Wistful Wednesday: Mom in 1952

This is an old photo of my Mother taken in 1952.  See those diapers on the line?  Some of those were mine.  Some of them belonged to my aunt and uncle who were two months younger than me.  Three babies were spoiled that winter of 1951-1952.

By spring Mom lost all her baby fat and used a safety pin to keep her jeans skinny at the waist.

I love the smell of clothing that has been dried on the line outside.  Sadly I don’t have a clothes line here, oh I suppose I could stretch a bit of clothesline between a couple of trees…but then I would have to iron.

Wistful Wednesday: 1952

I have just a few photos of me with my paternal grandparents.

Granparents Y (2)

Grandpa Y, me and Grandma Y

Grandma Y and me 1952

Grandma Y and me.

I was a bit of a chunk..or is that just the look of a healthy baby?  I wonder what the occasion was?  It was the summer of 1952..I would be one year old in the Fall.  I am pretty sure this photo was taken at my Grandparents farm..there was a bunch of bushes most likely some Lilacs half way up the hill to the house that was a stopping off place for a photograph.  I think someone else took the photo..it is a different size photograph than the ones my Mother took with her little Brownie Camera.

Grandma’s favorite flower was a Hollyhock..either that or it became her favorite after it grew effortlessly near her house:)

Wistful Wednesday: Christmas 1952

I found this old Christmas Greeting.

Scan0061 (2)

Far Guy and his big sister in 1952.  He would have been in his terrible twos..in a few months he would have been three.  His sister would have been seven.  The photo was taken at their home in Park Rapids Minnesota.

Apparently several photos were taken.  The best would be chose along with a greeting and the negative taken into a shop that developed film.  In a few weeks your cards would come..with envelopes all set to send out for Christmas.

The old velvet couch had very ornate pieces of wood on each end.  I suspect that the couch was navy blue or burgundy…burgundy most likely..that was their fathers favorite color.

These black and white photo greeting cards became popular after WWII and continued on into the 1950’s and early 1960’s.  In the mid 1960’s the Christmas photo greetings appeared in color:)

Wistful Wednesday: 1952

Pin curls..do up you hair for a Saturday night.

Mom Connie and Aunt Marion 1952

That is my Mom with her hair in pin curls with a scarf wrapped around her head. The other lady is my Aunt Marion.  Pants with rolled up cuffs must have been in fashion that year.

This photo was taken at my Grandparents D’s home..that is their garage in the background..and the cloths line where the wash was was hung..and most likely many diapers..there were three new babies in the house that winter..me and my twin Aunt and Uncle who were born two months after me:)

Wistful Wednesday: Birthday!

Yes-sir-ee someone is getting older today.  Someone who missed being a valentine gift by only a few hours.

Someone who is older than me..someone who might be old enough to get a Social Security check sometime soon.

Gene 2years (2)

Someone with beautiful eyes and eyelashes that all the girls envy.  Someone with a wonderful smile.  Someone who was cuter than a bugs ear in his bow tie and suspender pants back in 1952.  Look at that hair..so blond without even a hint of the curls to come..or the baldness either.

Someone who said last night “how did we get so old..so fast?”:)

Wistful Wednesday: 1952

This photo was taken shortly after my Dad returned from Korea.  My Mom has pin-curls in her hair..and I am looking pretty cute.. being the oldest..I was an only child back then.  This photo was taken in my maternal grandparents yard..that is one of those infamous woodsheds behind us. Notice all the clothes lines.

My parents purchased a Farmstead with 160 acres shortly after this, it was the farm that I grew up on.  It is just two miles cross country from where we live now:)

Wistful Wednesday: 1952

This is Far Guy and Tiny, a Chihuahua. This photo was taken in 1952. Far Guys Dad loved dogs, I am not supposed to tell you that he used to put a cigarette in Tiny's mouth and then had him sit up.
One time the entire family including Tiny were headed for Grand Forks, ND to visit relatives. They stopped at the farm to pick up something and while they were all in the house.. Tiny ate all of their freshly made turkey salad sandwiches...Far Guy says .."I was really disappointed, my Mom made some really great turkey salad sandwiches with celery in them and everything. Years later, my Dad would tell the story and laugh, but it wasn't very funny at the time."

Can you imagine this tiny little dog eating four turkey salad sandwitches..they were probably made with homemade bread too. Years ago that what the ladies used to do for long trips, they made sandwiches and cookies and put coffee in a thermos, and milk in a glass jar. There were very few fast food places, there were resturaunts..but they were expensive, so a good wife and mother would pack a lunch to be eaten along the way.

The fabric in these curtains and on this chair were pretty wild..but probably very fashionable for 1952:)

Wistful Wednesday : 1952

Me in 1952!
The Babee Tenda, a tip proof high chair play table on wheels. My Mother used it to corral me, I could play safely off of the drafty floor inside or outside out of the dirt and grass. It was an ingenious invention. I used it lots of times on my baby brother Jody, the straps that were used to buckle him in were all worn out..so I used a dish towel and tied him in..poor kid..trapped by his older sister! :)
