shy of 24.  They celebrate everything in October, their wedding anniversary and both of their birthdays.  They met in May of 1950…as I recall my Mother telling it…they were both someplace Toad Lake maybe and Dad offered to buy her a hamburger and she said no.

They were married in the evening and a wedding supper was held at my Grandparents home.

My cousin Chuckie was ten years old …he not only got to stay up late but he got to honk the horn all the way from the Toad Lake Church to our Grandparents farm (about six miles).  He told me the other day “I remember that day so well!”

My parents went on a honeymoon to Duluth Minnesota a few days after their wedding.madeline 1950 scenic photo

I am not sure where these photos were taken someplace in the Duluth area.  Of course this was before selfies…so they had to take turns with the camera.

Happy Anniversary Mom and Dad!

Best Friends

We may be a tad cranky with each other as we age…but we will always be best friends, a shoulder to lean or cry upon and someone to throw you kisses across the room if you are kinda cranky.   Someone who can almost read your mind and gets better at it as the years pass you by.

How many years has it been?  Forty four..seems like only yesterday or maybe the day before and here we are two daughters and five grands later.

December 20, 1969: Anniversary

"If you're alone, I'll be your shadow. If you want to cry, I'll be your shoulder. If you want a hug, I'll be your pillow. If you need to be happy, I'll be your smile. But anytime you need a friend, I'll just be me" ~ Author Unknown

Forty years ago I was a young bride..and Far Guy was a young groom..there are more wedding photos here.
Today I will share this one..it is one that I did not share last year.

I will always regret getting married at Christmas time.  We have never celebrated our anniversary.  It is too close to Christmas to go anywhere.  Christmas was always more important..this year we have made a pact to go someplace further than Thief River Falls, Minnesota.. a kind of second Honeymoon! We aren't sure where yet or exactly when..but we are applying for our passports.

Our neighbor Jo came over and took a few photographs.. one for our Christmas letter..but they serve for remembering our Fortieth Anniversary too! We always have some kind of Christmas photo that we can say serves as an anniversary photo. It is the only thing positive that I can say about getting married at Christmas time..you are likely to have a few photos!

Far Guy deserves some kind of reward for putting up with me for forty years..one of his favorite sayings over the years is " Calm down sweetheart! " I am pretty happy that he sat in my desk one day in study hall..and I am pretty happy that he eventually asked me out forty two years ago:)
