Red Headed Woodpecker

For some reason we don’t see the Red Headed Woodpecker…who remembers Woody the Woodpecker he had a red head too?

We have Pileated Woodpeckers, Red Bellied Woodpeckers, Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers and assorted Sapsuckers and the beautiful Common Flicker.

We are in the breeding range of the Red Headed Woodpecker but not the wintering over area.

Anyways…my Dad made me one for Christmas.  He was busy in his garage/shop…cutting sanding and painting.

Gift from my Dad

Far Guy put it up on one of the poles of the wood/tractor shed this week.  As you can see we still have plenty of snow.

We don't see many red-headed woodpeckers here either. I remember once nearly 40 years ago. We stopped at a park in Wisconsin. Seemed like there was a red-header woodpecker in nearly every tree. Glad we saw it.

Such a nice woodpecker from your dad. FG must be feeling even better if he got out and put this up for you. It's really neat. :-)

I love this little guy. If you wanted to you could make and sell them. I would buy one. So glad your dad made it for you.

I haven't seen a red-headed woodpecker in over 50 years. They used to be very common in this area.

I may have seen one in the last 20 years, when we lived in Texas.
But in Arkansans the others were all around.
Good to get out, see what others are doing.

That is so cute and makes a person smile to see it out in all that snow - - quite striking!

I remember Woody!
We get a few downy and hairy woodpeckers here as well as flickers. I did see a very few pileated woodpeckers here, don't think we get red headed this far west/north

It is a wonderful thing. I remember when my dad would make things like that and it was so satisfying when he made them. I have two of his windmills that he made and will probably bring the last one down to the new place. We did see a redheaded woodpecker in our yard once in 40 years.

We are far out of the red head's range. they are very attractive birds.

I like it! I always thought the red headed woodpecker was just a common name for the pileated woodpecker. I see that I was mistaken.

I love it! What a wonderful gift from your Dad! We have started seeing woodpeckers in just the last year or two and among them I do see the red headed woodpecker. I love seeing them but boy can they hammer away. I have only seen the pileated woodpecker a couple of times and I was amazed by his size. We live in Missouri so maybe they are just coming to this area.

Old Dog saw what I think was a pileated woodpecker while I was in South Carolina. It was the one bright spot in a week of rain.

I remember red-headed woodpeckers when a kid just north of St Paul. I think that was kind of their northern limit. I haven't seen one since.
