Chance: Playing Ball

All the balls I lost in snow banks have been found.  I thought one of my favorite blue balls was lost forever after Far Side threw it wildly in the dark one night and it landed in a snow bank. I searched and she searched…yesterday Far Guy found it…he is my hero.

IF you are a Border Collie waiting is part of the ball game.

Laying in wait

Then you have to anticipate where the ball will land…hopefully it lands in your mouth and doesn’t bounce off your nose. One time Far Side threw the ball with the flinger and it hit a tree and came back and hit her in the forehead…boy was she surprised.  I think she said “Oh BAD WORD.”

Anticipation

Someone said I should go on a diet.

Diet who me

Diet smiet…I am 10 1/2 years old.  I am too old to diet.   I had a tough week, I am a little stiff and sore, Far Side says I have some arthritis.  We have been playing ball…BUT when Far Side says to quit I do. She gave Far Guy and me a lecture, “If any kids come to play ball that dog (ME) has to stop every once in awhile OR go on a leash.”

me and my ball

Sometimes I wait around with the ball in my mouth until she figures I have rested enough.  Too much spring is Far Sides diagnosis...Spring Fever.  She says “Chance calm down tomorrow is another day to play ball.”

Chance - Now that it's spring, you will have an opportunity for more exercise to "tone" your muscles and make you look sleeker. Also, it is almost time for your annual spring grooming in a few weeks and that will thin you up fast, too. Spring has sprung early here, too - - - but like you, we generally don't get any more snow until late in this year or even the first months of next year.

Chance, I am so happy you found all your lost balls and that you are able to play outside again. At our age I think a diet is stupid. Enjoy life to it's fullest. Besides you will naturally lose weight when you play outside more again. Have a great weekend.

I second what Lynda says. You aren't a spring puppy any more, but you sure look good to me. I enjoy looking at you as you are a very elegant critter with perfect markings. :-)

Hi Chance:
I too think that you just have an excess of fur right now and will look slimmer after that is trimmed one of these days. I am sorry to learn that you have a little arthritis. Well, don't we all? I hope that you will not play too much ball and make it hurt more. Try to be a little less athletic?

My little dog likes to chase after a ball, Chance, but she doesn't want to bring it back!

Arthritis will definitely slow a body, and it's painful. Those rest periods that FarSide recommends will help, so listen to her. Sure glad you found your favorite ball(s) in he yard.

Ah Chance - you're lovely. My Oscar loved to run around with his ball in his mouth too. He had arthritis and the vet told him to lose weight too - and that was a good idea, because then his joints didn't hurt as much. Losing a bit of weight will extend your life and mean you play for longer! ;-) Hope you're on pills for that arthritis - they really do help!

I have not been good at brushing Barney for a while. So he is smaller now because I brushed a lot of him away. He too doesn't need to exercise too much or he gets down so he can't do the stairs very well. Barney has his morning milk bones reduced by two now. It won't make much difference but running the fences outside will help. Take care Chance and enjoy this weather.

Hiya Chance! Glad you're finding balls that were lost in the snow. I've been picking up trash that was tossed in the snow . . . or blown and then hidden for who knows how long. OH BAD WORD is priceless!

Sam I Am...... said...

Let's face it, Chance, we're not getting any younger. I know Mom throws the frisbee for me but it's not like in the old days when I would go after it again and again. I bring it back to her and drop it at her feet because she won't "retrieve". LOL! I even get tuckered out now on her 3-5 mile hikes...I hate the fact that I am not the dog I once was but then she's not the mistress she once was either! LOL! We're all shedding here like crazy and Sam doesn't even bother putting the vacuum cleaner away until it's over. I've put on a few pounds too and I'm now over 100 pounds but Sam keeps me eating healthy foods and no table scraps so it must be just getting older. I know she hates the carpeting but it sure feels good on these old bones and also my bed which is never quite big enough for me but it feels good on the hips.
Annie does well and we're about the same age. She gets tired on the hikes but Mom takes breaks until she catches her breath and then we're good to go again. Annie is amazing with those short little legs. You's be surpsied at how fast she can run! With Annie we have to watch her spine as dachsunds usually have back problems but so far so good. The cat, Grace, is young...about 2 so she has no problems and keeps us jumping! It sounds like you're doing better than we are.....good for you!

I'll play ball with you anytime your want Chance! Happy you found your balls to play with again. It does look like you are having a great time, and you are so patient when you wait for the ball. Keeping active will help you arthritis so keep running after then. We had a Cocker spaniel who was obsessed about playing ball. Sometimes we would tease him and put the ball on the mantel and he would wait for hours for it to fall? He'd drive us nuts with the ball, but he love it so. I sure miss her!

How exciting to find all your snow balls. You do look a bit, um, fluffy, but I'm guessing that will come off with some fun spring walks :-).
