Wistful Wednesday: 1st Day of School 1967

This is a photo that my mother took on the first day of school.

I was a Junior that year, my other baby brother would have been almost 7 years old and in 1st Grade and my baby brother would have been in 8th grade that year.

Looks like we have all the school supplies we need. This was way before book bags or backpacks.  My mother must have thought my other baby brother was going to grow some and those pants could be rolled down as needed.

I think that plant was called Gold Drops.  It was an old plant that almost everyone had in their flower gardens.

The Unbelievable Uglies

We ran across an old pin.

Uglies Pin

The first real date that I had with Far Guy was Thanksgiving weekend 1967.  We went to the Detroit Lakes Armory to a dance that would be the first of several Uglies dances we would attend.   Rock and Roll at it’s finest.  Winston Fink with his rubber chicken was a real showman. One of the best parts of the dance was watching the band. They caused a rock and roll riot in Fargo North Dakota that same year and were banned from playing their music in town for a while. (quite shocking for Fargo)

Back at the dance in DL as it is known by the locals, Far Guy had a former girl friend in town his cousins Rod and Tom would dance by and say “Nickel for your thoughts..and got a nickel?”  His former girlfriends name was Penny.  He had more old girlfriends than any other guy I dated.

The Uglies made a few records, they didn’t get famous.  I always thought they would be discovered.  Winston Fink (Dave) died on New Years Day in 2008.  So when the band does a reunion tour it would never be quite the same.

A long time ago Far Guy met one of the replacement drummers when he joined the Happy Hooligans. His name might be Gary Breyer…Far Guy cannot quite remember.

Fast forward to a couple of years ago. The Uglies made a video that showed a house that Far Guy recognized.  He was on the Fire Department back then and the house burned down.  The people who lived there were more concerned about the welfare of the fireman than their home. It turned out to be one of the Unbelievable Uglies homes.

I am a music snob.  I don’t listen to music unless it is old Rock and Roll preferably from the 1960’s.

These cold winter nights bring on old memories of good music with a great dateSmile

Wistful Wednesday: 1967

Fall is in the air, it was Homecoming last Friday Night.

Homecoming was a big deal in the late 1960’s.   Everyone and their uncle came back to town for the big football game and the dance.

The Homecoming Royalty was picked by popular vote weeks before.  Everyone just voted for who they wanted..very democratic. The Sophomores and Juniors chose one beautiful girl to represent their class.  The three Senior Gals with the highest amount of votes all went shopping for a great dress.

There was a flurry of activity making millions of tissue paper flowers for the class float and the excitement of the bonfire that was held in the school parking lot the night before the big game.  On Friday morning..the entire school would vote for the Homecoming Queen. The results were kept secret until the coronation in the afternoon.

In 1967 the choices were:

One of the most popular girls who was in the right “click”.

The foreign exchange student.

One of the sweetest gals you could ever hope to meet, who was quiet and shy.

Far Guy was in the Ushers Club, homecoming was a big deal for the Ushers Club..they would be the escorts for the Queen and her royal court.

Homecoming Sheila and Gene Fixed

The dress was navy blue velvet, the sweetest gal in the senior class won, and she was escorted by Far Guy.

He often tells the “grand's” that this was the time he was the king, because he escorted the queen.

From the left: Dennis, Hilda ( my cousin) Junior class attendant, Mark, Mayu, Sheila, Gene, Janie, Floyd, Doreen Sophomore class attendant and Larry.

Oh boy PETA would have a hey day now a days.  I believe the fur coats/stoles were borrowed from a few ladies in the community.  Back then many people wore fur coats.  It was cold out there on the football field that night.

I was in-between boyfriends..so I went to the dance with a bunch of my girl friends.  Far Guy had a date..I am not sure which of his many girlfriends was his date that night.

The Junior class float won the prize for the best float in the parade..making a million flowers out of Kleenex must have looked impressive to someone.  I was a Junior that year, and Far Guy was a Senior:)

Wistful Wednesday : Homecoming

Homecoming was a big deal back when I was in high school, we had contests, we decorated main street store windows, and designed and built floats out of hay wagons. The night before homecoming we had a huge bonfire. The day of homecoming was the coronation of the homecoming queen. After the coronation was the parade, then the homecoming football game and finally the dance.
Far Guy was in the Ushers Club, and it so happened that he escorted the gal that became the homecoming queen in 1967. She was and still is beautiful inside and out. She was a perfect Homecoming Queen. Far Guy insists that this is the year that he was Homecoming King..after all he escorted the Queen. Who am I to argue with royalty:)
